Unless you break into other people's houses a lot to see what stationary PCs they have that observation doesn't count for much ;) :p but yes, Apple sells a lot of portables
In fact Apple portables are much easier identified than "Brand X" due to the unique design and predominant glowing Apple. They are more visible. You reading this site also indicates a high probability of you already being conditioned to spot Apple PCs. Me, I can spot & name Macs visible for fractions of seconds in movies / TV-shows and sometimes even tell you the year the movie should have been made in from that sighting. I doubt I am the only one around here.

Apple Notebooks are more visable, but don't hold that high of a overall marketshare (3.9% overall). I believe HP holds the largest notebook marketshare.

Notebooks make up around 45% of Apple's computer sales as opposed to ANY other PC manufacturer who usually only gets around 20-30% [maybe a little more but still far from Apple's ratio] of their computer sales from notebooks

I believe we'll see Apple touting that "more than half' of their computer sales are notebooks within a year [probably less] of the MacBook Pro and MacBook releases.

I was thinking of replacing my PB 12" 867MHz with the new MacBook Pro. But the major things keeping me from upgrading were the CPU (1.83GHz isn't nearly the fastest Core Duo - Apple is keeping something from us?). Mostly though, as a college student, I would love to have Tablet features - I am deciding between a Portege Toshiba and a MacBook Pro. Having used Macs for a decade, and fearing bugs from the sketchy-looking Tablet PC Edition of XP, I really can't decide and I'm ending up waiting.

Perhaps, but my reply was in comment to that "Apple Notebooks" are seen more often and therefore more prevelent. I was stating, yes perhaps Apple Notebooks are seen more often, however this maybe more to their unique design and personal bias. In reality, Apple Notebooks only account for 3 to 4% of all Notebooks sold.

Hmmmm

I have read this thread for 4 days in order to get the opinions of older and wiser mac users. That being said, I LOVE THIS IDEA!

This doesn't look like a G4, G5, ipod, or anything else. I looks like it has attributes of all those things, but still it looks unique.

After looking at the post on HRMPH, it looks like it interacts with other mac devices via blutooth or airport. The music mixer looks like something that you would use with a program running on another screen (ie logic). That couldn't be done on a largescreen ipod. I am not saying this is jusy a glorified remote, because it looks like it has stand alone functions, but it also looks like it interacts with the Mac World.

I loved the zoom feature that is accessed via 2 fingers.

I think this is the missing link of the Mac world. It is a tablet, a net browser, a mini notebook, and an Ipod, that is wireless with total touchscreen control. It's also able to interface with other devices and Mac's, giving it the ability to act as every controller and interface on the market. As a musician and producer I want one NOW!!!

I think it is legit, and I think it does fit into Apple's media strategy. With this I could watch a movie on my TV that is playing on my Imac's frontrow, adjusting the volume, turn off the movie and pull up a saved movie on my Mac media center, AND surf the net, while working in the kitchen. That is functionality, and it fits the most important Apple credo, simplicity, and functionality.

This looks real, and groundbreaking in a way that no other tablet has ever been. Ipod mania is peaking, it's time for the next big thing, and this is it.

I expect it to be out between March '06 and January '07

as long as it/if it comes out and is cheeper than a Wacom Cintique and does the same thing Ill buy one :)

Question - and this is the only potential sticking point I see with a touch-sensitive tablet. How does one avoid scratching or wearing down the screen? It seems to me that over time, this could be a pretty serious issue. I mean - even my ipod click wheel is noticably a bit worn down and dirty in places. How does Apple get around this issue?

Yep, saw that video on Digg. Absolutely @#$%ing breathtaking. I was eagerly anticipating an iSackNewton ;) before this. Now I'm threatening suicide if it doesn't happen.

Yeah I agree. That bug's me too. But the demo shown in earlier posts looks like it would work with a soft touch.

Something simple like the screen saver film PDA uses might be an option.

I was blown away by the Demo link, Also the toolbar at the top of the screen looks very OSX like. I wonder what the program was running on?

As a user of Fujitsu Tablet PC, Tablet PC is very convenient and help me more productive. For all of my note-taking, I have been using the Tablet PC. I cannot use the notebook PC in the meeting at my office and at customers' offices because it is distracting (sound of typing) and also blocks the inter-personal communication because you look like hiding behind the PC.

I feel many people are quick to dismiss Tablet PC even without trying it. Even though it is Windows XP Pro with Tablet Edition features added in, the functionality is very good. If Mac comes out with the Tablet iBook or PowerBook, I will consider buying it. I would have bought a Mac Tablet if that existed.

As a user, how legible is the screen in daylight? I'd love a tablet and would consider an WinXP model but none of the local shops stock them so I can't try one before I commit. I'm kinda' disappointed that my Palm is virtually unusable outside in sunlight.

I use this in my car and in door (such as my office or customers' conference room). There is the quick launch for adjusting the screen brightness and I can use it comfortably at 70% to 80% brightness in most of the very well-lit conference setting (mind you, the tablet is laying flat on the desk and this PC has a good viewing angle; mine has SXGA+ res.). If you are going to use it in out door out door (I mean, like you are always under the sun in the construction site and other similar circumstances, there are other type of Tablet which has a different lightning arrangement; but, it has a poor viewing in indoor though). For my use, I am basically under shade when I use my Tablet.
I have scratched the plan to buy Tablet at the local stores as I don't want to buy run-of-the-mill Joe and Jane will buy (those models are set at the lowest common denominator to be low cost). Fujitsu sells their Tablet PCs online. I have not even considered HP, Gateway, and Toshiba because of quality (HP and Gateway) and heavy weight (Toshiba and Gateway). If you are serious about researching various Tablet PC models, I suggest table PC Buzz (google will lead you its website).

Thanks. YS2003

My need for a tablet is mostly for work out doors on construction sites and general property maintenance facilities management etc.

I just got a Palm T|X to see just how useful it’ll be and, outdoors, it’s been a disappointment due to the screen. Indoors it’s great, text entry while moving about and practically all the property data in a searchable format without carry file upon file.

Depending on the viewing ability of the screen outdoors I’ve decided the ideal machine would be something like this size and spec, but with a twist and fold touch screen for tablet use. Oh by Apple with OSX would be great.
