Nope. Part of the reasons I can justify paying the Apple tax is that I'm treated like a customer, not a product. I'll go back back to a flip phone before I use a phone with core apps that have ads.
Same. If Apple moves away from user-centric experiences, I'll need to find something else or go back to dumb phones. Schiller nails it back in the day:

Hope this rumor doesn't pan out
If it does, it will be an interesting twist on things.

Part of the deal the carriers originally got in being able to carry the iPhone was that there would be no carrier branding and crapware.

Apple going to that level I just see as hypocrisy. Yet, its Apple, so perhaps I haven't been paying enough attention over the years.

Apple will monetize your data but skew it in such a way it makes it less bad then google.

Given we are hitting peak iPhone design and you can only upgrade every few tweets it’s not surprising ads are the direction they’ll go to increase profits.

Or they should make something innovative if they're that so concerned about their profits.

I disagree with the idea that we are reaching peak iPhone, we are far from it. There's so much that Apple can do with the iPhone.

It's an interesting read but it's very light on facts and it mostly speculates what will Apple do and where it will add ads. It got me a bit worried though.

Apple's plan was never to remove ads from your life, it was only ever to gain your trust for their company so that you would ultimately trust THEIR ad platform. How do we know this? Take a look at Apple's ad platform revenues ever since they went after Facebook tracking, their business blew up overnight and they quickly overtook Facebook as the biggest ad provider on iOS devices. Apple's language regarding ads has always been about how invasive the tracking technology was from the other guys but they never mention how ads themselves cheapen user experiences:

I want suggestions in the App Store because those apps are brilliant, not because the guy with the biggest funding round could out-ad the other guy.

I want suggestions in Maps for local businesses because those places are rated highly amongst real customers in the community, not because those businesses are paying for ads.

I want book suggestions from real world experts and book fanatics, not because the publisher bankrolled their favorite author.

Sure, this rumor is "unsubstantiated" but we all know Timmy's obsession with growing the services side of Apple means this will happen sooner or later. It was always going to come to this.

"Guys guys guys!!! When they do it it's creepy, when we do it it's okay because we 'anonymize' the data beforehand!!! That means putting ads everywhere in the operating system is totally okay!"

Unfortunately, most forms of review have already been corrupted. Whether allowing self-written reviews, finding ways of rewarding for positive reviews, removing negative reviews, or numerous other approaches. Much as I wish it were otherwise.

When it comes to App Store, I find forays there to find things I might want almost always end with nothing purchased. All too often, you cannot determine the real cost of apps. Not much of an issue for an 89 pence lightweight app. But I'd like to know what I am in for before downloading and finding essential features need to be paid for.

And in Maps, I'll overlook a lot, but so many ads in mapping services are out of date, inaccurate, even wrongly located.

It’s simply the normal process of the capitalistic system we live in…
  • Step 1: Make something that society likes and grows accustomed to using it every day
  • Step 2: Monetize it’s popularity for CEO and shareholder value
Corporations aren’t human beings with feelings that should “do the right thing”. Apple is simply a machine to make money through any means necessary. Anything they spout about privacy being a human right or other social justice narratives are simply marketing for their image / public relations.

It does today.

I have two pesky ads right at the top of the Settings app in all my iOS devices, advertising their music streaming service and gaming subscription service.

Ads should not be in the core experience of the iPhone if Apple wants to keep on charging a premium for its devices and to continue to be seen as ‘the’ premium consumer electrics manufacturer.

Else what is the difference between Apple and say, Samsung?

This move - if it’s real - is just venal.

Apple would be a better company if it was forced to sell off much of its service business (aka ‘the squeezing incremental revenue division’).

And the way that things are going with legislators around the world, that really might happen in a few years time.
