I had a Surface Pro for awhile for work (have to have Windows, despite my best efforts). Couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Now I'm on an HP EliteBook convertible, and whilst it's no Mac, it's definitely better than the Surface was.

I know a lot of us are poo poo-ing the ad. But, how many want a Surface or Surface-like device that runs Mac OS? I know I do!

I couldn't be less interested in a product like that. But then I also wonder why anyone would buy a $1000+ iPad Pro and $400 keyboard plus other accessories in a world where the MBA exists.

The entire form factor is just awful to me. Let alone paying a lot more to have that horrendous form factor.l

Architects are NOT engineers. In fact you can find a ton of memes and jokes online about Civil and Structural Engineers crashing with Architects for their lack of engineering knowledge and even physical reality.

There are two architectural programs in the US that can be considered engineering, one is "Structural Architecture" and another is "Architectural Engineering", those you can consider Engineers since they have a knowledge in physics, math, mechanics, earthquakes, etc. and not just drawing and distribution of spaces.

Thank you. I honestly thought ALL architects would/should know about 'physics, math, mechanics, earthquakes, wind velocity and how it affects the structure and neighbouring structures (vortices).

Problem with the surface lineup is that its both a half baked laptop and a half baked tablet
So it does neither very well.

I think it’s only a useful device if you need full Office functionality And still want some touch functionality.
Especially Excel lacks some more advanced functionality on iPads or Mac laptops

For me the iPad Pro (small one) + Magic keyboard is the perfect companion device to a home with a desktop (iMac) where you want to use the iPad to travel and at work as a mail, MS Teams, planner Device and as an entertainment device at home.

But I’m bias because I personally hate laptops, and i do like the iPadOS experience

Who at Microsoft is so stupid to even come up with this ad?!? This is something I wouldn't have even pitched at an internal meeting! If they want to make a comparison, they should compare it to the iPad Air or the Pro, both of which would still win the comparison without any issue.
It feels like a hybrid of the "I'm a Mac" and "What's a computer?" ads. The former were amusing for a bit, the latter were always insipid. I agree with those that say that a more balanced comparison would be against an iPad, but it is an ad featuring a child and not an actual like-for-like review.

From everything I’ve read security and privacy handling is better on Mac. End of story for me.

These comparisons tend to work in a quaint way for an underdog. Probably why they were supposedly well received when Apple ran comparison commercials. Does MS consider itself the underdog?

With M1 introduction to MAC; everyone including Microsoft worried in computing business. Going forward, you will see many more ADs like this.
I think the only ones that need to be worried are Intel and AMD as others can transition to ARM based machines and certainly MS could develop a custom ARM with a partner if they want; and them sell it to manufacturers. Given their work with ARM Windows and devices I would not be surprised to find out they've been doing just that.

Core i3 great for gaming!? 🤣 Hahahahah! 🤣 Maybe for Candy Crush...
What a joke.... Is this their best campaign yet? Try to sell to the Surface Pro to children?
Little they know that when those children try it and their games lag or get a message like: “Your video card is not capable of running this game”, they will shout it all over social media, and that would be the end of their campaign.

i3 Iris is usable with low quality settings and 720p. If it's newer i3 with Xe graphics it's more usable.

Hopefully i3 Xe isn't far from i7 Xe since GPU does most of the work in games.

Yes, those are prime examples of just how much Apple is not interested in gaming. Hint 3 would be the IAP hell they invented.
Compared to what?? Having to pay $60 or more upfront for a single game?
As a consumer, I don't agree with IAP, but at least many people get to play and pay as they go.
The fact that developers take advantage of this 'feature' so their games are pointless unless you buy Gems, it's a totally different story.

In the final logo shot, they show it's the official platform of the NFL.
Does anyone remember when they first gave the coaches Surfaces and they kept calling them iPads.
Then coaches got frustrated and were throwing the surfaces because they sucked so much.
Then they kept the surface case and put their personal iPads in them because the surfaces were complete garbage.

Totally remember when this happened. MS was so hoping that this kind of deal would translate to the same kind of penetration to consumers that Apple had with the iPad, which clearly it did not. I think I remember seeing shots of some of these Surface tablets being effected by the dreaded BSoD at games.

I wouldn't recommend a 13-inch Intel MBP for gaming either.

However, this is IMO worse, because you have the detachable keyboard + kickstand setup. That's cute for when you temporarily want to use them, but it just doesn't make for a great gaming setup.

For casual gaming, an iPad would be way better (and, form-factor-wise, you might just get the iPad Air + Magic Keyboard and arrive at roughly the price of the Surface Pro, but with way better specs), and for 'serious' gaming, you're way better off getting a console or a PC desktop.
If you get an external keyboard and mouse, it's ok. Nearly every PC game is for Windows, and most games are reasonably playable on Surface hardware. The MBP's only advantage is the built-in keyboard, and the disadvantage is that many games are Windows-only or heavily Windows-optimized. Some of my friends in college had a Surface for school and also played games on it. Just can't play AAA titles (aka boring ones) or heavy sims like BeamNG.

Even my Mac Pro kinda sucks for games. Can't even play csgo at a reasonable framerate because the game is so poorly optimized for Mac, and I know a Surface can play it. If I use Boot Camp, everything runs great, but I don't care enough about games to bother.

The only thing I’m envious of is pen support—not touch and not the detachable keyboard (I prefer convertible). Oh and it has the applications I need, but that will even out eventually, and until then I’ll stick with my Intel Mac laptop.

The kickstand would be cool for the iPad Pro maybe.
But if you had pen support on your Mac, what would compel you to use your iPad Pro?

One small bump and my Surface 3's screen shattered a few years ago... My numerous Ipads, Iphones and Macs (at least 10) have undergone frequent impacts/drops (my bad) and never once did any one of my Apple devices shatter. Sure, this is an N=1 problem, but I have lost my faith in Microsoft. Sure, it is nice to have the pen, but I am happy with Ipad+Macbook Air M1 -- together they do wonders.
Our original iPad broke the first week we had it. We hadn’t bought a cover yet as they were back ordered. It was a freak thing. On the train tray table it slid off, against the carpeted wall, onto the carpeted floor. But on the way there was a thin trim edge on the train wall, that just happened to catch the corner of the iPad.
So it happens. But the only one we ever broke.

Why would you be against touch that would make tasks like navigating Apple Maps so much easier and quicker than finger gymnastic gestures? It'll be just another input option but you're not forced to use it and can stick to the hard way with touchpad.
