It's madness!

Some people can be quite dense, so I’ll try to justify why I want one really bad. For some context, I’m a software developer and I currently use a 2014 15 inch rMBP. I’m not looking for anything to replace this machine, I love it to death, I’m looking for a companion machine because I’m always working remotely out and about and I don’t want to always bring along the 15 incher.

> First, one of the main arguments I constantly see is “this is basically just an expensive Facebook machine, might as well get a Chromebook or a blah-blah-blah”.

I want to use this in as a computer for my profession when I’m on the go. I have a really old Lenovo T61 with Core 2 Duo and 4GB RAM. The thing is an absolute tank and it’s very slow in comparison to even the MacBook, but guess what? It’s still perfectly useable for all of my basic software development tasks. Our project at work spans 3GB code/assets and I can compile and run it just fine, even on this old machine (especially since I replaced the old drive with SSD), so the new MB would be even better. This thing should do just fine outside of Facebook.

> You can get a MacBook Air/Pro cheaper/same price!

Yes, and if portability is your #1 concern and you won’t utilize the power, then why? If safety was my number 1 concern for a new vehicle purchase and my desired car costs as much as some sports car (with terrible safety ratings) then why would I opt for the sports car simply because it has a bigger engine? That is not a concern of mine.

> What year is it? It’s only as powerful as a 2012 Air?

It has a MUCH faster drive than the older Air, it has more RAM than the older Air, the screen is leagues better, it’s significantly lighter, it has an improved trackpad. CPU <> entire machine. In fact, the CPU hasn’t been a bottleneck for a long time for most people. Also, you can’t really expect for them cut this much weight, use a 5 watt TDP CPU and have it be faster than current models, unless you have completely unrealistic expectations of course. Leaps in technology aren’t always about SPEED SPEED SPEED!!! It’s quite impressive what this CPU is capable of, especially because it sips on power like I sip on a fine Scotch.

> It only has 1 port!

If you use ports all the time on the go then this machine is not meant for you. I honestly can’t remember the last time I needed to use a port, most everything I do is wireless. When I’m at home then I don’t care if I use a dongle of some sort because I’m at home, when I’m out and about I want to carry as little as possible.

> You must be frail if you can’t handle a couple extra pounds.

1.5 - 2.0 lbs really does make a significant difference in how the device feels. It’s not about being weak, it’s just that lightweight feels good. This is especially true because I commute via bicycle 90% of the time (30 miles round-trip to work - the lighter the better!). Speaking of bikes, people in the bicycle world spend a TON of money just to shave grams, but in this particular niche you don’t get near as much crap for wanting a lighter bike as you do in the tech world when you want a lighter computer.

> It’s just an iPad with a keyboard!

An iPad size device that runs OS X very capably and handles all my real world and work related needs is EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!

Finally, why the heck to people care so much about other people’s purchases? It’s insane! It’s no better than all the children that argue over which is better, Playstation or XBOX. It’s the same exact mentality.

I still do not understand the selling point of this device.

It is more pricey than an Air and slower
. Sure but has a nice screen but if there is an Air revision then it's expected to have the ForceTouch and also a Retina display.

The 256GB 11in Air + 8GB RAM is $100 less and much faster, and if you want a bigger screen then the 256GB 13in Air + 8GB is the same price. Both giving you more ports, performance, and the same battery life(11in Air) or more (13in).

I know I'm probably going to be based but unless you REALLY need USB-C or REQUIRE Retina on a sub 13in device I do not get why you would buy the MacBook. I'm all ears as to why ANYONE thinks this is the perfect device for them over the Air, but I have not seen a single person make that statement.

I do admit the Space Grey is sexy though.

Answer: the macbook air's screen is crap.

You're welcome.

Clock speeds can only be compared within the same architecture  Read some freaking reviews /benchmarks people, this chip (the 1.3 anyway) almost matches the previous generation core i5!!!

Maybe 50%. Frankly if it wasn't for the single port the machine would certainly come closer to 70% but I suspect that you grossly underestimate the number of Mac users out there that actually use their machine for productive work..

No, i think there are many people that use them for productive work. I just do not equate "productive work" with "must have more than one USB port." Not sure how that prevents you from doing productive work.

See one in person and you will want it.

This is coming from someone with a brand new 2015 13" pro

For someone who uses the laptop (as often as not) for presentations, document review, and other uses at that level of processor demand, I've been tossing around the value proposition of it versus sticking with my 2014 Air and using the iPad Air 2 for presentations when I can.

Admittedly, I do occasionally fiddle around in freeware or low-cost photo-editing programs or such (nothing at the level of PhotoShop), but nothing that my career depends on.

