Recently I replaced my aging iPad Mini 4 with a 64 GB Space Gray Mini 5 and for the most part it’s been a superb upgrade—I love the performance jump, the familiar design (which I already liked anyway), and the more advanced display, with which I have personally had no issues.

Unfortunately there are a couple of pretty bothersome issues I’ve been experiencing on this new device, primarily one in which the iPad doesn’t seem to register that it’s connected to a power source until the Lightning cable is unplugged and re-connected multiple times.

Last night, for example, I plugged the included adapter and cable into the Mini to charge and when I awoke this morning I was miffed to find that no charging whatsoever had taken place overnight although everything was connected properly (and before anyone asks, yes: the outlet into which the adapter was plugged as well as the adapter itself do work—I use them to charge my iPhone without issue).

The other more minor issue is that at times “phantom” taps and touches appear to register on the display both connected to and away from charging, but nothing of significance seems to happen as a consequence.

I’m not sure whether these issues occur at the hardware or at the software level, but since I did purchase AppleCare with the iPad I will probably have it replaced unless somehow they happen to be addressed through iOS updates.

Has anyone else been experiencing these or any other issues with their new Mini(s)? Let me know.

Sounds like you need a replacement. Mine recharges with ease. No issues like you describe

I have. I’m a first time Mini owner, though I have had a lightening connector device before (iPhone 5s) and never had such an issue with that.

I got the Mini on the Wednesday and if I recall, first had the issue on the Friday. I did find it awkward getting the cable into the port before that. I ended up eventually getting the Mini to charge via my old iPhone cable, after checking for any signs of a loose connection and/or the charger itself coming apart. However, the iPad cable charged my iPhone and gave me no issues connecting the iPad to my laptop on a few occasions, so I couldn’t exactly take the cable back, even if attempts I’ve made at iPad lead + wall charger since have been fruitless.

In addition to the iPad seeming to ‘like’ my old cable more, my current theory is that the cable isn’t in fact reversible with the Mini. Turning the cable over once seems to solve the issue on those occasions that I have a problem, though the iPad takes a moment to start charging once connected, unlike my old iPad 3.

It is reversible on all three cables I have.

My guess is both of you have defective ports on the mini.

I have silver model do you both have gray model?

Thank you for the responses—that helps clarify some of my feelings. I’ll be moving soon and will most likely have the device replaced once I’m out there.

I’m not in easy reach of an Apple Store so also won’t be seeking a replacement straight away. I’m outside of the returns window so I don’t think I’m losing anything by not making the trip especially. It would also give time to test the theory of less magenta in a while.

No, no third party components.

Since posting, I’m glad to report that I’ve had no further issues. I’m now wondering if it may have had something to do with the cases I was using, as the first was a universal that made it awkward to get the cable in at all, and the case I have now is a Mini 4 one. At times, the plastic holding in the bottom of the iPad (best way I can think of describing it) seemed very close to the top of the charging port. It might have been that that was getting in between the connector and the port slightly when the case was newer.
