This is why they're waiting for tandem OLED, and not just the first generation some like Dell are releasing but one that gets equally bright to miniLED

I do not expect it to be a problem during a very long product life.
Damn well let’s hope it’s good and has no bad effects including the battery…
 
My M1 iPad Pro 12.9" screen is LOVELY still.

No burn-in, no nothing. And noticeably better than my MBA M2.
I'm guessing you don't routinely leave your tablet on for hours a day with a bright static element on the screen. I'll let other people test out the OLED screen in laptop usage, which is very different from phone or tablet usage, and see what that burn-in looks like in a couple years, before I consider splurging on one myself.
 
Good. I don't want to have to deal with all the maintenance that comes with OLED. If you want to avoid OLED burn-in of bright static elements on your screen (because you have some crazy use case like, I don't know, running MacOS with the menubar visible), then you have to use dark mode, you have to operate the screen as dim as you can stand, you have to make sure it's turned off when you step away, and you should be doing pixel refreshes ideally every four hours. Not worth it for marginally blacker blacks, IMHO. Also, mini-LED has more comfortably readable text, and I am known to read text on my laptop screen.
Apple is likely to use the Tandem OLED tech that they have had on the iPad Pro since the M4 model. That has not been prone to burn-in. The tandem uses two layers of OLED emitters, each using half the power for the same brightness. Burn-in comes from pushing high power to emitters to get bright screen. The burn-in increase exponentially with the power. By splitting the panel into two layers, they can keep each emitter in a safer power range.

Yes, I understand this reduces the effect of burn-in. But it does not eliminate the problem. Burn-in is a fundamental part of how OLED technology works, it's just a matter of degree. I'm not sold on the idea of an OLED screen for a device where I intend to keep it for many years and I anticipate displaying bright static elements for extended periods of time every day. I'll let other people be the beta testers for that.

Ive been using it for more than two years on an iPad with Magic Keyboard acting much like a laptop. No screen problems.
 
Mini-LED screens have their own issues (like blooming) that OLED doesn't.
Every now and then I look closely at my 16 inch M1 Macbook Pro's display, from about 4 to 5 inches away, to try to see blooming, especially around white text on a black background, but it's so minimal that you could miss it if you weren't aware that it's there. I can't see it when viewing the display further back than that.
 
It could just be that Apple takes a similarly long time to change out the body style of the base M-series 14-inch MacBook Pro just like it did to transition the two-port TouchBar 13-inch MacBook Pro to the current 14-inch chassis.

I don't use my laptop outside in the sun. I doubt most people do. Regardless, it's not more expensive...take a look at all the sub-$1000 Windows laptops with OLED then tell me why Apple would probably charge north of $1500 for an OLED laptop?

So many people here who have never, ever owned an OLED laptop seemingly have an opinion on it without never having used one for any period of time needed to cause the issues they think will happen! ASUS, for example, puts up a OLED CARE screen saver after 30 minutes of idle, and Windows lets you hide the taskbar. If Apple were smart, they'd let you hide the menu bar and the taskbar.

I feel people are inventing reasons to diss an OLED when in fact, you can't beat a 3K or 4K 120Hz OLED panel in a laptop for cheap (in Windows).

Every screen technology will "burn in" if you leave static elements on the screen long enough. Nothing is immune, even IPS and I have a laptop with IPS that will prove that. You think leaving bright static elements on a MacBook for years won't cause issues?

And I look at my OLED screens on my laptops and don't see burn-in. People here read something and believe it. OLED panels have technology to greatly reduce burn-in as does the OS (Windows, at least). All I know is, every hi-res OLED panel I've used looks better than the screen in my MBP 16 M1. Compared to Android phones with OLED, my iPhone 17 Pro Max doesn't even look like OLED. Not sure what Apple does to OLED but other devices look better.

You shouldn’t have to do that.

I have an ASUS Vivobook with a 15” OLED display. HDR is overrated in my opinion, and I dislike the OLED display compared to my iPad 11, which is really excellent.
Not sure what model ASUS you bought (maybe a cheap one since it's a Vivobook), but I've had about 4 different ASUS laptops with OLED including Zenbook S16 and now a Zenbook A16 and the displays are gorgeous. I don't do HDR because I don't watch movies on my laptop -- I have lots of TV's for that.

I prefer OLED too, but I can hold out until they've been in Macbooks for about a year or so. But as you say, people foretelling burn-in doom if Apple puts OLED displays in Macbooks are remembering the situation from years ago, without somehow taking into account that OLED displays in laptops and tablets for the past four to five years have contained newer technologies that have essentially eliminated burnin for nearly everyone, except possibly for displays that are on 24 hours a day, for thousands of hours, displaying elements that don't change much or at all, which isn't the use case for very many people.

Apple has a different color calibration philosophy that favors accuracy in color and saturation, to try to match that of the creator of an image or video, and it’s true that the result can be somewhat flat compared to an Android phone. iPhones don’t have the Android “Vivid” mode, which is the default on many Androids, especially the Samsung Galaxy models, and the iPhone doesn’t have a display profile or color filter/color tint to emulate it. An Android phone’s Vivid mode is generally intentionally inaccurate to try to achieve visual impact. The best you can try to get an iPhone display to “pop” a little more is to turn off True Tone and Night Shift, and increase brightness to maximum, but these won’t do a lot to increase color saturation to the Android “Vivid” level.
