Players in Japan are lasting longer than US players. And they are throwing and playing harder. Is it the training here or how they are brought up as kids.

Plus they get a lot more rest during a 162 game season then a NFL player gets during a 16 game season.

Now add in spring training and post season and you are playing 8-9 months.

Baseball goes at a slower pace. But the players are arguably getting to fit and built up to play.

There are a few differences between MLB and pro ball in Japan. I believe they play about 140 games / season and they definitely have much less travel. Also, don't they have 6 man pitching rotations?

Why would you want to get rid of games? The amount of games aren't the problem. It's the time the game takes to be played now. Games used to be done in 2 - 2.5 hours. Now they regularly take 3-4 hours or more.

Easiest way to "fix" baseball?

15 second pitch clock.

A pitcher doesn't need to stretch, rub the ball, rub and adjust his balls, and do whatever else before throwing the next pitch. The batter doesn't need to step out of the box, take off his gloves and put them back on, spit on them, and adjust his balls between each pitch either. Just throw the damn pitch. Speeding up the game that way would do wonders.

That's ridiculous. Ball scratching takes up 14 minutes of every MLB game. :D

That's probably a conservative estimate. ;)

Seriously, the average NFL game has a little over 12 minutes of action and baseball has 14 minutes. I use the term action very loosely in describing baseball.

Hockey has 60 minutes of action (sometimes more if there are fights) in a 60 minute game... and people still wonder why I'm a hockey fan first.

Yes and they pitch on 7 days rest. But they throw 150-170 pitches a game.

They have rules to speed up the pitcher and batter but they don't enforce them.

.

Another reason for longer games is how the use of the bullpen has evolved. There are a lot more pitching changes in this era than there ever were before. Everything is just more customized. How often do you see guys pitching to 1 batter before getting removed?

I know, it's one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to baseball and why I don't watch nearly as much as I used to when I was growing up.

Taking more than a minute between pitches is just crazy.

Your view may be a bit skewed because the Red Sox have to have some of the slowest guys in the league. Abnormally slow.

Maybe. The Sox aren't the only ones though. It is weird how some teams games always tend to take longer than others.

Seems like every Sox-Yankees game ends up being at least 4 hours now.

Oh, they're definitely not the only ones. And that wasn't a dig at the Red Sox. Some of the Yankees pitchers have been excruciating to watch in between pitches as well.

Those games tend to be super long because both lineups have a history of long at-bats (working counts, taking pitches, etc..) and there are just a lot of pitching changes. Historically, they have been intense, meaningful games, so there's definitely been a lot of "over-managing".
