Well, you may not think that using THIS size (even if it were as light and thin as iPad Air) in public is hilarious, but most people will, and most people are conscious about not looking laughable in public and not drawing funny looks.

But frankly iPad Airs aren't as big as that in the picture. So where were you leading with that?
 
I'm trying to decide between the two but pocketability is definitely not a factor. I live in Australia so I don't tend to wear big coats that can fit iPads, the idea of wearing an tablet on the body like a phone seems pretty far fetched actually.

For me it's more about the portability of being able to easily hold a device for reading and still be able to be productive. I like the mini as it's easy to hold, less conspicuous and easier to type in portrait. I like the air as it's easier to use on a desk at work, text is easier to read on websites/magazines and the screen is higher quality. They are the factors I'm using to decide.
