Considering your use of "telly", I'm guessing you live in a PAL country, and the computer is trying to output NTSC signal. There should be a way to change that, but I don't know what it is.

Mini DisplayPort to DVI + DVI to VGA = Mini DisplayPort to VGA?

Title says it all. If you use a new MacBook Pro with the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, and then an older DVI to VGA adapter (from a PowerBook or older MBP), will it work with a VGA display?

I ask because I will probably use a DVI display with my new MBP in future, but for now I'm still all VGA, and I already have a DVI-VGA adapter from my old machine.

Has anyone tried this?

No, per above (I merged you into this thread; please forum search). Incidentally, this didn't even work with the Apple adapters before the MDP. The Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter for instance didn't carry an analog signal (so it didn't work with a DVI->VGA adapter), etc.

I have just bought a mini dvi to video adapter for my mac and plugged it into my telly via the yellow cable but the screen is just coming up with black fuzzy lines, am I doing something wrong?

What adaptor are you talking about? Can you find a link to it?

This is unbelievable!! Really?? I was already disappointed with Apple for trying to nickel-and-dime us with the adapter; but to find out that it won't work with the previous adapters...so we now have to buy multiple adapters...ARGHHH!!!

I will have to buy THREE, at a total of $160. MDP->DVI, MDP->VGA, and MDP to Dual-link DVI ($100) to run a 30 inch monitor. For my previous MBP I just needed a DVI->VGA, as the built-in DVI was Dual-DVI capable. What a rip-off. And I'll have to wait another month for the latter cable to even be available. Am seriously considering ditching Apple for this and sending the thing back (it has enough flaws so I'd get a full refund, I'm just holding off because I need a computer).

Most surprising that no other company has seen the niche and come up with cheaper adapters...
