Now this is what will threaten Apple's plans for a ridiculously priced $1,000 Apple Watch. Other than a very small segment of Apple's core demo, why spend that kind of money on a kitchy gadget that will outdate itself within a year or so? If I were able to pony up that kind of cash for a new watch, I'd much rather spend it on a true luxury brand that subtlety incorporates smart watch functionality, as opposed to Apple's unproven product. (I love Apple, too, but sorry, they cannot compete in the fashion wearables market and especially at that price point.)

I think I'll send this to John Gruber so he can file it away in his clam chowder folder. :)

Btw, Watch starts at $349, not $1000.

So you've actually used it? I'm sure after CES everyone and their mother will be saying Apple needs to be concerned or is doomed. Just like they've been saying since the original iPhone that Apple is doomed because it doesn't sell a cheap phone and Android has all the market share. :)

I agree but your missing the main point. Apple is completely out of its element here in the fashion wearables market. The computer/smartphone/tablet space is very different and the jury is very much still out on Apple's ability to compete here. This Spring will be interesting.

Right. That's why based on his article, I specifically pointed out the small segment of Apple's consumers who may be interested in the $1,000 range directly competing with Montblanc, Omega, Tag, etc.

(Anyway, Gruber's a big douchey Yankees fan who doesn't allow comments) ;)

I've never thought Apples top range watch would compete with my high-end timepieces, though I am planning on buying one of their "reasonable" priced watches to satisfy my watch fetish. I'm definitely interested in checking this band out in person. Ironically this band costs the same if not less than one link in one of my "expensive" watches.

Better idea than watch. I can see guys witn Panerai, Patek or other Rolex watches using this while i can never imagine them getting a watch from Apple.

Montblanc is a German company. ;)

Ah well shows how much I know about the high end watch industry. :

I'm still taking a wait and see approach on Watch. When has Apple 2.0 ever announced a prouct that people weren't bearish about? The watch is doomed to failure just like every other Apple product was/is.

Montblanc is one of several luxury watchmakers adding smartwatch-inspired products to their 2015 portfolios.

Well maybe my Rolexes (Submariner and Datejust) won't be obsolete after I get that Apple Watch.
Space Black 42mm stainless steel case with basic black band, please.

It's a German company but it's watches are Swiss made and it's part of the Richemont group.

It's sensible to wait on the :apple:Watch, it's not like you have to pledge allegiance as soon as the product is announced. :D

This feels like a hail marry pass full of confusion and anxiety about the future of smartwatch devices.

The game is going to change significantly as soon as the :apple:Watch is available for purchase.

Interesting idea. Particularly for those wanting to wear their old analog watch.

It's a pity it only works for Montblanc watches - and that the electronics aren't Apple.

So how about if all the analog manufacturers release replacement straps/bracelets for their analogs with a slot for an Apple watch on the back? It would be just like this Montblanc idea: Analog on the outside of the wrist, Apple digital on the back. Best of both worlds.

So what happens when your Apple Watch outdates itself and needs replacing in 2 years? Money wasted. At the Omega Speedmasters' price point, wouldn't you rather have a timeless luxury analog piece that has smart watch capability?

I can see the benefits of a Fitbit type of health related functionality in Apple's upcoming watch, but beyond that it's kind of pointless. "But, but Apple Pay??" (Whatever)

I still don't see a need for a watch and I have Apple Pay already in something I already carry with me, my phone.

It should fit other watches with the same width lugs.

I'd think the :apple:Watch is bit too chunky to wear like that.

interesting.... i thought the Swiss said they had nothing to fear from smart watches? Apple watch isn't even available yet and they are mounting an offensive.

As if someone who can lay down the cash for an iWatch will have only ONE watch.

There is no threat to Rolex or Speedmaster or any other quality brand.

You can count the minutes as to how long it will take for that watchband screen to accumulate scratches and become unreadable.

considering this is a MUCH better compelling product that Apple watch (batter life itself justify it being a "Must have")

are you sure it's not Apple that is "concerned"?

I had zero interest in wearable before...but this changes everything. I might be one of the first in line to get one of these straps. Finally, I can have my cake and eat it too.
