or a hardware issue, if apple haven't wired the soundcard output to the port, I don't think anyone actually knows?

I guess when Monoprice releases the Mini Diplay to HDMI adapter on 3/30 we will know for sure. :) This would make life much easier for when I want to hook it up to my TV.

[...]EDIT: Mistake. Mini DispayPort does, current cables don't allow it. So not really a software issue, more of a cable issue?
Unless the cables are missing wires, then they would support audio.

No one (other than Apple) knows if they have the ability to route audio through the mini-DisplayPort. It's possible that it could be done with a firmware update. Or it's possible that only a hardware update would allow it.

Seems like the easiest way to test it. I would be willing to bet that audio will not work.

there is no MDP to HDMI yet Monoprice will be releasing one soon hopefully but no the That adapter wont send audio signal thru just video you will have to get the sound from the audio output.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that MDP has audio, and presumably if it did Apple would have told us. Stop hoping.

a) no one knows yet, because an adaptor isn't available yet (oh but wait, we do! see b))

b) no. no it doesn't work. it's pretty freakin' obvious

c) buy a damn optical cable

d) that's a lot of question marks

e) that's a lot of capital letters

f) STOP YELLING AT ME

ummm....

The new Apple LED Cinema displays have speakers. Audio is carried through the mini display port to these speakers, I believe. (Don't have one to test it out).

The audio is carried through a separate USB cable.

Its a fact dat DP carries audio (check the wiki for example)

But we dont know if the 9400 or 9600 actually puts an audio signal on the cables.

Fact is that the cinema display carries the audio over USB, this could also be because they want the display to be more compatible with other stuff.

I'm using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter then a DVI to HDMI cable.

im using the exact same thing,

Why do you NOW believe it's a mistake? DANGGUMMIT!!!!!! DOES ANYONE KNOW POSITIVELY??????? DAMN YOU APPLE FOR CONFUSING THE **** OUT OF EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

DisplayPort supports audio. Mini-DisplayPort supports audio. Any cables manufactured to the spec will support audio. The only question is if Apple routes audio through the video port. They haven't said one way or the other. Once the MDP->HDMI cable is available, we will have our answer (although if it doesn't work, we still won't know if it could work at some time in the future).

Just placed my order!

Got myself the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable, a Mini-TOSLINK to TOSLINK optical audio cable, an HDMI cable and the MDP to VGA cable for good measure :D

Now I'll be able to watch the HD content on my MacBook on the big screen! ;)

See now that we know the minidisplayport to hdmi adapter on the macbook doesn't do audio... isn't it pretty useless?
I mean think about it.. we waited for that hdmi adapter hoping that we can have both video and audio all through one cable. Since it only does video.. it's the same as getting a dvi adapter. In fact.. it's almost better to just get the mdp to dvi adapter ...
wow no point in getting that hdmi adapter..

btw
does anyone know if monoprice's mdp->dvi adapter is dvi-i , dvi-a, or dvi-d ?
i wish gizmodo reviewed that adapter. Thing is apple's dvi adapter is dvi-d..

man.. mini displayport is causing alot of confusion..
