BB Messenger is less about the service that's offered (threaded, always-on, instant messages) and more about the "exclusivity" of the service - a private, BB-only club. Whether you think it's silly or not, this is a very appealing feature to some people. I think Apple would win over a lot of BB users if they developed a similar, iPhone-only IM system.

I wouldn't mind seeing an iPhone Messenger myself as there's at least 6 other people where I work that have iPhones. Some of my friends might getting iPhones and my mom who has a Blackjack II wants an iPhone badly after playing with mine lol.

I am big fan of iPhone. I have used it for a year and then company gave me
BB. I have been using BB for past 5 months and I still say iPhone is the best except few big items they lack:

1. Email search. BB is best.. has many fields how you can search your emails on BB. God knows why Apple can't provide this.

2. We had a option of using iPhone for enterprise plan, but our IT told that due to iTunes account one can purchase songs/movies etc.. Apple hasn't provided a clean way of detaching enterprise to consumer way of doing..

Over all, my opinion is that if you are a regular consumer they enjoy iPhone best.. if you are enterprise and depend on emails big time, BB is the way to go..

To mach enterprise features, iPhone OS has to go long way..

my 2c.

I switched back to a Blackberry Curve so I could message my cousin in Buffalo, yes I have money for text messaging and stuff, but 25 cents for every message sent both ways (from me to him, him to me). If the iPhone had a messaging service similar to the iPhone, my cousin would be more than happy to have an iPhone since he loves his iPod touch and was actually considering the iPhone for quite some time.

HELLO guys, I started this thread but a lot of you are not understanding what MESSAGING IS. It's something where you send you a message and the other party would get NOTIFIED.

The iphone currently does not have message notification. SMS will cost you money. Push email will only work if you have mobile/exchange. Blackberry PROVIDES THIS RIGHT NOW FREE OF CHARGE.

No, it's not "free" with the data plan. It's the basis of the data plan, and it's what you pay monthly for. Please don't mischaracterize it as "free."

So you're saying the $30/month for a BB data plan is mostly for the BB messenger? A feature a lot of Blackberry users probably will never use? And the internet/push email ISN'T the basis??

:D

You're funny.

they told me about a messaging system where they can message each other free of charge. With SMS costing a lot and the lack of IM on the iPhone I guess it is better.

Didn't I see a free sms app in the app store? idk if it works but i think i saw something like that

HELLO guy, this was already discussed. I made a thread about it a few months ago and people went crazy (some of them, not all).

I agree. Its nothing but greed to make data plan and text msg have separate fees. After all, isn't a text msg data?!? I can't believe consumers and consumer groups have not complained about this scam. Its good that cheaper cell services are coming to chicago, e.g. cricket, that have unlimited voice and text plans for $40... Now if only they'd get better phones ;)

I have $5 for 200 messages which is a ripoff. I understand people not wanting to pay $20 for unlimited, its daylight robbery. As time progresses technology should get cheaper not more expensive as text messaging has done. On my first cellphone on voicestream (prepaid) I could text message all I want with no extra charges, it was completely free.

My cousin had a first generation iPhone, then he bought a Blackberry Storm. He used the Storm for a couple of days, hated it and bought an iPhone 3G. He's happy again. I hear stories like this all the time of people leaving the iPhone for something that's supposed to be "better" and end up coming back for the iPhone. You just can't beat it's user interface and ease of use.

your friends are not to smart, IM is available and SMS costing a lot? uhm ok. use IM or get a better plan, or how about... if you use a lot of SMS, call the person!

Your "forehead slapper" solutions won't fit everybody's schedule. Thanks for the outstanding suggestions though.

I think the iPhone desperately needs a persistent presence/IM app like BBM.

iChat with push could be it. I'd take that.

Me too! I just want iChat. Just give me iChat and I won't care about global push support anymore!

iChat requires push support........

I said global push. If they just gave us iChat with push notifications (they could do that if they wanted... they could do anything), then I'd forget about 3rd party push.

I'm going to switch if apple doesn't WOW me with 3.0.
I just don't understand, the iPhone could be simply AMAZING if they would add better customization, mms, copy/paste, Landscape keyboard, blah blah blah.

They just wont do it. I don't know. Please apple, Wow me, I really want to keep my iPhone, but I will have no choice.

You do have a choice by the way. You either like Apple and enjoy using their products, or you move on to another phone.

Thats obviously your opinion.. I'm as Pro-Apple as anyone on this forum, yet I had no problem switching back to a Blackberry Pearl after having an iPhone for a year, in MY opinion, the BB interface is easier to use. Press the scroll ball, switch between currently running apps... No more finger swiping through multiple pages to get to an app. The ability to use folders on the home screen (without the need for jailbreaking and using Categories). Using the physical keyboard as shortcuts within applications...

I'm not knocking the iPhone, I had my own reasons for switching, but to some people the iPhone interface and ease of use CAN be beat.
