Geekbench scores are misleading. This CPU Upgrad looks good on paper, but it doesnt help very much in more realistic scenarios. Techblogs found out that every Core M model starts to throttle after 2min under heavy loads. In the worst case you can use the extra power from the BTO CPU Upgrade only for a few seconds until it slows down to stay in its thermal profil.

That's precisely what the intended audience typically needs, though: a boost for a short period of time.

Good god

When you said "more portable" you lost me as you just grabbing at straws. If you have a hard time taking around a 3.5lb 13in machine but are just fine with a 2lb 12in machine you must be a really frail 80+yr old man or have a medical condition.

Yes, he said "more portable" not "portable".

1.5lbs makes a difference when you're carrying it around every day, from place to place, in a shoulder bag.

That's about half the weight of a big college textbook, which seems significant to me.

My MBP requires its own bag, the MB, like the iPad, could slip into my wife's purse.

Guess what, I don't really care that you think I'm grasping at straws. I'm sure I'll be happy with my purchase when it arrives and if I'm not I can return it. I was just attempting to answer your question but you don't seem like someone people can reason with since you're dismissing just what I'm saying.

I went from a 11" MBA to 13" rMBP and the weight makes a huge difference. It's not like I'm carrying a bag with just the laptop in it from my car to wherever I set it down.

Such a nice portable device must be perfect for travel. If only it could charge an iPhone...

I don't understand why people are trying to figure out why someone wants to buy it.

I'm getting it because I insist on having a retina screen and want something more portable than my 13" rMBP. I don't want to wait for the Airs to get a retina screen. I don't care about having 1 port. I don't do anything that needs a faster more capable CPU. Is this machine expensive? Yes but if I'm willing to pay that much for what it offers, why does it bother others so much?

People can do whatever they like with their money. However, some people try to warn others from buying a Prius that costs the same as a Tesla. ;)

The screen is exactly why so many of us ordered the new Macbook. I wanted a tiny, portable companion to my 15" rMBP. I tried the 11" Macbook Air, but I returned it, because the screen was awful. The new Macbook is smaller than the 11" Air, but with a larger, much better screen, which is exactly what I wanted.

I'm hoping the 1.2 GHz CoreM performs better with that wonderful retina display, early results with the 1.1 GHz processor have been disappointing.

Um, no. As someone who travels a lot, that 1.5 lbs makes a big difference. You might be covering a lot of ground or carrying other stuff in your bag, and it all adds up. Or you might be looking at a weight limit and that 1.5 lbs limits what else you can bring. Try toting a laptop and camera gear - that 1.5 lbs may limit how many lenses you can bring.

Except there is no other retina Mac that's as portable as the MB. So there is no Tesla in this situation and I don't want to wait for one.

I've never understood this logic. When I'm traveling and the portable office backpack is just 1 of the bags I'm lugging thru the airport, every pound counts.

I'm sure others are loaded down with camera gear, video gear.. etc.

The 11" MBA is equally as portable. Though I'm not sure which would be the Tesla and which would be the Prius in this situation. Both have drawbacks and strengths.

You missed the part where I insisted it has a retina screen. It's the reason I went from 11" MBA > 13" rMBP.

Agreed I think if people were to compare the MBA 11 next to this they would understand a bit more

This MacBook is going to be near perfect in ~4 years when it's fast, has two USBc ports (one either side), is priced at $999 or less, comes in a 14" version with an SD card slot and has ~18 hours battery life. Yes, I'm aware you can always say this about a tech product, but this will be when I take the plunge on this machine, or sooner if it reaches those goals.

lol, the future of this device isn't more ports. It's no ports.

That wasn't the post I was responding to.

Both machines ARE equally portable. Both have their strengths (for the MB it's the screen, for the MBA it's the power) and their drawbacks (MB - power, MBA - screen).

Like I said, neither is a Tesla and neither is a Prius.

Oh no!

Don't let anyone on here see you write that.

Ethernet ports, CD Drives, SD card slots and multiple USB ports are super important for everyone, RIGHT?

Depends on the use context

When you said "more portable" you lost me as you just grabbing at straws. If you have a hard time taking around a 3.5lb 13in machine but are just fine with a 2lb 12in machine you must be a really frail 80+yr old man or have a medical condition.

If you've ever mountain biked, backpacked, or any other activity that requires trade offs for weight you'll realize how important these things can be in the context of what you need. You might not need the most light weight portable computer but not everyone lives as boring of a life as yours :)

I still do not understand the selling point of this device.

It is more pricey than an Air and slower. Sure but has a nice screen but if there is an Air revision then it's expected to have the ForceTouch and also a Retina display.

The 256GB 11in Air + 8GB RAM is $100 less and much faster, and if you want a bigger screen then the 256GB 13in Air + 8GB is the same price. Both giving you more ports, performance, and the same battery life(11in Air) or more (13in).

I know I'm probably going to be based but unless you REALLY need USB-C or REQUIRE Retina on a sub 13in device I do not get why you would buy the MacBook. I'm all ears as to why ANYONE thinks this is the perfect device for them over the Air, but I have not seen a single person make that statement.

I do admit the Space Grey is sexy though.

This was my dilema. I don't need the processor power or the ports, but I do want portability. I didn't buy the new rMB (on order, we'll see how long it takes to get it :() until I saw and used it in the store.

Yes, the difference between the 11" MBA and the rMB is only 1/3 of a pound, but the new rMB feels more balanced and "feels" much lighter. Hard to explain until you go into the store an pick up both.

What I need is a computer that I can write on, use Illustrator for light figure making, surf the web and make presentations. I do all these things on the go, be it at a coffee shop (writing) or an airplane or while traveling.

If i'm staring at the computer for long periods of time while writing, the retina screen really makes a difference for me.

Interestingly, 13"MBA, 13"MBP and this new laptop are all around the same price point. the 13"MBA has a larger footprint and worst screen, and the 13" isn't just as portable as I would like. Its harder to stuff in a backpack and ride 10mi to work and if I'm doing intercontinental travel, the new rMB footprint and weight helps tremendously.

I'm not too worried about the ports.... i can get around that using dropbox or carrying a USB-C-VGA dongle (which i would need anyway for MBA or MBP to use VGA projectors for presentations).
