i know this tip won't apply to everyone, but when i installed my own CD player in my car (a cheap kenwood one), i specifically chose one i could do an external input. i just paid a little extra for an adapter to allow the CD player to accept the regular stereo plugs (white/red) -> mini-jack cable.

i originally intended to use mini-disc walkman with it, but of course, it works with iPod as well.

if you are in the market to replace your CD player in your car, you may want to consider getting one with an ext. input...

otherwise, i think using the classic mini-jack -> tape player module works fine and is dirt cheap, i think.

get the 15 GB!! $50 to have all of your music plus a ton of extra space for back up?? And you would consider the mini ipod *why*??

Oh man, I hate those new little things so much. They are soooo ugly. I still think the original scroll wheel ipods were the best, but the 3rd gen. ipods are fine - whereas the mini ipods are horrible. The pointy corners, the strangely proportioned body, the terrible color choices (and no white option??? wtf??)... yikes. I thought apple was past the rainbow-sprinkles approach.

This isn't even close. You'd have to be insane to buy the mini ipod over the 15 GB.

cables..money

what kind of cables do i need to hook up my ipod to my car reciever? thank you everyone for your help. Its great :)

When I first heard about the iPod Mini, and noticed the price was not much less than the 15 GB iPod, it seemed to me that the real advantage the Mini has over the original is size.

It seems to me the reason to buy the Mini is if you really want a smaller iPod.

But then I looked at this:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html

The original iPods: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.62
The new iPod Mini: 3.6 x 2.0 x 0.5

So yes, the new iPod Mini is smaller, but it doesn't seem that significantly smaller. Perhaps I need to hold one to be convinced.

What do people think? Does this size seem significantly smaller?

I just calculated the volume:
Original: 6.108 cubic inches
Mini: 3.6 cubic inches (41% smaller)

And the area of the face of the device:
Original: 9.84 square inches
Mini: 7.2 square inches (27% smaller)

So noticing the volume is 41% smaller does seem like a significant difference.

The weight is also 2oz ligther. 36% lighter.

So... I dunno.

=)

I think when I finally buy an iPod it'll have to be the biggest one I can find. But at this point I don't think I'd use the iPod enough to justify the cost.

Most of the time I have my Powerbook near by so I might as well just use my Powerbook.

When Steve held one in his hand, it seemed pretty small and he said that the size is about even with the size of a business card, so it is definitely a good deal smaller, not a huge difference, but one that can be noticed.

I'm torn with the new iPod minis. I think they look really neat, I think they're a great idea, and I think they're really cool, but for only $50 more, you can have a 15 GB! Yet, Apple has once again enticed customers with the whole "cool" factor.

In the end, I'm still going to buy a 40 GB, as I need the space, but I think in general, Apple will succeed with the iPod mini - it addresses another market segment, and maybe people who want a smaller player, with smaller capacity will not even care that the 15 GB is only $50 more - they want a smaller player with smaller capacity, and the iPod mini will be perfect for them. Plus, maybe they just want a colorful MP3 player.

It's perfect for me, I refused to get a $500 iPod with 40 gigs of space when I just barely have a gig of music in iTunes. 4 gigs is perfect, and so is the size. I don't care much for the colors, but the silver aluminum case is looking pretty nice to me. Sure, the 15 gig may be just a little more, but I personally am not a fan of white and I don't need 15 gigs.

I dunno, I still like the design of the Original iPod, but I like it how the iPod Mini is completely made out of anodized aluminium. It's also better for wear as well.

If you've ever experienced Bang & Olufsen stuff then you'll know how this will feel in your hand. Unlike the iPod, you won't see any smudges come up on this baby, it will always keep it's matte finish.

But even though IMO it's built better than the iPod, I still can't get over the price (us Australians will have to pay some more for freight) so I'll stick with buying 15Gb no doubt about it.

it depends on what you use the ipod for. If you know you will ONLY use it for digital music - and you can get your songs down to 4GB (come on, that is a TON of music) - the mini is just fine.

If you want it to take files with you, or EVERY song you own, get the 15GB.

alright ive decided, i need all my music with me, i dont want to just have some of it, because then im gonna want the stuff i dont have with me. Time to accessorize, I need to plug this into my car receiver.. should i get a iTrip, or what cables do i need to get to hook up to aux. Also what is a good clear case, i want to protect from scratches but i want to be able to see the beauty of the ipod, plus i need it to have a clip preferabley. Any help would be great!

