I desire to own my phone as long as possible (yet retain a high level of performance. I wouldn't use a device with 1GB of ram with iOS 11) - my next purchase from Apple will be a phone that has the diagonal size of a 4.7 iPhone (or the X, if its a screen encompassing device), 3GB of memory, with a retail price of $700 or lower. I'm not interested in a Plus size device.

Performance is a feature, and based on my experience with iOS, I'm primarily memory bound (not so much CPU bound). For me, performance comes before OIS, OLED, etc.

Performance (time to unlock, time to open camera app, time to open e-mail application) is why I chose iOS over Android. It defines each action I have with the iPhone. But this performance lead has become increasingly smaller the last two years (citation -

Ming Kuo is a regular here on Macrumors. At least his predictions are some of most accurate. (I did mention his name one more time inadvertently).

That's also cause he gets some of his rumours straight from "captain obvious " - greatly improves his accuracy recently . There was a time he did drop some great rumours , these days he is just part of the regular news, and very safe "rumours"

My point is that MacRumours is naive in letting itself be used by Ming-Chi Kuo in order to further his own agenda. He's running a business. When Ming-Chi Kuo sneezes, investors shuffle a lot of money around. MacRumours facilitate this. Is MacRumours getting kickbacks from Ming-Chi Kuo's company?

Still don't get your point. You say his reports are very important to the market rumor mill, so MacRumors shouldn't discuss it? What sense does that make? It's not like Wall Street hangs on every word posted on MacRumors. If they did, they'd have completely divested of Apple long ago.

What factual basis do you have for saying that MR is "letting itself be used"? First, Kuo is one of the more accurate analyst/rumor-mongers, and this is a rumors site. Making a point of minimizing or excluding Kuo would be irresponsible.

Second, you have this completely backwards. Kuo doesn't need to get anything from MR. MR probably can't offering Kuo anything of value anyway. But MR gets substantial value out of reporting Kuo's guesses and analysis: it helps drive site traffic, which drives advertising revenue, which makes a forum like this possible.

I don't see the point of them even adding this, on the rear. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe in the future (3-4 years off), but why within the next 2?

People probably have insecurity issues that their recent iPhone x purchased will feel outdated soon with a new phone coming out next year

I suspect 2018 will just be an X refinement. Add true motion, better camera, more colours and call it a day. You’ll also get the 8 line, now the 9 line, as the budget line.

2019 release is ready fir a new cycle, which should bring a larger phablet, pencil support and possible face id refinement. Really can’t see them releasing a bigger phone next year despite other claiming/thinking they will.

To Apple, its always about holding back. Get people to buy the latest shiny change before they get bored and want something different, like a new size or face id revision.

2019 and 2020 cycle will be the next phones worth getting if you want all bugs and features upgraded. 2018 will feature minor upgrades and possibly lower price to ride this current bandwagon through.

The budget line in 2020/21 will feature the original X shape and firm factor.

Also fits in nicely with current buyers seeing a 2 year cycle... ;)

Well there are rumors, then there is "through enough **** at a wall, some of it will stick". He is wrong almost as often as he is right. What makes his beliefs any more plausible than some random poster on this forum?

He incorrectly guessed the iPX colours at launch, the usable screen size and layout (5.15" usable on 5.8"), the battery capacity being greater than the iP7 Plus. There is no doubt that he gets some things right, but it is becoming an almost every day occurrence where there is a story to do with what he has predicted and there is little to no accountability it seems for when he gets it wrong, only "but he's the best, look at what he has predicted".

Who really cares at the moment what the next iPhone will have when the price is around $1000 maybe Apple needs to consider lowering the price for iPhone X if they want people to move away from iPhone 8 or people slowly will move to Samsung, Android or Google phone.

The point wouldn't be Face ID (other than identifying the people you meet), it's 3-D sensing for AR. The better the depth perception, the more convincing the integration of computer-generated objects into a 3-D environment.

There are some impressive AR apps already in circulation, so Apple has a motive to have as many iPhones supporting the capability as possible.

The thing is, I don't think the combination of dot projector and 2-D camera (which is what we have with Face ID) is as effective on the back camera, for the same reason that a camera flash becomes useless when the subject matter is too far from the camera - the light spreads out and dims over distance. I think old-fashioned stereoscopic cameras will be more useful - it's likely easier to extract depth/position info by comparing the images from two lenses (the principle behind human depth perception) than it is to infer that depth from a single, 2-D image.

So, my prediction is that we'll see dual-lens back cameras (or more) on every new iPhone model going forward.

One more mention of this Ming-Chi Kuo, and I will stop visiting MacRumours... sigh.

Do you really expect Macrumors to sit on their hands while all the other tech sites report on his often-accurate reports? Are there significantly more reliable sources you prefer? Do you not like rumors in general even if they’re often accurate (in which case I’m not sure why you’re on this site)? Trying to understand your reasoning.

It makes no sense to put that expensive piece of hardware on the back of the phone.
Use cases are limited. That is, being able to pick up the phone while laying face down and have it awake when you turn it over. How much are you willing to pay for that?

Sheesh! We haven't even gotten the first phone yet and this guy is already saying there won't be any new features or improvements to the True Depth Camera.

Looking forward to the day when Ming goes away. :apple:
I'm not. I think he's fun to complain about.

If they want to be taken seriously, MacRumours need to start reporting more Facts, less Rumours.
