I use the iPad retina mini largely for reading pdf's. I couldn't say it's as good as an Air; sometimes I adjust the margins of a document to make a document more readable. That said, for me the portability is worth that trade-off.

So portability aside, air is better for reading PDFs ?
 
I would suggest you go to the store and look at both side by side and decide for yourself. We can't really tell you what you would prefer, for distance and size, since you don't seem to have any specific use either way, it really just comes down to your preference and only you can figure that out.
 
Had a chance to handle the mini. Very light and nice to hold.

But I decided to keep the air. There is always next year. I have wasted too much time trying to decide between the two. Now it is time to enjoy using one.
