Q: Concern about the glossy screens. Are you going to offer another option?
A: Steve: We're going all glass -- we won't offer another version. Phil: You offset the reflection by the brightness, and consumers love it. One of the great things about a notebook is you can turn it however you want!

I am completely blown away. This is terrible. The ACD's are going this route as well?

My last gen, matte Macbook Pro and two 23" ACDs just skyrocketed in personal value to me.

I'll really try to get two 30's to replace my 23's right before they update them to the new HP look.

No matte displays

This must be the biggest Apple failure I have seen in years. It seems quality is being replaced with quantity yet again. Oh well. No christmas this year kids.

well, at this rate my current MBP with a matte screen and firewire just also skyrocketed in value!!! ...soooo glad I didnt sell it on a whim. *off to ebay to get a larger notebook hard drive*:D

Hey at least the Macbook has an aluminum enclosure now and better video graphics, led screen. Having firewire would be good but for me I just have 1 firewire/usb device a hard drive that I'm gonna replace anyway with a USB only one (cause I hate having to plug in the power cord)

For the Pros having the matte option would be better but isn't there anti glare coverings you can buy?

I'll be getting the MacBook but anyone know about the performance of the 9400M ? Would it at least be comparable to a 7800 GS

Anyway I think these new laptops look sweet, love the screen border, black keyboard is fine with me, aluminum, this is gonna be great.

RIIIIGGGGHHHTTT! And you and the rest of the whiners (we knew there would be whiners after the hype) will be buying a new Mac notebook either today or very soon. Apple will sell these like crazy, who are you to say it's a fail??? Every time someone says Apple's products are a fail, Apple's sales are on an all-time high and beating the competition. :p

Actually I won't be buying a new MBP despite I was planning to (it seems I will hold on to my old one). I know two more people with the same sentiments.

It's a fail for me, I am not speaking for the general public, so don't get too excited buddy. Go buy one if you like it.

Why is it if someone does not agree with the direction Apple is taking, or disagrees in any way with a decision Apple takes, they are called a whiner?
Sheesh, man.

Sure, many of us "whiners" will probably end up buying one of those since there simply are no options. But ending up buying isn't the same as being happy about it and therefore the whining. The things we whine about (FW and matte screens) were there two days ago so they should be here today.

Make your complaint official, and apple will listen (and provide change)...

Please please please do it! Complain about whatever you want - just make sure you include the crappy prices!

Did my part...
:apple::apple::apple:

Dear Apple,
I'm a pro user, Apple solution expert and a APPL share holder and I'm very sad to say that I was totaly and utterly dissapointed by the new notebook product line. Here are my thoughts.

Glossy screens
Those who have tried both matte and glossy screens knows what I'm talking about. Sure, colors may appear more saturated on a glossy screen but there is nothing that says that a good matte screen shouldn't be good at displaying colors. With a glossy screen there is much greater problems with reflections, mirroring, dirt, dust and smudge than with a matte screen. Then there are personal preferences as well, myself I develop hedaches when using a glossy screen, I have two MBP 17", one with glossy and one with matte screen so I do notice the difference. There are several reports that confirm this and in several european countries there are regulations about using glossy screens in workplaces and those regulations are there for a reason. Sure, you can move or adjust your work place to avoid reflections in the screen, but why would I have to rearrange my desk in order to make my new $2000 laptop work as it should? Also, rearranging my workplace or moving around gets hard when travelling like on a train or in a plane. Sure you can turn off the light in the room to avoid refelections but why would I want to work in darkness? Sure, I can adjust the screen brightness to compensate the reflections but then agian, why would I do that? How grey would the black parts of the screen get and how much would the increased brightness affect the battery performance while travelling? All those problems could easily be fixed by offering a matte screen as an option to the glossy one. To me a glossy screen is a big "no no" and I will simply not buy a machine with a glossy screen based on my thoughts above. This is a worsening of the product line.

Firewire
First, the Macbook. I currently own a white Macbook that I mainly use when on vacation. Checking emails, backing up photos from my camera and movies from my DV-camera. But that will no longer be possible since there is no firewire and my DV-cam is firewire only. Also, at home, this Macbook serves as somewhat of a mediacenter using Eye-tv and that's also firewire only. So there's a "no no" on the Macbook as well. Considering the alternatives, buying a $2000 MBP just to be able to connect my DV-cam when on vacation? No way. Buying a new DV-cam just to be able to connect it to a USB? No way. Big dissapointment. Also, Apple has until now always promoted firewire so all my external equipment such as backup disks etc. are firewire only. What about Firewire target disk mode when troubleshooting or transfering accounts to a new Mac? This is a worsening of the product line.

The Macbook Pro then. Well, when introducing the Macbook Pro CoreDuo there was only one firewire port which was bad and when the Core2Duo version arrived it was equipped with two ports, much better. Why is that better then. Well, many firewire peripherals such as soundcards, Eye-tv some harddrives lacks firewire throughput connectios thus ending the firewire chain. Well, I have two such devices which makes it impossible to connect them both to the new Macbook Pros. Sure I could get myself a expresscard with firewire ports but why would I have to do that on a $2000 portable? This is a worsening of the product line.

The overall design
My personal preferences are that the black border and keyboard are ugly but that is my personal preferences although I think that I shuld share them with you, they are not design flaws as the problems described above but still an issue to me. Also why is the new macbook 15" heavier than the old 15"? That seems really backwards. To me this is a worsening of the product line.