Any suggestions or comments (I'd be looking at the fully spec'ed out model, just because that's what I do...)? Would you think it's worth taking a look, or waiting for Skylake? I'm in no hurry, as all my needs are met right now - it would be a geek-want purchase that would make one of my kids happy, since they would inherit a 2014 Air...

It is a spontaneous, nerd inside of me, purchase myself. I have a brand new retina pro. I will never need the power this thing offers, so it makes sense for me to "downgrade." I also like having the latest in terms of looks/changes. The new keyboard is something I want to start adjusting to. It makes me wonder if the new standalone keyboard may adopt that look/feel.

This MacBook is going to be near perfect in ~4 years when it's fast, has two USBc ports (one either side), is priced at $999 or less, comes in a 14" version with an SD card slot and has ~18 hours battery life. Yes, I'm aware you can always say this about a tech product, but this will be when I take the plunge on this machine, or sooner if it reaches those goals.

I suspect that next year's retina MB model will be the true replacement for the MBA, which most likely will be discontinued at that point. I think there's a good chance we'll also get a 14" retina MB as well. The 2016 retina MB will probably have a 2nd USB-C port and 720p webcam in addition to the significant performance improvement that Skylake will bring. Maybe a $200 price reduction.

This is what Apple's first Axx powered Mac is going to look like.

Yeah, with a lean SoC, and interfaces hanging off the USB-C port. Like Martin said, it's "even faster than the iPad Air 2" - this time round. But two years from now? No doubt the Axx compilation of OSx is already written, shadowing every final point release. Apple are past masters at this stuff.

Ah, finally someone with valid points.

The only question I'd have for you, and myself as I don't know, not sure anyone does yet, when the rMB starts to heat throttle, how fast is it compared to the 11in Air then? I would worry that even though I'm told a 1.1Ghz CPU I'd be stuck at 500MHz as its throttled most of the time I need it. Sure we may not be talking about a long time, maybe 2min to compile instead of 45-60 seconds, but if I am going to drop money on a machine I want to make sure that I am also able to fully utilize it even if I am fine with its drawbacks.

And yes the larger 13.3in Lenovo Yoga 3 with the Core M under a benchmark will throttle down to 0.5GHz. It even has a fan.

The reviews I've read seem to suggest the Yoga is a compromised design. The Asus doesn't seem to have the same issue.

I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if it throttles below the base clock outside of idle power saving. I guess we'll see. My 1.2 arrives Wednesday.

It's more than noticeable. I'm not talking about putting them on a scale. I'm talking about picking them up and feeling them. One after another. The air feels like a tank after picking the air up.

A tank compared to what? A smaller tank? A .35 lb smaller tank?

At the end of the day we are talking about 5.6oz. That's it, no more, no less. It's not nothing, but it's not a huge difference either.

Also, what exactly does "more than noticeable" mean? Either you notice the difference, or you don't. I'm not sure how you can do more than notice.

lol, the future of this device isn't more ports. It's no ports.

HAHAHA! This is SO WRONG!

The future is dongles.

I'm just playing.

As long as the necessary ports stay in my 27in iMac I don't mind them removing ports on these browsing machines.

iCloud needs to work a little more like dropbox first though.

And AirDrop needs to work 100% of the time.

They'll get there

So the overclocked chip *almost* matches an outdated i5 chip? Sign me up!

Seriously, I do think it's impressive that Intel is getting so much out of so little. What I don't get is why people are trying to make this machine sound more powerful than it is. It's not powerful, and that's OKAY for folks who don't need a powerful machine. There are lots of folks who have good justifications for buying this machine. There's no need to oversell it.

This would be nice. I hope you're right.

I'd wait for Skylake. I suspect this line will go the same way the MBA line went - with the subsequent generations getting more powerful and less expensive. (Unless, of course, you want to make 2 of your kids happy, and give one the 2014 Air and then next year pass down the MB in favor of the Skylake version) :D

Just because it does what you want doesn’t mean it’s good, (or bad), value. It just means you’re prepared to pay the asking price.
Isn't that the definition of "good value"? You value it more than the money.

1.2 Ghz? What a joke. My 2001 Pentium IV was almost twice as fast at 2 Ghz.

Congratulations on knowing nothing about how processors works.

No it isn't. It's marginally faster, has a fan, has massive bezels and a crap screen. Oh yeah, and it's heavier.

The new MacBook is infinitely better. Go to an Apple store and try both out and see how you feel.

By time Apple has those specs, you'll want it faster, more ports, priced at $699 or less, and comes in a holographic display with 7 days battery life.
