Focus on the stuff that matters Apple!! Google in the search bar but no copy & paste!?!?!? C'mon!

A code change like this would be made in a matter of minutes. Even if you factor in the decision process behind this, you aren't exactly talking development time hog here. Gimme a break.

How about we stop assuming that there is only one person coding the 2.2 update.

With the stellar performace of the 2.X.X packages I wouldn't be surprised if they had only one coder. The point is, why do this?? Have you heard anybody complaining about the ease of use for the address bar?? Anybody on any forum anywhere??

Everybody here seems to mis the point. This means that Mobile Safari is getting an overhaul. Since it is quite prone to crashing, this can only be an improvement I welcome.

It seems to me Apple has to be able to improve multiple things in one firmware. Push notifications will surely be one of them and we'll just have to wait and see what more is in store for us :)

I think most of us don't like it, because we have been using the old layout for over a year now. For someone who uses an iPhone for the first time, it is much simpler to figure out how to get to the search field. Not everyone immediately recognizes the magnifying glass as the button to get to the Google search field.

But what I really would like to see in Safari is the possibility to save logins/passwords à la Desktop Safari, where you can autofill usernames and passwords.

Im not bothered by the change.

It is all a matter of the mechanics. As long as some sort of zoom action happens on selection we will be alright. Think of it as a button that you press for action, that is bringing up the keyboard.

In any event the big issue here isn't the interface but rather the Stability of Safari. It crashes way to much - way way to much!!!

Frankly if they want to improve Safari I have a few suggestions:

1.
Get rid of the system bar at the top of the browser. It just wastes space on the small screen. If need be make it a selectable feature. Another line of text is a lot more useful than looking at the AT&T symbol and time !

2.
Add a bottom of page button or implement some sort of quick scroll. Getting to the bottom of a long forum page is a pain.

3.
Fix all the crashes. Had to add this one.

4.
Speed up JavaScript and make it more robust.

5.
Come up with a solution to the Flash video problem. No Flash from Adobe isn't the answer as I've had enough crashes. Just add the code required to decode and play the content.

6.
Like it or not I want to be able to save content locally from Safari. Especially web pages/sites and PDF documents. Of course I also want to be able to view such of line. That is really the whole point because sometimes all comma are down.

Well a few ideas. In anyevent stability first.

If the decision process is anything like the app store decision process it's probably a huge waste of time.

No way. They added the (+) icon in the middle and the search icon, the ability to save images too, without overhauling Safari. Still the same old crashing crap. Not that it couldn't happen, but this small change does in no way mean that it is an overhaul.

I like this design. It will slide over, not drop down. Hasn't anyone ever used Safari in landscape? Same thing.

And to the guy who was saying you should get rid of the top system bar...why?? When you scroll down into the web page, the top address bar disappears completely. I'll agree the bottom row of buttons could be a little smaller.

I think I agree with a lot of people when I say that I like Mobile Safari a lot more the way it is now. Having the search box there makes everything too crowded and makes the address bar too short. I hardly ever use the search box anyway.

Has No One Used Landscape Mode?

LOL, these posts crack me up. It seems that since the almost year and a half that the iphone has been out, no one has been to a website or searched or began conducting a search in Lanscape mode in safari. This truely shows that we obviously don't use landscape mode to type and portrait mode is perfect for text and another reason why apple probably haven't added landscape mode for SMS because portrait Mode works perfectly. For everyone who hasn't noticed that in landscape mode in safari, the google is next to the url bar just like as is proposed in this 2.2 update. When you click on the URL bar in landscape mode, it shows you the url in a bigger space and next to it the google search bar. If you click on the google search bar, it expands to most of the screen leaving a little part of the url bar to the left as the google bar was to the right. But when you are browsing webpages, the URL bar is completely across the screen so you know what webpage you are on. It only shows up like this when you go to the url bar and then it shows both the url bar and the google search which actually works out better because it gives you more space for the webpage. I suggest everyone enters a search or webpage in safari in land scape mode and get back to me. Hope this post made sense. :)

The current implementation is definitely better.

Agreed, although I'm not opposed to change and who knows, maybe there is an unforseen benefit to the new implementation (does the address-bar disappear if you click the google field, or visa-versa?)

But I think an even better decision would have been to just have the thin title line and have the address/google bar slide-down (appear) when you tap the title-line. That way more screen real-estate would be given to what the user actually wants to see (the webpage content).

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

I kinda like the new implementation of the search bar but overall I'm indifferent about since it could go either way and I would be fine with it. I do hope that this isn't the only change to it.

There are two ways to get to the google field now:

1. Tap the address bar. Tap the google field: 2 taps
2. Tap the magnifying glass. This brings up the page fields and puts the cursor in the google field: 1 tap

This is better because:

* There is only one way to get to the google field and it is 1 tap.
* It is more obvious: You tap on the google field to do a google search, not on an abstract icon or, worse, the address bar.
* I assume you get to see a portion of your search terms in the title bar. That's a nice bit of context.

I also assume that the search and address fields no longer pop up together as they do now. Currently the google field pops up when all I want to do is type an address and the address field pops up when all I want to do is do a search.

Focus on the stuff that matters Apple!!

SERIOUSLY. Why do they bother with tiny little things like this that make no difference at all!?

Apple would get more customers if they added MMS and copy and paste... but who is going to change their mind about the iPhone now that you can access google in one tap instead of two?

crashing

As long as the intermittent Safari crashing ceases i will be all for any interface changes.

I'm sure everyone here is aware of that... People are just saying how it looks too cramped in portrait mode.

I 100% agree, this is stupid!

Well, seeing as how this change is merely moving a few things around in interface builder, and copy and paste is a much larger undertaking... I don't think the copy and paste team lost any work because of this.

I don't get why people don't think this is better. Now with one tap you can select either address or search. I'm assuming if you hit the address area the address field expands search field shrinks and vice-versa. (See landscape mode browsing.)

Before, if you wanted to search you tapped the address bar and then tapped again to move the cursor to the google field. I have actually thought to myself in the past that this was inefficient.

Nice

*waves hand dismissively

yes. i like. more of that. you. you will give me more of that. go. code.
