MLB is yet another streaming content provider that doesn't "get it". They're better than the NFL about this stuff, but as a cord cutter, I look at this service as a waste of money. If I pay for MLB.TV, I want to watch the games live whether they're in my market area or not. If they would get rid of the game delays for local games, I would be all over this service.

These big companies these days just don't understand where things are moving. In ten years time, I honestly think we'll be streaming everything we watch and paying for only the content we want rather than 500 channels of stuff we don't care about.

The difference is they make A LOT of money from people who attend the game... I don't see live sporting events going anywhere.

And I wouldn't want it to. I LOVE going to Wrigley Field and seeing games. It's one of my favorite places in the whole world. It also costs an arm and a leg to take my family there, or even just for my wife and I to go to a game. It's not something we want to do more than once or twice a year.

It isn't to do with people attending games (there is decades of history of TV coverage which shows that such coverage can have a positive impact on attendances). It is because of the income that they get from TV companies who show the local games. The agreements with those companies give them exclusivity of live broadcast within the local area.

Anyone blacked out from 4 or more MLB teams? I am. Phillies, Pirates, Orioles and Nationals. Kind of ridiculous imo. Btw, I'm in central PA. Closest of those ball parks to me? Baltimore a 2:45hr drive.

I'd love to buy the MLB package but why should I? Now if they offered me a package to only see the Phillies game I'd pay for that service. Why don't they offer that and give a percentage of that income to the local tv rights holder. Then I'd get what I want and everyone would make money from me.

That's another good point--a friend of mine is a Cardinals fan, but lives in the Chicago area. They STILL black out his Cardinal games because they say that's in his broadcast area. And for some reason, Comcast and AT&T both black him out of Cardinals games on their MLB packages as well. He can't get a break from the cable companies OR MLB.TV.

Isn't it pretty common for sports packages to black out local teams? If you have the NFL Package or MLB Package through cable do they show local games (if not sold out)?

I have Dish Network and live in Columbus and they do not black out Cleveland or Cinci or Columbus Blue Jacket games, even if not sold out of tickets. These online subscriptions like MLB and NHL Center Ice DO black out local games though. I would pay up to $200 for a season to watch online if they did't ever black out my "home" team's games.

Good stuff!

But curious that the image they're showing is from a video game instead of actual baseball footage.

If they (and the other leagues! looking at you, NHL!) could do something about the blackout restrictions, it would be even better.

They certainly do understand. MLB in particular has been at the forefront of moving to IP based distribution.

But legacy contracts/commitments don't allow them to move as quickly as we'd like them to move.

It is from a game. Look at that MLB: The Show billboard on the top right of the photo of the iPad version.

----------

You must have the patience of a saint to watch an entire 3-4 hour babseball game, on your phone, over 3G.

I wouldn't be able to do that unless I was at the DMV

I'd buy it in a heartbeat if not for the blackout rules. I live four hours from my "home" team and am blacked out.

I have one word for you: "TOR"

https://www.torproject.org/

Run TOR on your computer and watch any game you want without blackout restrictions.

If you want to watch on your iPad at home, you'd have to use your computer as a proxy– but it should also work.

----------

Can the location be faked so that games won't be blacked out?

Thinking of using locationholic tweak to put my location in another state so I could watch my home team.

Has anyone been able to do this(change location so that games aren't blocked out)

Yes. Use TOR:

https://www.torproject.org/

Just to be clear– you're still paying for your MLB.tv service and using it as normal. You're just letting TOR anonymize your location by hopping around the world. The IP of the request to the service will be a different physical location that your actual location. This eliminates the blackout, because they think you're somewhere else. I think you need to keep your request IP within the United States, though.

Well I live in North Carolina. Time-Warner Cable will not work out a deal so that I can watch my Nats on MASN and the League Pass TWC offers is not worth it since games are block out. So unless they are playing the Braves I don't get to see the games. The App with Game Day Audio is all I can afford. $145 is way too expensive!

Hi,

The Video Game appearance is the standard interface you get that does not include live video feeds. I have only the audio subscription and find those graphics helpful in showing where the pitches landed in the strike zone.

