Ahead of the launch of its Xbox One console, Microsoft today released its Xbox One Smartglass app for the iPhone and the iPad. The app is designed to allow users to navigate their Xbox One consoles using the keyboard and touchscreen of the iOS device, much like the existing Xbox SmartGlass app.

With Xbox One Smartglass, an iOS device can function as a remote control to maneuver through the Xbox One's dashboard. It also displays information on the device when playing music or TV through the console and it can be used to browse the web.

In addition, the app allows users to search for Xbox One content that can be saved for download on the console and it also facilitates achievement tracking and messaging. The app includes game help and game clips as well.
In the living room:
- Navigate your Xbox One console using your device's keyboard and touch
- Control your media and set top box with the SmartGlass remote control
- Browse the web on your TV using your mobile device
- Enhance what you are watching or playing with SmartGlass companions
- Increase performance with faster connections and reliability

In the living room and on the go:
- Search, browse, and pin content to play on your Xbox One console
- Track achievements, get game help, message friends, and watch game clips
Microsoft's Xbox One console will be available beginning on Friday, November 22. Xbox One Smartglass can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Wonder why it doesn't show up when I search for it on either my iPad or iPhone. Seems like the remote app except for the X1. Guess I'll give it a try.

It takes a bit for the App Store search to find newly released apps. This one just hit.

At least it isn't only compatible with a their phones, unlike a certain company's smartwatch...

With all this stuff, I'm beginning to doubt that you can just pop in a game to play it anymore. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I really really like the new app. Obviously haven't had a chance to pair it with my X1, but overall I really like the app over the last SmartGlass app. I think it is going to be a very nice companion app. I just hope the X1 turns out to not be a bust.

I really like that these systems are supporting iOS but the current Xbox app takes FOREVER to connect which makes it a little pointless since navigating with my controller ends up taking the same amount of time.

This new app seems to connect to Xbox servers much much faster. The old app did take forever in that aspect. As far as navigating the new X1 I don't really see what the point is of using your iPad or iPhone over the controller. Seems pointless to put your controller down to pick up your tablet to do essentially the same thing. Also with the voice commands being much better with kinect, it seems pointless. Only use I can see for it is organizing your X1 when you aren't near it, or answering your Live messages.

You definitely can. On PS4 it's really simple, and very fast. I have no reason to believe it will be any different on Xbox. This generation is going to be amazing for both systems.

The app allows you to play games on your tablet. There are some games that allow you to use your tablet or phone as part of the game. It's a awesome feature and it allows you to take the xbox to the next level.

I suppose it's handy Apple redesigned iOS. The WP look integrates much better now :p

I think anything that involves text entry benefits. I used to love the chatpad on my 360 controller, and I can see this being a suitable replacement. The fact we can use Kinect to enter in DLC codes now may reduce my need to type anything particularly often however.

Seems to me most of the meaningful tablet play in most of the newer games have their own standalone app. BF4 commander mode has a standalone app, The Division will have a standalone companion app, same with Watch Dogs. Not sure how much actual gaming will go on through the SmartGlass app.

This new Xbox doesn't have to connect to any servers or internet. It uses Wifi Direct, directly connecting your device to your xbox one console. So we will see a nice improvement there.

So, is "X1" going to be the internet nomenclature for the Xbox One? Because that will be annoying when trying to discuss the Comcast X1, which has many similar features in the control area. (not that I want either device)

Goes by X1 on a lot of the Xbox related boards I am on. If you don't care for Comcast X1 or the Xbox One what is the point of you discussing either?

So I was the one who tried to use the unveiling of an application to bash a completely unrelated company? Weird. I could have sworn I hadn't.

Worst. Acceptance speech. Ever.

The person had a valid point though. The app is available on not only the company's own device, but devices of competitors too. Unlike the device compatibility list of stated smartwatch...

Therefore: Your comment was infinitely more pointless. Now take this bronze statuette.

No.

One of them is merely AN APP.

The other is a device that has to run certain software.

One is kind of more complicated than the other.

It'd be like saying a car and a bicycle are pretty much the same thing.
