Why would it be a good thing on Mac and not on Windows?
I use my MBP for work and it would be a huge pain in the ****** if Outlook went away.
See other replies below yours - MS never really put as much effort into the Mac client as they did for the native Windows one (killing it off like this is blatant proof)

I use Outlook for my work mail. (And Mail.app for all other accounts.)

Has been a nice setup, and a fine way to keep personal and work stuff separated.

Now, if they swap the (reasonable) well performing MS Outlook.app with an Electron based one - like the train wreck that is MS Teams.app - I would have to find a new setup... :(

It would be nice if they'd make up their mind for once and not completely change Outlook every 2-3 years.

Oh no, not just Outlook itself. But its OS framework, API and strategy. I mean they sort of swing from one set of framework to another and now to the Web? And I assume this is based on something like Electron ?

After All these years, I am still not convinced Cross Platform App would work with a high quality of standard requirement.

But then a lot of people seems to be happy with VSCode being good enough.

The web app is actually closer to feature parity with the Windows version than the current Mac app.

Yes, it won't be as performant.

Come on guys, it's not all bad news. If they're dumping the native Windows app that finally means the end of them using an HTML renderer in Outlook that makes IE6's rendering engine look cutting-edge and state of the art.

It's a PowerPC solution, but I've had a lot of success with TenFourFoxBoxes for the web-based emails. It even saves it as an "app" that can be called on whenever. https://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/box/

If someone with more coding knowledge than myself (meaning anyone with any knowledge LOL) can get the code and compile for MacTels and ASMacs, then we're in business.

Why is it so hard to make Outlook on Mac function like Outlook on Windows? No one wants this watered down web experience.
Since this would be universal, it would make Outlook on Mac function exactly like Outlook on Windows.

This is something I never understood about Microsoft & Mac versions of Office. Why aren't they the same? Lots of cross platform apps manage it just fine.

The differences always pissed me off.
i hear ya! i can photoshop anything blindfolded (well, without thinking about commands) on my MacBook air, but can't cut and paste art without re-imaging the canvas size to 1x1 pixel on a PC.

Is that the deal with Teams? I don't know much about "Electron-based," but I've sure wondered why Teams is so clunky, cumbersome, and, frankly, ugly compared to the other Office apps (say what you will about them).

Web app though does not have as much functionality as Windows client. So Windows user may end up with less functionality unless web app dev has moved on by 2022 to accommodate those features as well.

Any chance it will become free on Mac then? Right now you need 365 or an office package for Mac don’t you, or you use the web version.

Yep, teams in the browser is almost the same as the Teams desktop client as it just uses ElectronJS wrapper for desktop use.

At the end of the day its a cost cutting exercise for MS. Why have a team of Windows developers, a team of Android devs, Mac devs, iOS/iPad devs when a one size fits all approach can be cheaper.

Electron is just a bad solution for such apps. Teams is a typical example. It performs really bad and should never be used for demanding apps like Outlook. Microsoft just doesn't really care about user experience, as long as the cloud fees are to be paid and the stronger team inside Microsoft wins, not because of technical merits, but because of politics.
Microsoft will never be the company many would like to see. Outlook is dead to me and I will not consider it again in the next 5 years.

It is also impossible to understand how Microsoft started redesigning Outlook for Mac and before this redesign is even complete (and with many promised features still not available), they announce that they are abandoning it too..

Glad I don't use Outlook. This would annoy me greatly if I did.
i tried deleting my outlook account in November which (i think Microsoft) responded that my account was good for another year in December. I like that mail and interface but only have 1 contact.

This is why I'm so glad that Apple's Office Suite offers plenty enough for me to mix with other MS Office-based computers in my company. It's plainly obvious that Microsoft wants to continue to screw Mac users with a dumbed down version of Office and still force them to pay the same full price as the Windows version which has always been full featured. Maybe Microsoft forgot that Office began on Mac first and when they saw the success they decided to make it for Windows.
