I´m not sure about the standard options in the US, but a 5series should have DSC - helps a lot in winter, with decent winter tyres, you shouldn´t have much of a problem. I even used a 3 series convertible to travel in winter through austria / alps, lots of snow and ice, but nothing it could not cope with ... Just don´t ever try to fit cheap chinese winter tyres on this car....

Check the front track control arms, with this mileage, they are probably worn-out . and test all the electronics gadgets, if some of them are defective, it´s probably going to get expensive... is the automatic air conditioning working fine, especially the amount of air coming out of the air outlets, steady or not... another bmw problem is the blower output electronic system...

with the 2001 series, you´re getting the m54 engine generation, no problems with reliability, they usually last forever, only the vanos sooner or later needs a service / adjustment....

Thanks for the tips, I'll check w/the mechanic tomorrow. The car does have DSC, I noticed the switch during the test drive. I'll thoroughly check all of the random gadgets tomorrow also.

ok, one last thing: if the car is cold, you start it and the engine sounds like a dieselwith ticking noises and not as smooth as an inline six should usually sound like, there is a so called disa unit in the air intake system, that can regulate how much air goes to the engine, if that is defective it rattles and the engines performance is not as good as it should be:

this is how the engine should sound like:

and here you can see a defective and a working one:

btw: the dsc is a 2 step thing, if you switch it off, some basic stability functions still stay in place, only if you press the button for more than 2 seconds, it disables everything - if you disable it, be aware of what you´re doing, it can then get quite nasty if the road is wet or icy...

Yup. He's buying for himself more than anyone else. Who cares about being sensible? I mean it's only his brother, a brand new driver. What does any of that matter as long as his penis size is reflected in the car.

A little harsh, and probably accurate.

At least he has admitted that he has a horse in this particular race.

I hope it doesn't end with his little brother getting hurt.

Aaaaaaaand this thread has officially left the rails.

Mods, please close?

I should add one thing beforehand, just so you guys know. Asian cultures are not as possessive as American culture is. Things are owned within the family, not by individuals. So yes, we all drive each other's cars when we want or need to. For example, if any of us needs to drive long distances, we take the Prius. I feel like you guys are judging me for wanting to drive a car meant for my little brother (my original comments were mostly tongue-in-cheek, anyways), but it's not a big deal for our family. So please don't act shocked in the future if you meet an Asian family that shares things, it's totally normal and not some sign of greed or whatnot on my part.

I certainly hope he doesn't get hurt driving around, either. But I also don't think RWD is a life-or-death proposition, and if you guys gave me some data or something to support your claims (rather than offensively accusing me of not caring about my brother or having manhood issues), I'd take it into account. I'm simply unconvinced that RWD is so diabolical. I see plenty of little old ladies driving around in RWD BMW's all winter long, and the cars that I see on the side of the road when things get really nasty (not that he'll be allowed to drive in those conditions anyways) are not any one particular drivetrain.
