Mockups of a 4.94-Inch 'iPhone Plus' Show Why a Larger iPhone Might Make Sense

I just saw the note II in this guys hand a few minutes ago... Mannn his hand had to be fully open with his fingertips barely coming around the edges! That thing is huge! I would personally like for the IP5 to be the size of the SGSIII or even a bit bigger but not where I can barely grip the edges.

I am on a 4S and won't get a 5 because I can't stand the screen size. I think it's time that Apple finally makes a screen that is wider.
I don't care if your commercial shows that you can swipe from one side to the other with your thumb.
I can do that with an S3 also.

I truly hope Apple make a phone wider and not just taller.
I'd buy the mockup right now if it was out.

They need to widen it up a bit. It's too skinny now.

It's not really "skinny"

It's a 4" 16x9 phone... and that size has been used on other phones for years.

Plus... it took Apple 6 years to get to this screen ratio... so I doubt they will be changing it again anytime soon.

I'd like to hear what the developers say about this. how hard would it be for them to cater to a growing number of types of devices.
if they continue like this, fragmentation is bound to happen some day.

1080p 5" screens are old school... they should use 4K and call them ultra retina :D. joking aside a 4.2 or 4.3" would be nice

The "iPhone Note" ???

Are you kidding???...They would sell like hotcakes!!!
(pass the butter & syrup)

Am I the only one who thinks of the iPad mini when I see a bigger iPhone?

I think the same thing.

On another note, Marco's talk about the screen size makes perfect sense and I expect Apple to do exactly that. Also, if they can do that, I expect a iPad Mini retina display to have the full sized version's retina resolution. That way developers only have to deal with 4 screen resolutions and Apple's screen sizes will go 4", 4.9", 7.9", & 9.7".

Lots of 9's there. o_O

i personally think that more pixels are better, and i hope a larger iPhone is released, but with a higher resolution.

I would invite all the posters who think Apple should be listening to their opinions to read Clayton Christensen's "The Innovator's Dilemma." He points out how when companies are at their apex, they create their own demise by listening to their customers. When you listen to your customers you spend your time giving them what they say they want. But as Steve said "People don't know what they want until you give it to them."

I hope Apple is deaf to all the advice-giving of people. Because if that's what they turn into, a new company is going to come along with a disruptive technology and kick Apple to the curb. And they'll have their well meaning customers to thank for killing them.

If Apple hadn't listened to customers there would be no app store. Just sayin...

Problem with going to 4.9" screen while keeping the same resolution (albeit lesser ppi) as the iPhone 5 is it defeats the purpose of going to a bigger screen - to display more information. By going to 264 ppi on a 4.9" screen, you won't be fitting that much more information the display since the pixels will be bigger. It just means that what you'll be looking at will be easier to see. Kinda opposite of progress don't ya think?
I would not consider "progress" when content is smaller. You can't argue that soft keyboard buttons will be bigger: easier to type. And text will be bigger: icon labels, web sites, ebooks, movies.

I don't necessarily want more content to be displayed. I want things easier to read. On my iMac I have highest resolution available 2560 x 1440. But instead I prefer 1920 x 1080.

Bigger screens always easier to read - no brainer.

Does anyone note why the iPhone 5 is taller but not wider? Basic ergonomics. The width of the iPhone is ideal for being able to operate across the entire screen with one hand. Going larger sacrifices usability... and the rule of thumb with usability is that all of your best features are only as useful as the usability of the user interface. Translation: A larger screen than you can operate in one hand defeats its usability.
Is the tiny text and tiny soft keyboard good for usability? And, by the way I still can easily operate my 4.8" phone with single hand.

This only makes sense to an idiot. There is absolutely nothing you can do with a 5" iPhone that you can't do with an 4" iPhone. Not to mention that we don't need bigger phones, we need smaller ones. Remember when tech actually shrunk in size to become more portable? Now, you walk into AT&T or Verizon and the phones are the size of legal pads. If I wanted a tablet, I would BUY A TABLET. Is there some guy in Cleveland still able to wedge his iPhone into his pocket that we need to make a larger one? Honestly, if this is what Apple's been spending their R&D on, its no wonder that their stocks have begun to bleed value. I fear that the Age of Apple has finally come to an end. Was fun while it lasted.

I think just because everyone else is making huge phones does not make a smaller phone behind the times, to many that could have great value because they do not wish to use a phone the size of a small tablet. I still like my iPhone 4S and the only time I want it larger is when I am lounging around and would want a tablet at that time anyway.

I think I would have to use a larger phone to know for sure what I truly like the most.

I had the s3 for a while. Now that I'm finding myself using my phone more and more as a tablet. I am hoping apple releases a 4.9 inch phone. I would buy it day one.

Only reason I switched from the s3 to the iphone 5 was because the UI, I couldn't stand android. LOVED the massive screen size tho

Funny that many ppl in this thread say 4" is too small and 4.2" or 4.3" is perfect. I remember seeing a lot of ppl saying 4" would be perfect before iPhone 5 came out.

In my opinion if Apple does want to release a larger phone, it should either go around or above 5" or just stay at 4", having anything in-between, Apple is still smaller than competitors and developers have to update their app again just to accommodate the extra 0.2,0.3 inches, which in reality isn't that much of a difference. I recently compared an Galaxy S2(4.3") with an iPhone 5, the S2 was a tad bigger but certainly not ground breaking difference.

That being said, I still think Apple will not release a bigger phone anytime soon. Even if we see leaked news/pictures, it just means Apple is testing various sizes and models like they always been doing. Sure a lot of people chose Android because of the bigger screen size, but I bet vast majority of them got Android is actually because of the price.

For ppl new to the smartphone world, iOS/Android ecosystem pretty much means nothing if all they care was screensize, then they would probably choose Android based on price, give that screensize is the same.

I always get a kick out of reading the comments. The iSheep hypocricy known no limits. A few months ago these forums were filled with bashing the S3 and the Note 2 as too big, unusable, etc. Look at the comments now, when the beloved Apple might be making a big phone... Pathetic

Yes I dont know how I cope walking about with this Plasma TV in my pocket. Look how dinky the iPhone 5 looks next to it. :D

Image

i dont see anything dinky. for one your image on the iphone is on safari so the lower bar makes the image look smaller as to where on your phone the icons overlap your image. also the huge black buttons underneath the screen have and effect of making your screen look bigger but its not any taller than the iphones, its just really wide... which looks awfully hard to use with one hand...

sticking with the 5

C'mon now. I don't have huge hands and I can easily grip a 7.9" 4x3 aspect ratio iPad mini with 1 hand, fingers easily gripping the sides. I'm sure the note fit comfortably in that guy's hands... unless he had super tiny kid size hands.
