Nothing to be proud of.

And the number of downgrades from Vista to XP? Quite high, indeed.

Almost all corporate sales for Vista are actually XP installs.

How many people switched to Mac or a Linux flavor as a result of Vista? More than MS would care to know.

Also, the survey doesn't mention that every Intel Mac running Windows as a second OS, while counting as a plus for Vista and/or XP, is also a hardware sale for Apple.

Apple has experienced greater hardware growth since it began using Intel processors than at any time in the recent past. As the number four computer hardware vendor in the US, they are in a position to increase their market share beyond anything they've seen since the inception of the Windows 3.0 in 1990. Looks like it's time to roll out those Vista ads, MS.

Where did those numbers come from, out of curiosity?

I can't recall who posted the comment about Starbucks, and the guy/gal running the DELL save a boatload of $$$ vs. the Mac guy/gal, but look again. I did a comparison of a decent MB vs. a similar DELL Inspiron, and there was little if any savings by buying a DELL. Sure, you can save a ton going to Wal-Mart and buying their low end DELL Laptop, but its not the same at all. And it has Vista Home [stripped of everything].

It's not Apple's fault that some consumers are dumb, and buy garbage...

Seeing as people here were so happy about the OS X market share getting to 7%, and Leopard usership going up by 1/3, in the same time, Vista's market share increased by 355%.

That's not a comparison at all, those are two different things. The OSX number is total use of macs (which IS increasing). The vista "market share" increase is virtually all at the expense of other flavors of windows. A couple years ago, zero people were running Vista - of course it has increased from that. The relevant numbers are that vista has been accepted at a slower rate than it's predecessor and that overall windows market share has been slowly but steadily declining.

Read the article you linked, windows market share dropped three percentage points. That IS a failure on MS's part.

Ugh, if there's one thing I hate about Apple, it's those obnoxious "Get a Mac" ads. Apple deserves every bit of criticism it gets from those.

whoever voted 'negative' is an ignorant fool.

competition is what makes better products for us consumers, unless you want this:

Well mac Fanboy or not,

Vista is a Bloated Mess.

Its 1/2 new stuff and 1/2 old code. Many of the best features are buried in menus that really don't make sence.

But the worst thing is that there is very little reason to move to Vista. It does not perform any better, DX10 is a sham because I can make Crysis the only worthwhile DX10 game look better in DX9.

Vista needs to be better....

Ah, spoken like someone who hasn't used Vista.

Many of the best features are buried in menus that don't make "sence"? Let's see, one of the best features is Vista Media Center. That just blows away Front Row in every possible way it can. UI, features, etc.

Another one of Vista's better features is the system wide video acceleration. DVDs, blu-ray, H.264, etc. all look and play better on Vista than OS X thanks to modern dedicated GPUs (and now 2 IGPs from nVidia and ATI) supporting full bitstream decoding, deblocking, de-interlacing, color correction, etc. Keeping in mind that nearly all PC notebooks and desktops in the $800+ range ship with dedicated graphics, and AMD's "Puma" with the Radeon 3200 IGP will bring these features to the sub-$800 market.

Vista has other features that are not buried in any menus. In fact, I can't think of any of the new features that are "buried in menus". One great thing about Vista is its memory useage. Something the anti-MS fans mistake as "bloat", Vista caches data for the software you use the most. So if I click the Firefox icon it loads instantly on a fresh boot. See how long FF takes to open on OS X after a fresh boot.

Thanks to driver updates and SP1, my games and everything that relies on heavy CPU use now runs faster in Vista than they ever did in XP.

Vista is a good OS whether the Apple fans want to admit it or not. I like my MacBook (would love if it if had the hardware a $1406 after taxes computer should have), but Vista has many more features that Leopard should have as standard, and Vista is rock solid.

It also amazes me how people say "haha Vista is failing!" When its already sold what? 5x more copies than there are Mac users total?

Looking forward to Microsoft's response. It seems as if it has been slowly ceding market share to Mac (very, very, very slowly) without batting an eye. Hopefully they come out with a very good Windows (or make Vista more compatible and smoother).

I love Macs, but my poor Windows XP PC hasn't been touched for over a year. I'd love to start working on both of them again. Better to choose from 3 OS's (incl. Linux) than 1 or 2.

If microsoft develops television commercials like they do operation systems, we should see the new ads in 3-5 years.

