I just figured out one parameter that makes my copy of Office 2008 crash on close when on Snow Leopard:

Printing.

If I open a .doc, and then quit word, no problem. Open the same .doc, and then print, and then close, then it crashes on quit.
edit: happens with .dock too. The printer I am connecting to is an HP Color Laserjet 5550dn

After some worming around in both my system and online, I have figured out the issue.

It's not Apple's fault nor Microsoft in my case (although either could probably do something to fix it).

It's EndNote (X1 to be precise).

If I have the EndNote X1 CWYW bundle in the Office/Startup/Word folder (which Word reads and loads during boot, and links Word with EndNote), it WILL crash after printing, upon exit. If I remove that bundle, Word is totally happy.

Another case of a third-party add-on creating issues. It's a known issue with EndNote (you can see on their site), so why they just report it and don't fix it, I don't know. Two versions older, so I suppose an incentive top upgrade. Oh well, I don't use EndNote much anymore, so I'll survive without the linked bundle. If I do find I need it, I can reinstate it anytime, and the crash is harmless during that time.

Do you have EndNote installed? There is a known issue with EndNote and Word that causes crashes when Word closes. No fix yet.

Edit: Just saw mrkgoo's comments. This issue also occurs with EndNote X2.

Wow - I never even thought to think about Endnote being the problem. Yes I use Endnote X2.

Pretty pathetic of them to acknowledge the problem but provide no fix for it. I just saw that they have X3 available and I believe I can get it for free through my college. Will give that a try and see how it goes.

Thanks.
