Edit: Now prices will go up and everybody will have to pay more, regardless of whether they use this extra service or not. Which is probably why the politicians agreed on this one, they get everybody to subsidise their higher-than-average roaming consumption, these politicians travel a lot.

Pretty sure the politicians’ phone contracts are paid for by tax money anyway. If you think the EU sets out on a multi year legislative effort to curb roaming charges within the Union just for the personal benefit, you are deluded.

I just used my 6 GB in Portugal it was great.

However some cheap 3rd party providers are already avoiding this by simply not allowing roaming on their new plans all together so your sim just does not work at all in another country. I suppose you get what you pay for

Its network specific. I'm with EE in the UK and have 40 GB of data. I'm only allowed to use 15 GB a month in roaming.
Really? I'm with EE and have 10Gb and I'm allowed to use all of it in Europe.

I'm curious as to why they have instigated a clause that stops you for example buying a cheap sim in Spain and using it in the UK. However I'm not sure how they can enforce that.

No it dosen't. You can only use the amount of data that your contract is 'worth', and the EU stated that 1 GB of data is worth approximately 7 euro

- Which means you can use around 1,5 GB of data without extra cost.

What if my contract is bundled with cable, phone, and landline internet services? My contract does not have a value per se and I really would like to know how much data I can use abroad.

Nope. Unless your telecom offers a special deal.

But not in generel.

In general you can use your entire data bundle unless your provider has stipulations. I can use my entire 50GB in the EU and several other countries (including Switzerland). The only Dutch provider with an exception is the one offering unlimited data. Where EU use is limited to 10GB a month. The comment that use is limited to the price of your data bundle (1.5GB in his example) is simply not true.

I really want another referendum on Brexit.. I'm sure the outcome would be different a second time round.
You're undoubtedly right. But that's not how it works. It's mind-blowing how 40 years of integration will now have to be untangled in under 2 years. And for what?

Yup. Considering the blatant provable lies from Leave, it should be compulsory.
I guess Americans are not too happy with their president either ;-) But that's how it goes if you believe the lies of corrupt incompetent politicians.

This is great BUT my carrier automatically charges me €10 more each month from now on even if I never will never need to use my phone outside my country.

Well, enjoy your 15GB because maybe in two years they'll even take that away as the UK is retreating on their island.

Then you should change carrier because they are not allowed to do that.

"However if a person has unlimited mobile data or very cheap mobile data at home, his operator may apply a safeguard (fair use) limit on data use while roaming. If so, the operator will have to inform the customer in advance about such a limit and alert them when they reach this limit." ..

Never had this issue. Telekom.de had this for a Years. Usually go to France or London and haven’t had to pay extra fees to use my data

At least we in the UK will get the benefit of this for 18 months or so before Brexit.....

Maybe I'm being optimistic, but I don't think there will be much of an impact. Most U.K. operators allow the 'roam like home' outside of the 27 EU countries (EE allows it in 40 countries in total with no additional charge). If they are offering it in countries outside the EU (which they are under no obligation to do), I can't see why leaving the EU would make any difference to them.

This is great news for travellers visiting Europe. I'll only have to get a prepaid SIM from any provider when I land in London and keep it till I leave Europe.