I like Vista, all my software and peripherals have worked since day 1, including my X-Fi soundcard. I install it on all Windows machines I build and recommend it to anyone that asks for an upgraded Windows machine. I also recommend OS X to people who want a brand new machine. I enjoy both, run both and will always use both. Could Microsoft done a better job? Yep. Can Apple do a better job? Yep. Is Apple's OS bullet proof? Nope. Is Windows bullet proof? Hell no. Turn the tables around and Apple controls more than 80% of the market and I bet they get attacked all day from hackers. What Microsoft needs to do is rebuild Windows from scratch. I don't care if it takes 7 years to write this program. Hell the registry has been in use since Windows 3.1, albeit a very rarely used system back then.

I couldn't have said it any better.

Axel Springer are one company, and they're in publishing which is a traditional Mac stronghold.

It has nothing to do with publishing...go check the news and you will see the reasons. Lower TCO, more security, less need for support and ease of use are key. The rest of the PC-using world is just starting to discover this truth, and it's gonna be even better when "Microsoft Certified Professionals" stop being CTOs or filling the IT departments in most corporations.

I truly hope MS starts its smear campaign, because it's gonna show even more clearly how crappy Vista is in all senses, when compared to OS X.

In summary, there is NO reason whatsoever to defend a PC, apart from legacy reasons derived from MS's abuse of market power. Apple, on the other hand, attains market because of its competence, innovation and overall reliability of its products. And this is NOT sanctionable under any civilized countries' antitrust laws.

Again: MICROSOFT IS DEAD. Sensible people just need to bury it now.

What platform will be used....

What platform will be used to design the new Windows ads?
Just wondering.
If it's a Mac - is that irony?

Cannot wait to see what they come up with. I feel sorry for the group that's assigned this job.

One doesn't even have to consider whether OS X is better than Vista or whether Apple's ads are biased or not to know that this is a losing proposition for Microsoft. This is simple advertising 101.

Apple is the underdog. That entitles them to aggressive comparison ads in most consumers' minds. Microsoft is the big, bad wolf. If they go out on the attack, it makes them look like a bully.

As it is, there are a small number of people who don't like Apple's ads, thinking they're too biased (what is an ad SUPPOSED to be?). For those people, the ads make Apple look bad and they sympathize with Microsoft. If Microsoft does the same thing, it negates any positive feelings they might have had from those people.

Microsoft's only real play here is to continue to ignore the Apple ads and come out with some really compelling reason why people should use Vista. If they even mention Apple or Mac OS X, they're sunk (their very mentioning of OS X gives it credibility in the consumer's mind).

The way I see it:
Microsoft= Roman Empire that is crumbling
Apple= Barbarian invaders who won at the end

I really hope Vista's not as bad as I heard or else my mom will slay me for getting her a new computer.

I think most of the hilarity about this is the concept of the ad. Vista has positives, but Windows as a whole has WAY MORE PROBLEMS than any Mac ever dreamed of. The dude who said it was "rock solid" made me wonder if Bill Gates posts on MacRumors...

The deal is Apple knows how to make good ads. Microsoft doesn't. Having William H. Macy explain how Windows is going to help your business through streamlining the **snooze**

There isn't much that Microsoft can brag about other than marketshare, which is slowly fading. That's not a hip ad. That's a Blue Bell ice cream ad. Have fun with that, MS ad department!

I don't get the "too biased" complaint. If someone thinks they're stupid, too cheeky, whatever, I get that. But Apple is spending money trying to get people to buy it's products. Gee, wonder why there's a bias??? If you really want to see telling people that poo doesn't stink, check out SUV ads. It's funny seeing an auto company tout 18 mpg as good.

"It was a good run," says Bill. "You can fool people for only so long, or up until something better comes along," and, Jim Allchin said it best, "Vista is not going to work - we should be doing it like OS X."

News Flash - iPhone and Vista Work Flawlessly!

About time Microsoft started countering these ridiculous assumptions those Mac ads try to tell people. I've been using Vista with an nVidia 8800GTX now for a year, and I love my system. I've never reformatted the thing once, with XP I did a reformat like every 6 months. Even if Vista started having the problems Mac users think it does, I would never buy a Mac, because I like to do other things with a computer rather than just take red eye out photos and post them online for friends.
