Much cooler in person

I just got back from the show last night and I have to say the pictures DO NOT do this device justice.

Actually looking at one and holding it in your hand will be enough to sway many of the people complaining about the price. Trust me on this. Same with the size. I know it doesn't look any smaller in the photos, but when you hold this thing it is very noticeable.

The colors look way cooler in person too.

A lot of the disappointment voiced here will vanish once people see these up close

Reminds me of the G5s and the aluminum PowerBooks. People complained the PowerBooks didn't look rounded enough and the G5s looked like ugly cheesegraters, but once you see them in person, they are just so wonderfully designed and beautiful to look at.

ok, i guess i change my offer

400 dollars for a 30 gig ipod with all the accesories, plus a nice padded case. AND... ive decided to throw in the worlds smallest cell phone. the Panasonic GD55, it is yet another electronic i never use.

the ipod was bought in august, and it has never left its dock. ive literally never used it. it just sits there.
ok lemme know,

How come you've never used your iPod? And wow, how can you even use that cell phone? The only reason why I got the Samsung that I got was because it was reasonably big enough to use so it doesn't feel awkward to use. It reminds me of Amy's cell phone from Futurama. :p "What's wrong, Amy, did you swallow your cell phone again?"

$$ for Size!

The iPod mini is $249 because it is very small and light! 31% of mp3 customers paid a lot of $$ for small size when they could have spent the same amount for something that has over 10X the space. Size is very important to a lot of people. $50 for 10 extra GB that they will not use is $50 that could be spent elsewhere. Remember this site sometimes isn't the best place for recommendations because most of the posters are power users and more is always better. I would go to an Apple Store or somewhere where you can pick up the mini and play with it. A business card is really small. If you haven't done it, get a business card. You will be surprised at how much smaller it is than the iPod.

iPod song deletion.

Deleting songs from the iPod requires that you connect to a computer and from what I have used it appears that the only easy way to get song off of iPod is to delete it from iTunes player. That is a real pain in the butt. Go big with the iPod, even the 40 gig still fits in your shirt pocket. That is where I keep mine. Good luck they are all awesome machines.

If you set the iPod to manual you can drag songs off of the iPod as if it were a playlist. This way you don't have to remove the song from your library for the iPod to remove it also.

This is correct, I have to do everything manually with my iPod as well. Having over 100 GB of MP3s on my machine, well, I don't think setting my 40 GB iPod to auto download, etc. everything would be a good idea.

How many songs does 100 gigs equal? That's an insanely large collection. Were you the guy Steve was referring to who spent nearly $30,000 on the iTunes music store? :p

Heh heh - no, I haven't spent that much on iTunes - I'm in Canada, so I haven't spent anything at ITMS yet! ;)

As for my collection, I record the 2-hour BBC Radio One Essential Mix every week and encode it to MP3. Each show it about 170 MB, and I have all of the mixes since 1993, so, well, you can do the math. Besides that, I have a ton of albums, all of my audio CDs, and miscellaneous other MP3s on my server box. If I imported everything into iTunes, I'd predict my whole collection is about 140-150 GB.

Yah I know I'm a freak.

Exactly what I was thinking. Just got back from the expo today. The mini wins hands down over the ipod.

quick question about the normal ipods, how are they for excercising?? Like i lift and run and everything, will i be able to clip it on my shorts, or will it be too heavy. That is a big buying point for me.

I've used mine while jogging and while bouldering. I wouldn't put it in jogging shorts, because it will bang against your leg, but I've used a vest, a shirt with pockets, an extra chalk bag with belt, and now a Marware case with the arm strap and all have worked very well. The iPod can take some shifting and banging, but if you can find a place that doesn't take much shock, your upper body for example, it will be fine.

As for the mini-iPod and its pricing, I only ask this:
How much was a 5GB Mac only iPod the day it was announced? Guess what, it was more than $249. Smaller = more expensive. New technology (ie the smaller drive) = more expensive. Give it six months to a year and the mini will be in the sweet spot.
For now if you really like the little one, go for it, but the 15GB is the best value because it is only slightly bigger, comes with the dock, and has more than 3x the capacity. It would have behoved Apple to hit around $200, but I have absolutely no idea how much it costs to make one of the minis right now. And neither does anyone else around here.

i agree, $200 would have been a nice middle of the ground price for the mini, but those parts still haven't come down in price like the large, computer hard drives. i'm HOPING the mini doesn't end up w/ the same fate as the Cube: too small for the high-end user & too pricey for the entry-level user.

the new design IS pretty sweet, i'm looking fwd to holding one, but i'll never buy one b/c i'm at 18GB of music & growing. that's why my advice for 6914708 would be like most of the rest here, go 15GB. even IF you delete out enough music to squeeze onto a mini today, what are you going to do next month when you go to cash in all those Pepsi iTMS downloads? it would be a pain in the ass to keep trying to decide what gets dropped every few weeks. trust me, i'm down to about 400MB left on my 20GB and i'm weeding through my music to get rid of stuff i don't listen to much.

it's a bummer, though. i feel for you wanting the cool new design, but if you're dropping $$$ on the thing, look long term...

In defense of the price of the new mini, I just bought a 2.2 GB microdrive for my camera, and shelled out close to $200 for that. I know that these things cost much less in volume, but just some food for thought, the drives that these things use are pretty friggin expensive, plus there's all the other parts that cost too (case, lcd, backlight, circut board, etc...), which can rack up the price quickly.

One thing that could probably appease a lot of people is including the dock or even the arm band with it. I'm sure those docks are pretty cheap for Apple to throw in since they control them and probably have the ability to make as many as they need for next to nothing, so including one with each mini would be a minimal added cost that could make people believe they are getting a better deal with their iPod mini purchase. But either way, I want to get one. I am simply nowhere close to 4 gigs in my music collection and my school has really anal firewalls that block any way of me downloading content so it's rare that I am even able to build on my collection besides importing CDs.

When you have control over something, and I mean monopoly control, you'll want to squeeze every last penny a consumer's willing to spend on a product. So if a consumer wants the new mini dock, he/she will have to shell out for it. Job's not gonna throw it in just so more people will buy it. He knows people are gonna buy it, period. Just as I know I'll get one of the mini iPods. Damn you Jobs. Damn you to hell for making me spend more money.

That's what Jobs does though - gotta love him and gotta hate him for it! He's done it to me before as well... ;)