I'm a huge Tigers fan. The main reason I have XM is to listen to the games. I don't have a desire to watch very many games because it monopolizes my time too much (with radio, it can be on in the background all over our house or on the patio, but with TV I have to sit and watch it).

So, I'm only interested in the radio broadcasts. Do I understand it right that, for $14.99, I can listen to all the radio broadcasts for the entire season? If so, I could cancel my home XM receiver and save a lot of money.

Is there a security risk with username and password? Encryption?

Yes, for the $14.99 annually you get all the radio broadcasts. It's even better than XM because you can choose between both the home and away broadcasts.

Thanks for verifying this. Seems like a no-brainer.

That's what I was thinking. We really like the Detroit announcers and some of the other announcing teams are downright annoying to listen to. It would be really nice not to have to hear John Sterling say things like "an A-Bomb for A-Rod" or "the Grandyman can" or “thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh Yankees win”.

I wish I could pay to watch a single game. I hate paying for a subscription, and a busy life kinda keeps me from using it.

Yes, it is very much available in the UK. I watched a lot on the Apple TV last year.

And, just to annoy a lot of people who are commenting on here, you have a choice from every single game played with no blackouts at all.

mlb.tv is the best value purchase I make every year. I usually watch 2-3 games a week all through the summer at a cost of around £1 per game. Compare that to the amount I pay Sky and ESPN to watch one game of Rugby featuring the team I support every few weeks for example.

Well believe it or not, MLB.tv is not available, according to MLB.COM:

"Thank you for your inquiry.

Regarding to your concern, apple tv is not available in UK. "

So I don't know what to do now, should I pay for it and then not able to use it?

Also a displaced Tiger fan...

I get tired of watching White Sox games on WGN... "He gone"... and "You can put it on the booooooooard!!! YES!"...

Ick.

We manage to luck out in our house... We're from Detroit, but located in Western Kentucky so we can watch all the Tiger games... But for anyone out here who are fans of the "local" teams, it really sucks... Our local blackout is for both St. Louis and Cincinnati. But, there is no cable channel here that carries most of the games for either one (like many cities have a Fox Sports <Whatever>... We do get "some" STL games, but not like FSD does in Detroit). We're just too far away from either one. Our local Fox Sports channel comes from Nashville. For local STL or CIN fans here it's really not fair to block them out.

Listened to the Tigers preseason opener yesterday, plugging my iPod Touch in where I used to have my XM receiver (eventually I'll be using Airplay to an AppleTV 3, once it's released). The sound quality was noticeably better than the XM feed.

I'm sorry for those of you having to deal with the blackouts; it really is too bad they can't be more reasonable with that. For those of us only looking for radio feeds, though, At Bat is great.

It's been a while since I've used a service like this. Back in the day, there were often problems with bandwidth-heavy usage - is that issue taken care of now? Are there for-pay alternatives that handle high bandwidth usages better?

Well, that's very odd.

I will check it later for you and report back. It was certainly working on the Apple TV last year.

I've just checked, and it seems that they are correct, at least for now.

I can log in on the Apple TV and watch archived games. However, the most recent game that is available is the final game from last years World Series. There is no mention of any games from this season (a few Spring Training games have been televised over the weekend and I watched one on my iPad).

Perhaps someone from another country could confirm that they can access this years games on the ATV. That would confirm that we don't seem to have it this year.

Luckily, I watch most games on my iPad, so I isn't a major issue for me. However it was nice to have the optin last year. I would still have subscribed anyway but it's a bit disappointing.

OK, another update.

It seems, from looking at the MLB.tv support area that Spring Training games aren't available on the ATV in any countries yet. In fact, they aren't available on many platforms as yet and the date given for the ATV is early March.

At the moment, only a handful of games are being televised anyway.

I did also note on the link below that the UK is listed as having ATV coverage. I think we will probably get it.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/help/faq_mlbtvconnecteddevices.jsp#q9

I'll keep an eye on it, and if I get access on the ATV the I'll send you a message if I remember.