I would go for the 20 GB because it comes with a dock and a case (mind you not see through) for the extra little bit of money.

It is a beaut though. Got one for christmas.. only had seen one from afar... not bulky at all... it lights up so nice!

Mini is truly @#$%! Who in the world would think its a better value then 15Gb ipod? Geez. Some apple decisions feel like hitting urself with a bat on a head.
And look at the details! mini looks so much cheaper.. with plastic buttons etc....

It looks like the buttons are the same as on the original iPod, so I don't see how it'd be cheaper in design, not to mention the cases are made out of aluminum, which is really nice. I love the look of the aluminum of my PowerBook and I bet the mini iPod looks just as nice. As far as the space issue, I literally have no need of 15 gigs of space, that is why I held off on buying an iPod in the first place, since it would all go to waste.

Mini iPods let down!!

This is a no brainer, 11 extra gigs for $50!! I mean the mini's aren't that much smaller. The standard iPod is a perfect size for me. Just my 2 cents. Use the extra space on the iPod as a external hard drive. There is always room for more space.

15

i went ahead and bought the 15 gig, with monster cable to hook to my receiver, a clip, and the new headphones, hopefully they wont fall out like the old ones. I feel reall good about it. Still wish the 15 was designed like the 4, maybe in a year or 2. :)

Hey all, i already posted this but...

This seems to be a appropriate forum.

I will trade a almost never used 30 gig ipod, with dock, and a 3rd party nicer case and cable, and the remote for a new silver mini with dock.

Someone could make a killing off of that, I'm sure. Just buy a mini with discount for $230, trade with you, then sell the 30 gig on eBay and buy another mini and keep the rest. Unfortunately, though, you'll have to wait a while since the mini isn't shipping until the middle of next month.

It seems that Apple likes this solid aluminum design, the powerbooks and now the new ipod mini. I think it would be a great design for the full size ipods and wouldn't be suprised at all if the next generation is designed as such.

!!! wow. That's quite an offer.

though i haven't seen the mini pod yet, i expect that it will feel quite small...

when devices are that small already, ~40% drop in the volume will make a HUGE difference.

remember how rounded edges made the 3G iPod look much "smaller" and "smoother" even though it wasn't really much smaller than the 1/2G iPods? if you are used to smaller 3G iPod - like 10/15 GB - the slightly "thicker" 40 GB one feels quite a bit bigger too...

so i think mini iPod will feel incredibly tiny when held in our hands. i doubt i'll buy it but i would definitely consider it if i didn't have 15 GB of music...

It just occured to me how the iPod is opposite now in design from the laptops. The high end Powerbook is anodized aluminum, while the smaller, scaled down iBook is white. and for ipods, vice versa. Apple should have thought ahead and reversed the ipod designs.

oh well.. i'm sure when they developed that 5gig 3 years ago, they had no idea it would be as big as it has.

I don't have an iPod, but have wanted one since the origanal came out. Hopefully I'll win enough at poker over the next few months to invest in one. Here's my thought on the mini vs. reglar.

First, how often do I truly need my entire collection at hand? I personally own around 600 cds, I'm not sure all of that would fit into teh 40gig iPod anyway. Plus, that collection grows, so I don't think i really need to have all of my music in pocket all of the time. 4-20 gb of it would be cool though.

Questions:
How easy is it to constantly add/delete tunes from the iPod? Can you delete on the fly, or does it need to be connected to a computer?

It seems to me that the minipod would be very cool(fit in your shirt pocket cool). If it is really easy to just dump what I feel like that week onto it, then mini is big enough. My iBook will have the larger collection on it's 60gb drive. Either way, when i buy, i will get the griffin iTalk so that i can use my sony mic to record concerts at music school. wonder how much real-time recording can fit onto a minipod??

For me, I would most likely just get the 15 GB or 20 GB iPod. However, I am the type of person who stands in the supermarket and compares price per oz. on the items I buy.

I have yet to get an iPod, but I would like to soon. To me, the appeal of the iPod is having the ability to take it all with me. However, the price is a little steep for me at the current time. So, the appeal of the possibility of a mini iPod was a smaller space at a lower price (I could handle transfering music back and forth to save a good chunk of change). However, the price difference is not enough for me to justify its purchase. Yes, I am disappointed, but I am not going to whine and moan about it. I did not design the thing, and I do not know how much it cost to make.

Anyway, I am slightly biased towards the original iPod...I have and iBook and my first response to the mini iPod was "where's the white one?" The other's are cute, but not for me.
