Really? What about microsoft surface? No one has come up with anything close to this.

What is inovative about surface?

IMHO It is the same thing as a multitouch screen like the one on the iPhone, but using a projector and camera to see the outline of the object that is in contact with the screen.

IMHO It is just another implementation of the same principles that Apple released in previous products. Also it is very expensive and easy to have problems with alignment of the component, big bulky, combersome, looks great (yes), but not really new.

What do you expect from M$. When was the last time they came up with ANYthing original.

Zune = ipod copy
Windows = OS X copy
Xbox = PS2 copy
Office = Lotus copy

There is absolutely nothing in M$ inventory that they didn't copy off someone else.

Yeah, but then with that logic...

iPod = Hango PJB100 copy (first HD mp3 player, which was developed by Compaq)
OS X = NeXT copy. (Even the original Mac OS concept was borrowed from Xerox PARC).
PS2 = Nintendo NES copy = Atari 400 copy = Fairchild Channel F copy
Lotus = Visicalc copy

Technology is a evolutionary process. Even Apple has borrowed product ideas and then improved on them rather than developed the original concept.

It's a big-ass table that isn't in consumers' households. So it's next to worthless for you and me.

Fatal Flaw

The fatal flaw with this device is the same one that has hindered tablet PC sales and the Newton, and that is hand writing is much slower for data entry than typing. Pricing is going to be another problem. Netbooks go for as little as $199 so this thing can't cost more than $400.

My only query/sadness is that we're still attempting to replicate old-world habits in an electronic form. By this I mean as a Digital Immigrant the use of a stylus, the 'feel' of paper folding/turning and the hardback book form is indeed comforting, but really at some point it would be nice if someone embraced the growing army of digital natives and came up with a completely new interface paradigm. Apple?

+1 for the sentiment expressed
+100 for the bolded phrase

honestly that's a pretty impressive demo.

make the real product look and function just like that, and you'll have at least a few re-switchers...

the potential here is hugemongus.

I hope the e-ink niche takes notice of this product and do a bit of copy-cat'ing :cool:

I want something like that for reading e-papers, e-books and PDF's. And with e-ink = excellent battery life, no problem reading in the sun and no allergic reactions to the damn ink (I'm hypersensitive - literally - to inks and glossy magasines).

Edit: Even if no e-ink copy products show up, I would go for this thing, even with the downfalls of "real" screens.

Edit 2 (yeah, I know): I'm a leftie, I hope one can choose which side is what on that thing, or have it fold all the way back to make up for the awkwardness of being leftie.

Oh look Steve Jobs a Stylus

It would be a shame to allow a Microsoft product in my house again but this is exactly what I have been looking for... well almost, I am looking for a real product.

I am afraid the Apple tablet will be a large iPod with nifty multi touch web browsing. I want something modern with handwriting recognition AKA Newton 2010.

Believe it or not Mr. Jobs, the educated populous of the world is well trained in the use of the stylus from our first day in school through graduation.

Look this is no iPhone -

Except that:

1) We can't tell if this device has a virtual keyboard or a slot to add an external
2) Handwriting recognition is what hobbled the devices you mentioned. No word if this device had HW recognition or if you just use it like a digital notepad. The latter would be fine for taking notes at a meeting.
3) Pricing depending on capability. A decent netbook w/ 6cell battery is about $350. Also unknown if wireless providers will sell a subsidized version. Unsubsidized though, I think people would pay more than a $50 premium for a device like this. In any event, I guarantee if Apple comes out w/ a similar tablet it will cost at least $800. A 64GB Touch is $400.

How about Virus's? :D

While I like the idea of this device and what it seems to offer, I'm wondering how much of the "Wow, Cool, Neat" aspects of this device end up in an actual product. I'm always reminded of those cool concept cars that seem to encompass so much fun, great design, innovative ideas, etc. only to end up in the final "real world" production as another drab looking piece of crap.

Also, I wonder if their use of Pinching will make it to the end, as Apple seems to hold the patent now on it?

Please explain how they copied the Apple tablet with this? Given no one has seen even a prototype of the Apple tablet? I very much doubt the apple product will be made up of two screens. Apple does not invent everything in the whole world, they take current tech and apply innovation to it, its amazing how many individuals now think apple invented the touch surface due to the iphone, for gods sake learn to google.

Windows 7 is not $29! State your facts correctly, that is a student discount only, and incase you never went through university both Apple and M$ offer very nice Student discounts for a very long time.

The Apple tablet has not even been confirmed yet.

They didn't invent it? No kidding...? :rolleyes: Yes, and I'm a student, which makes it $29. People take things too damn literally here...

I am in

If this one is not too costly and yet as responsive as Zune HD, Apple is going to loose the tablets if they did not have an idea like this.

This is a sure winner. Especially, the way the thing looks, if it has an OS LIKE the iPhone OS 3.1, it will become the future of consumer computing...

Wasn't the blue screen a death a 90s thing. Windows 98, 95, etc? I bought a macbook but some of these outdated comments that get constantly repeated over and over are really antagonizing. Why not just like a product regardless of the brand, rather than being obsessed with one. We're in 2009.

The BSOD is still there. I was getting BSODs last night on my fresh install of Windows 7.

The culprit is usually a bad third-party driver. MS still gets some of the blame, though, because their DDK/WDK is pretty bad and they don't maintain compatibility between OS versions.

The thing on that is, did not Microsoft Surface(which was released and demoed far earlier than the iPhone) not show the same sort of motions? I imagine something as simple as that must have prior art that would invalid such a claim.

Either way, an interesting product though one I have absolutely no use for. Here's hoping this spurs some competition so that both companies end up with a better product.

Why are people even talking about this? Microsoft loves to do insane futuristic designs and release them. They're like hey, look at this neat stuff that we may or may not have in the future. Kids can talk to each other through glass walls. People in airports can see floating icon hallucinations. You can use your MicrosoftPhone that can break into two because the only thing better than an iPhone is two iPhone copies from Microsoft.

Have we forgotten that ad? Probably, since none of those products have been released by Microsoft yet (and none of them will ever be released because it just shows how their designers are completely detached from the rest of the company).

Well, I haven't gotten one since before Windows XP. And I can't think of anyone who has since XP came out. If you got a blue screen of death, then you were one of the rare ones. My point is that the hard core mac users need to update their criticism, or better yet just enjoy their mac without thinking or comparing it to Windows, because their just going to look silly talking about something they are not familiar with, and actually turn off the people who are actually familiar with Windows. I remember getting a blue screen of death on Windows 98, and that's it. Do you have any idea how long that was? It was actually 9 year ago.

*Looks at Zune HD*

Sorry, you were saying?

You guys don't get it, do you? After years of being schooled by Apple on design and user functionality did you really think they would never learn?

Microsoft are a different beast these days. They've taken a pounding - and rightly so - and come out with a very different philosophy on what an acceptable product should look and feel like.

Which is actually good news for everyone considering the stagnant pit Apple seem to be wallowing in over the last year or so.

Well, I haven't gotten one since before Windows XP. And I can't think of anyone who has since XP came out.

The BSoD still exists on Vista but it's exceedingly rare and usually due to hardware conflicts. However, they're far more prevalent than viruses for Vista or W7 - by which I mean remote access malware that can install, replicate and transmit without third party intervention - mainly because there actually aren't any meaningful ones out there at all.

The trouble with a lot of the posters in this Forum is that their calendars seem to be stuck in 2006.
