The release of the beta of the iPhone 2.2 brought few obvious changes to the iPhone's firmware. One tweak that was noted was that Mobile Safari got a bit of a refresh, moving the Google search bar into the title bar.

In the current version of the iPhone, the Google search only appears when you tap on the address bar.

I think I prefer it the way it currently is. The new version looks crammed and either way the user still has to click in the top bar to access it.

Is that the only tweak, or is there other Safari enhancements in this beta build?

I 100% agree, this is stupid!
Focus on the stuff that matters Apple!! Google in the search bar but no copy & paste!?!?!? C'mon!

I like the current one, but the new one may grow on me, although it does look slightly crammed; I'd like the option to choose between them both.

I'm hoping 2.2 brings more stability to Safari. Right now Safari crashes on certain web sites within minutes, making my iPhone essentially useless for accessing these web sites.

I agree - crammed and ugly :(

will safari get any practical updates like the squirrelfish javascript engine?

ya, ewwww. don't do that. I do not like.

Edit:
well, after reading "nickXedge" 's comment below, I sorta have to agree with him. I jumped to a conclusion because of all the hussle and bussle at work and didn't get a chance to actually compare the two images side by side. This may in fact be a nice improvement.

:)

I'm sure they did this for the dummies who can't figure out how to search.

My question is: When you touch the URL or Google bars, do they expand? Or do they remain teeny tiny?

I think it's a good idea. That way you don't have to memorize where to tap for a Google search, it's visually indicated instead. Also more consistent with desktop Safari.

It doesn't shrink the address bar that much if you really compare it. They take away the magnifying glass and move the reload/stop-loading button inside the bar. That frees up almost the same amount of space as the new google search option. The address bar isn't the full width as it is. The real question, as previously posted, is whether or not the bar in use grows the full width. That will determine the functionality of this tweak.

tell me about it... because it's so difficult to tap the search icon to get the google field...

i'm curious if the new mobile safari will allow post data from gmail?

Jeez. Some people don't think.

When you click on the bar or the google bar it will drop down ala current iPhone allowing you to input the address into a full bar.

This increases productivity and makes things easier, which I am all for.

Increases what? It's still 2 taps.

Also, let's get some landscape for the mail app and the calendar app.

I think what they really need to do is make the bar at the bottom thinner so that it wastes less valuable screen space. It could easily be half the size without losing any functionality or ease of use.

Actually the click number doesn't change at all. If you want to do a google search hit the spy glass to the left of the address field in 1.0-2.1. The spy glass auto selects the google field.
