I still don't think even Apple would stoop so low as putting a 9600M GT in a three thousand dollar 17" laptop. I mean it's possible but, the fabric of space time will take a beating.
Hopefully the redesigned cases will bring about better cooling, apparently the current cooling set up is pretty much unchanged since the PB G4? Even has cheapo thermal paste..
A 9600 GT is exactly what's going to be showing up in Apple's next computer... assuming it's not another 8600 GT. If you'd been following them at all during, oh, I don't know.... any time during the history of their computers, you'd see quite clearly that during the last ten years (PowerBook G3, starting with the ATI Rage LT), they've always used mid-range cards in their laptops. This will be no exception. The 9600 GT is a solid midrange card, a nice step up from the 8600 GT (though not a huge leap). The shaders are clocked significantly higher, and you get a 14.4% memory clock boost. GPU clock increases are minimal, but it doesn't seem to matter much (it's not a fillrate-bound card).
And yes, obviously the case design is rather similar to the original 450 and 500 MHz PowerBook G4. Perhaps you shouldn't be commenting quite so much with implied claims to knowledgeability if this is news to you.
You're right, though.... Apple should do a better job with the thermal paste, that's a no-brainer.
However, the form factor is such that you will not see heavy-duty graphic processors in the MacBook Pro without being rendered sterile if you keep it on your lap for more than fifteen seconds. Since Apple isn't looking to neuter their customers, it's not likely that'll happen (also given history).
I disagree - the Mobility Radeon 9700 was a great card when it came out, and was a good match for the PowerBook
Not really. The Mobility Radeon 9700 was a severely crippled version of the desktop 9700, featuring half the pixel pipes, and a 128-bit (and sometimes 64-bit) memory interface.
Actually, it was really a Radeon 9600.... kind of an AGP version of the X600. Not a bad card, but definitely midrange. Barefeats benchmarked it years ago and it was not a stellar performer.
