I don't get what's cool about it design wise. It's a black plastic band. If this was coming from Samsung people would be calling it ugly.

I guess functional is more important to some people. At least it can be work for 48 CONTINUOUS hours, rather than 12-16. And does what it does better (more sensors). FWIW, I don't need a piece of jewelery that can display photos or send heart drawings to another device.

I'd hardly call myself a watch connoisseur, but to my untrained eye, I don't see much special about it. I wouldn't call it a hideous failure of design, because it's not. But I also wouldn't say it's all that spectacular, either. It's very...

...plain.

That's about the most damning thing you can say about an Apple product.

I need to see it in person. The pics don't impress me. The one posted a few posts above looks like a square blob.

This looks like a great fitness/health tracker that is also a watch. I've been waiting for one of these.

Although I'm not a fan of any tracker that's on your wrist. Anyone who has had a fitbit flex knows how exaggerated the numbers end up being. If you drive a car you'll be surprised how many "steps" you've taken if you tap the steering wheel or make sharp turns. I ditched the flex and got the fitbit one. Best fitness device I've ever worn

Same shape but completely different

We all know Apple's history with claim to shapes....so why even try to make that argument?

Sorry I have no idea what you're referring to, but I was making the point that this form factor is not new.
What differentiates the apple watch was not the form factor, which has also been around for a while now (rectangular wrist screens... Nothing new).
He was the one saying that the form factor chosen by MS is innovative.

I feel like I'm in some unreality bubble watching all these fashion people GUSHING about the Apple Watch and I'm thinking, "really, this thing is so clunky and plain looking". WTF are these people smoking?

I think this watch looks awesome, but my main concern right now is the orientation of the screen. In the video, they show a runner wearing it with the screen on the underside of her wrist. That's not comfortable for me at all.

Alternatively, if you wear the band like a watch, I feel like the screen will be in portrait mode. Most of the images I've seen make it look like the screen content is organized width wise. I don't see an easy way to look at the screen on this watch without putting my fist in the air. That, or looking at my wrist at a 45 degree angle.

The built in heart rate monitor, GPS, and slim profile make this band very appealing to me. I don't plan on getting an Apple Watch because I don't find it that attractive, the battery life is unfortunate, it doesn't have GPS on its own (I want to replace my Garmin Forerunner for casual runs), and the watch depends on an iPhone (which I have) for a lot of its capability. The Apple Watch is clearly going to have application capabilities that we won't see in the MS Watch. I'm guessing I'll want in for the second generation of the Apple Watch. For the time being, I'lll enjoy my iPhone 6, and hopefully I can use a band like this to receive text messages and to check caller ID.

I've been waiting to see what FitBit will release. FitBit announced some new products in the last week, but I don't think any of them have anything on this watch. They might have some more advanced fitness software (I'm not sure), but I would guess Microsoft will build out their software ASAP.

Looks good. It's just trying to do a handful of useful watch tasks without trying to be everything. It's possible something I would pick up at some point.

I don't doubt that about the comments here, but I bet that people would buy it like crazy. That's the power of the Apple brand. People bought the 4S which was 3 generations old, ditto for the iPad 2. Both of those products were long in the tooth, but they had the power of the Apple name.

Probably. I'm sure Watch will be more popular than some of the comments here suggest too. But forget about Apple. If it was Samsung or LG releasing this there would be a collective "meh" from the tech press. But ever since Ballmer left they've jumped on the Microsoft bandwagon and it's reflected in their reporting. A perfect example is The Verge puff piece that went up tonight.

But when are you going to charge it then? D:

Really? Seemed like a fair piece to me. Most Verge articles on MS are hit pieces, even in the Nadella era.

All hands on "reviews" I've read say it looks a lot less clunky in person. In fact the impressions from those who have seen the watch in person and those who haven't are quite different. My guess is it's something one has to see in person to really form an opinion.

Nah it was clearly a puff piece IMO. Most of The Verge posters think they're pro-Apple but I disagree. The sheer number of Apple articles is more avout page views/clicks than anything else. Throw up anything on Apple and people click on it.

Nice first effort by Microsoft (assuming it delivers), but I personally would MUCH rather have the Apple Watch on my wrist than that, purely from a looks standpoint.

You really have to see the Apple Watch in person and handle it to make a fair assessment. From what I have read it sounds like a high quality piece.

I like the idea that MS has made this as a secondary device not designed to take the place of your favorite watch or watches. It's not trying to be too many things to too many people.

I believe it's because smartwatch are still a relatively new thing mixing with the strength of the Apple brand that's making it so appealing.

The weird thing about it is that if you compare the watch to any of Apple's other breakthrough devices, it doesn't following along with their usual patterns. What's the first thing they always say? "We rethought the blah, and came up with this awesome new thing". They don't do anything truly new, but their products are always well thought out, and do things a little different, a little easier than anyone else.

And what's the Apple Watch? It's a watch that's had smart functionality crammed into it. Not really any different than the Galaxy Gear or any of the other smartwatches out there. It's banking entirely on style, of which it only has a tiny bit more of than the competition.

People can gush about it all they want, but it should be all but obvious by now that a traditional watch body doesn't make for a good standalone smart device. It's too cramped, too small. And the way you interact with it? Through the crown? Yeah, they work great for winding your watch, but flipping through apps and menus? It strikes me as being a little awkward. Not exactly the elegance solution we usually expect from Apple.

All in all, it's not all that great of a product. It's eeeeehhhhh, exactly like every other smartwatch on the market.

The bands do look pretty nice, though.

I'm not in the market for an additional watch because my current watches are fantastic and will never ever be replaced. The Apple Watch is therefore out of the question. I wouldn't want to wear two watches simultaneously.

I AM in the market for a fitness band, that isn't too obvious as being a watch. This actually seems quite interesting. Does it offer Health integration? If it does, I will check this out. Never thought I would say this about a MS product...

Rubber Soul Band

Let me guess, Microsoft paid McCartney for the rights to "Band On The Run" from Wings for a new MS Band commercial aka Stones "Start Me Up" for MS Windows.

Not waterproof no use for swimmers

Just like the iWatch this is only water resistant so absolutely no use to swimmers, and make sure you take them off in the shower or heavy rain. Garmin and Suunto are the only ones doing real sports watches. These are jus toys

You can't compare this to Apple's device. This is a basically a data collector. I'm not saying that as a bad thing just different focus. Apple's not really a data company, they don't really think that way, so I'm not surprised we didn't see something similar from them. I think Watch was designed to be a nice piece of fashion/jewelry that also does some cool techy stuff. And my guess is Apple has saved some things to announce at next years launch.

Perhaps it would make sense to wait until the product has been released and we get reviews? You might be right, but since basically no one but Apple employees have actually used this device writing it off might be a bit premature.

I like MS' take on the design an functionality, as the band could be worn on the other wrist in addition to a normal watch. What concerns me is that MS is open about the fact that they want to collect the data and start analyzing it.

Yes, more than the apple watch but does it have the same funationality?

This seems to focus mostly on health and clock while apple watch does about everything. You probably can't use it as a phone or receive messages or control a presentation with it like you can the apple watch.

Can anyone find out if it shares health information to HealthKit? This is what I want to know the most. Thanks!
