By default, your iPhoto Library lives in the Pictures folder in your home directory, and is called iPhoto Library. Copying this 'file' will bring the full iPhoto Library over to the new machine. The iPhoto Library is just a wrapper for the more complex file structure that iPhoto uses. If you right click it and choose show package contents, you can get some insight as to how iPhoto manages your photos

Note: If you press and hold the option key immediately after launching iPhoto, you will get a pop up that allows you to point to the iPhoto Library you want to use. You may also create new iPhoto Libraries that will allow you to split your iPhoto Library, if desired.

I ordered the SSD last night and will have it tomorrow night. I bought an enclosure so I can keep my current HDD as a backup and will store it away.

I need to not only transfer over my folders with photos and music but also the iPhoto library, is there a how-to somewhere or how can I move that over? Is it held inside of a folder somewhere?

What he said above. Lol.

All your files (docs, photos, movies, music, etc) is stored in your home folder (folder with home icon). If you're worried about transferring files use migration assistant and transfer files only to keep your new install clean. The assistant will put everything where it needs to be.

It's located in /Users/yourusername/Pictures

Just finished installing the SSD and installing the OS. Haven't moved over any media, will do that tomorrow, but WOW it is FAST! I love it!

Where is the "home folder"? I didn't see a folder with a home icon. I plan to use migration assistant tonight to bring over my docs/photos/movies/music/iTunes. I think the last question I have is; with migration assistant, will it bring over both of my iPhoto libraries since my wifes was held under her macbook account and mine held under my macbook account? I saw when I went into finder and looked at my old HDD connected externally that there were 2 users. I guess if there is an easier way for my wife and I both to sync to one iPhoto, i'm willing to listen but I don't want all of her photos synced to my phone when I sync iPhoto through iTunes?

Do I need to create 2 profiles and keep her iPhoto separate? If that is the case, can migration assistant pull her iPhoto library to her account and use migration assistant to pull my iPhoto library to my account?

Migration Assistant will pull in both accounts and everything in them.

It sounds like you already setup and account though yes? If you already made an account then try to use Migration Assistant to import that same account you will have duplicates and a big mess. What you want to do is make a new temp admin account then login to that account and delete all other accounts, then run Migration Assistant from within the temp account. That will pull in the two accounts and all their data.

Then after the import you can login to one of the real accounts and delete the temp account if everything is okay.

Yes when I installed the OS, It prompted me to create an account and go through all the steps like the computer is brand new. So I assume I need to follow what you suggested? That will restore both user accounts and all associated media?

Yep... sure will.

Just in case you ever need to do this again, during that setup process you went through (before account setup) there should have been a screen that said something like "do you want to import...". If you picked that it would have run through the migration process and pulled in your accounts and data without having to mess around with this temp account business. No harm done though, the temp method will work fine.

Possible to transfer just files this way? I normally like to transfer files only, no settings/drivers/apps. That way its as clean as possible.

To reiterate I just want to transfer media not settings and apps just like stated here by MrX. Now I'm confused.

Use the migration assistant and read through the options it gives you. There is a point where you can choose to transfer everything or just certain types of files. It's easy.

You will get this screen where you can pick what you want to move over.

Looking at Weaslboy's image post. You just want to checkmark the two users.

Ok I think I got it. To recap: Create a temp admin account, delete the new account I just made, run the migration assistant as an admin, select both user upper check boxes which will take all of the stuff cascaded within it (photos/music etc) then reboot into mine and my wifes accounts to confirm everything is there and once complete, delete the temp admin account. Is this correct? I should have everything I had on my old HDD at this point without all the junk files/settings and possible corrupted files. Transferring a couple hundred GB of stuff with migration assistant will probably take what, like 2 hours?

Yup you got it. Transfer speed is dependent on USB2 vs 3 and your drive. After your migration is complete I normally keep the old drive for a week or so before deleting it.

My old HDD is in an enclosure connected via USB3.0.

I will be keeping that original HDD in the enclosure forever, storing it away since it contains my wedding photos and important media on it. This way I have that copy plus a copy on my SSD and I also cloned my HDD to a partition on my other 1TB external so I should be good now. Have no need to erase my old HDD as I don't need the space. I feel safe keeping it in my safe and now have 3 copies of my media.

Exactly.

Only thing is if the old install had say a corrupt document in the Documents folder, this will bring that file over. This is not likely though. Usually corruption issues are related to the OS system files, and they don't come over as part of this migration.

Followed these steps and found my old HDD in migration assistant but when I tell it transfer docs and data only (I don't get the screen you posted) it says I have 0 data. It is there though bc I can manually access it and see the media.

In what format is this external drive? Is it just the original drive you pulled?

If it is, you should be able to select the center choice there to import from a Time Machine or other disk then get the screen I posted.

I tinkered around and now I see our 2 accounts but the screen looked nothing like yours. I am running the transfer now. We'll see.

Hmm... okay let's try and walk thru it.

Login to the temp account and attach the old drive in the USB enclosure, then launch Migration Assistant (MA).

You should see this and pick the top choice.

Then you should see this and pick the BOTTOM choice.

Then you should see this where you can pick your old drive from the USB enclosure.

Then you should get the selection screen I posted earlier. Check box the user accounts then below each user account check what you want to move over.

Are you not getting this last checkbox screen at all?

ug7Xd1E.png

Edit: Saw your update. Yours will look different because of the multiple accounts, but the choices should be the same. Glad you got it moving along.

My migration assistant screens look different but I got to the same end result. My screen where I select the user accounts didn't show the items under it, I was only able to check the user boxes and unchecked the system other files etc like we discussed. Halfway done migrating as if 5:53pm est