I might sound bitter and disappointed and perhaps I am but I consider yesterdays "upgrades" to be "downgrades". Apple has finally become more style than substance and functionallity has become less important which is sad.

I feel that Apple is unfortunately loosing its goals and failing to provide to fullfill the customers requirements. I have now spent a lot of time reading forums and blogs to get a feel of how the new product line was recieved and I have noticed two things:

1. "Regular consumers" feels that the product line is to expensive and that Apple is to much into the pro-market.

2. "Pro users" feels that Apple is turning to much "consumer" especially when it comes to the glossy screen and firewire flaws and that Apple is forgetting the Pro-users.

That leaves Apple with a very small and uncertain target group, those who are willing to pay premium prices for non-pro products. As a share holder this is troubling. Lycky enough Apple has very loyal customers who are determined to stick with Apple whatever happens and many, like myself, have built and purchased so many things based on the Apple platform such as peripherals and software that there really is no alternative than to stick with Apple. This is sad.

Those are my thoughts and I hope that they are valuable to Apple.

Call 'em!

Hello all... I am new here. Today I filed a complaint with Apple's Consumer Relations Division. I feel I have a merited reason being that I am an Audio professional. I DO have a Mac Pro "tower" but like editing and mixing on a Macbook when I travel. A lot of audio applications require a FW400 device to be attached while in use which makes wonder what Apple is thinking...
THE RESPONSE: The response I recieved was in conversation with Apple tech support was, "I am actaully not sure what Apple was thinking, I just found out yesterday myself. I don't understand because we use it for troubleshooting and diagnostics ourselves..." So even the people at APPLE are not happy...
The person with Apple's Consumer Relation's division said if Apple gets enough viable complaints they may change the design of the products... Posting on this forum may do very little good, that's why WE must file with Apple's Consumer Relations Division which you can speak with my calling the main number and requesting to file a complaint with Apple's Consumer Relation's division...
I like Apple, I think they are a great company, I think they make good products... I mean, I have an Apple Logo on my car!! BUT many of US are AUDIO and VISUAL professional who need products with Firewire 400!
I intend no harm to Apple and want them to succeed in their endeavors... But this was a very poor decision that MANY of us will agree on...

Good idea about calling Apple! Im in Sweden, and my phone english is crappy, but i urge everyone in US to call Apple and complain.
For me, the glary glass gloss is the main issue.. Hm.. Would it make a difference if Id call the Swedish office?

Do NOT buy the computers if youre not happy! Please! Buy previous gen or pre-owned ones. Or switch. Whatever. Just dont buy stuff you dont want, because there is no alternative. Apple can not force their customers to their bidding all the time?

And, this is important, file complaints OFFICIALLY. Whining in these forums doesnt help much.

Well, as mentioned above, I have filed an official complaint to Apple and i urge others to do so too.

Also, I'm sure the whining in those forums are noticed by Apple, why wouldn't they? This is where many of their customers speaks their mind.

By the way... jag såg att du undrade vad du skulle göra och om det är värt att klaga hos Apple i Sverige och det tycker jag att det är men du kan också utnyttja möjligheten att maila in till Apple via deras feedbackformulär.

I'm buying the new MacBook because I like the new design, appreciate the multi-touch glass trackpad, will see better performance with DDR3 memory and will make full use of the improved nVidia GPU. Oh, and I don't care one bit about FireWire. I never used the FireWire port on my old MacBook. Not once.

I've been saving up for a 2.6 Matte 15" MBP, and now this. Way to throw a spanner in my works, Apple. More expensive, absolutely FUGLY, heavier, glossy only - but hey, least it's thinner, right?

Guess I'll have to find one on eBay. Means Apple gets no new money from me, too.

Just out of curiosity, have you even used the new MB/Ps? Because otherwise one would sound quite dumb complaining about something they havent even tried.

Out of curiosity, what the hell would it matter if he has or hasn't? Glossy screens don't get any less glossy in real life, and the lack of ports wouldn't suddenly become any less of an inconvenience.

All you really have to be able to do is visualise your current work pattern, and ascertain all the changes to that you'd need to make with these new machines, then determine whether that's acceptable to you or not.

Personally (yes I've tried them) having to use either Apple's (glossy...? Really?) LED Cinema Display or buy a Mini DisplayPort - DVI adapter ($118 equivalent) to carry on using current external monitors that work FINE on previous MBPs isn't acceptable. Nor are the price hikes(US prices may have dropped or remained constant, but around $200 has been added to new MBAs and MBPs in other markets like the UK), port limitations or glossy only configs. New features else like GPU, processors, drive accessibility etc is great but when they come at the cost of the points raised above, I can't justify a purchase.

On a tangent... if glossy is the Cinema Display's future, then how about rebranding the ACDs we're used to as Studio Displays and having two separate lines? Someone hire me :D

So anyway, off to eBay I go, to buy the last good MBP made with no new profit going to Apple. Angry letters will only do so much, let's hurt Apple in the coffers, only way they'll learn. If you dislike these, don't just "crumble" and get one anyway, the prev gen MBPs are still awesome, get a refurb or used with warranty remaining.

When sales aren't quite like Apple expected, watch in January / Feb for some "revisions", just like how in 2006 the MacBook Pros magically gained fw800 a few months after introduction.

Excited to use the new trackpad.

I realize some users have said that the trackpad feel familiar and that its nothing to drool over, but i have been using a glazed over compaq trackpad...yeah they still make laptops. Excited for my macbook to arrive!!
