So just what the heck does "our checks" mean?

They always say that. "Our checks in Asia indicate the foam packing peanuts aren't staying in the boxes." Or something like that.

How do they know these things? Are they breaking into the factories at night? Is "our checks" just a plaecholder for "our illegal activities?" Because if that IS what it means I'd actually trust these stories a lot more! Please tell us all about breaking in through the back door at 2 AM and then I will be MUCH more willing to believe you!

Probably the same people who like to speak "on the condition of anonimity because they aren't authorized to speak to the press" but do so anyway.

Just found out that one of the schools in my district is going to have an iPad pilot program. I have a feeling we'll be able to get enough considering the district has 1,000+ Macs and probably keep Apple Enterprise Support operating singlehandedly.

I know this is off topic but this is the most recent iPad thread. I was watching the iPad video on Apples website and I noticed something on the screen. What is the logo or icon beside the "slide to unlock"

I think sometimes these analysts make statements in the hope there is a delay. If it happens then they look good and get a few more clients. If they are wrong everyone forgets about it anyway.

Common Pattern on Macrumours:
Pro Apple articles and Analysts are great
Negative Apple articles and Analysts don't know what they are talking about

That's the photo slideshow icon for when it's docked.

It turns the iPad into a digital picture frame.

Ditto that! Finally someone talking sense.

The idea that Apple would slap a camera into the iPad as a last minute "surprise" is absolutely ridiculous.

Guys, please, go and inform yourselves a bit about how large scale productions work. This ain't Steve and Jony handbuilding iPads in a garage, m'kay?
Tools and moulds for the iPad have been made MONTHS ago, as have the internal engineering and design. You can't just "add" something like a camera to an existing design without having to change the whole production line! After making a camera-version they would then have to have another lengthy period of testing and bug-fixing. On top of that they would have to change all the PR material and documentation for the product, manuals, product photos, packaging, homepage info, press material, everything!

Sorry, but the idea of a "surprise camera" on the iPad is a non-starter.
griz is absolutely right; what you've seen is what you get. Live with it.

So how do you explain the original iPhone getting a glass screen at the last minute (relatively speaking)?
It's already proven (to a degree) that there is already a space for a camera to be put in.......hardly a production line changing alteration to the spec is it.
Me, camera or no camera, I don't care, but you should check Apple history before giving off 'facts'.

P.S Your patronising tone doesn't do you any justice.

Oh, I suspect the origin of these "scarcity" stories is Apple itself. Maybe I'm a cynic, but here I am, someone planning on buying an iPad and I can't stop checking email and sites to see if the pre-orders are available yet. It's pathetic.

My thoughts exactly.

just out of curiosity, have you seen the FCC filings? If not, how do you know what was submitted? You are possibly just a wrong as the other guy is right. Steve demoed a prototype. It's a protoype because you can't buy the ones displayed. Just saying, maybe we shouldn't be so absoulte in our statements. People didn't even know what the ipad looked like until Steve showed it. Who knows what they have been cooking up?

FCC filings have nothing to do with a camera feature. It's irrelevant.

And no, I don't think Apple Marketing spends millions of dollars producing glitzy promotion videos and marketing material for a prototype they intend to change, so they'll have to do it all over again after they've added a "surprise camera". But keep dreaming.

I think this is why there's no advanced pre-order

I think this is why there's no advanced pre-order. If Apple go a bazillion pre-orders and had to give a estimated ship date of Christmas 2011 it would look bad.

None of this is indication of a built in camera at launch. For all we know, the glass screen was one of two options Apple was still testing until weeks after it's introduction, and was ready to go when the iPhone began production.

It was saved as an announcement coupled with YouTube.app, as last minute attention getter.

These pieces of history do not indicate anything as significant as adding a camera within days of announcement of the iPad, so that production could begin for March release.

https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//#MacBook_Pro

right now the price/value ratio for them is a joke compared to what is on the market

Doesn't make it overdue by Apple's standard upgrade cycles and people are still happily buying them. They've always been under-spec'd compared to similar market models for a lesser price. Apple products cost more, and people who buy Apple realise there is more to value than the cost of an object and the processor speed.

There will be no major macbook pro redesign until at least 12 months after the last model ('Mid 2009').

Camera Shmamera

This device doesn't need a camera, it would be a PITA to use, I don't wanna video chat with someone looking up my nose, and if it's resting on a desk, it would be doing so next to my desktop - pointless.

Why the obsession? I don't understand it.

You are a ball of contradiction. In one sentence you say that they could have had two options ready to go, and then in another, the direct opposite.

Adding a camera is not significant, at least in the sense that it is basically the same process as adding a screen. Attach and connect.
