Maybe this is dorky, but it's be cool if MacTablets had DVI input, so I could hook it up to a Mac mini, and have a sort of iMac. And maybe some sort of sync software + ethernet connection, like how iPods sync to iTunes, or bluetooth cell phones with your contacts, kind of idea. Then I could just disconnect it, and take my data with me for the day. And if there was some plugin architecture for the syncing, so I could do CVS checkouts and checkins of source code...

It seems that every other laptop I see is an iBook or Powerbook.... which would lead me to believe that they have a significantly higher portable market share than desktop market share...

Unless you break into other people's houses a lot to see what stationary PCs they have that observation doesn't count for much ;) :p but yes, Apple sells a lot of portables
In fact Apple portables are much easier identified than "Brand X" due to the unique design and predominant glowing Apple. They are more visible. You reading this site also indicates a high probability of you already being conditioned to spot Apple PCs. Me, I can spot & name Macs visible for fractions of seconds in movies / TV-shows and sometimes even tell you the year the movie should have been made in from that sighting. I doubt I am the only one around here.

My wife has gotten really anoyed with me poking her and saying "Look it's a Mac," when we are at the movie theater.:(

on the subject of real vs screen keyboards...

Anyone remember seeing a technoloy or product that had a projected keyboard? I recall seeing something where the product (presumably a palm or PDA of some sort) would project the keyboard onto whatever surface you were using and you could type right onto the projected keyboard. it somehow detected when you connected with the table. Similar to those palm keyboards where you stand the PDA up, and type on the real keyboard.

Anyone know where this went? It'd be neat that you could keep your hands off the screen that may at some point be presenting video. That's my qualm with onscreen keyboards, I like a spotless screen.

Only problem with those virtual keyboards that I've read is that they really hurt the hands after a while as the hand is just hitting a hard surface with no cushoning.

I really hope apple comes out with a tablet I would buy it the instant it came out. I really want a tablet as they really are nice but I don't want to get a windows tablet pc.

Things Tables Are Good For:

- web surfing
- wireless remote control for your digital hub
- reading books
- drawing (high res screen needed)
- writing, especially if you need to put in formulas or prefer to keep a low profile. Laptops create artificial barriers in small workgroups.
- games (especially boardgames or tactical. Select your troops with the pen while setting the camera angle with the other hand. Sweet!)

Or eating dinner, playing cards, having meetings, stacking papers, or placing one's Cinema Display on.

the new pod!

Before January Macworld i would have said PowerPod ... but now that "Power" has been thrown out the window I would have to with MacPod or PodPro or Propod. Regardless .. it's basically going to be an ipod for the professionals ... except no click wheel .. just one big screen that can display HD movies in widescreen format with controls on the sides or top. With a switch it can change over to Classic Mode ... which will simulate the ipod click wheel ... so half the screen will be the scroll wheel with the buttons above it .. like the 3G ipods and the other will be the rather square display, that's why it's a touch screen. It will have WiFi, bluetooth, 30GB + 60GB hard-drives ... run a simple OS interface .. probably a finder with FrontRow, iLife and possibly iWorks. Advertisement will be simple ... it's your laptop in your pocket ... want to do a presentation ... take your ProPod, hook it up to the TV/Projector and control it with the iRemote Bluetooth using Keynote.

Simple as that ... it's obviously the next step in the evolution of the ipod ... except it will be $600-$900 and they will keep the iPod Video .. basically the will have both an "i" line and a "Pro" line for their portable devices.

Wow, tablets are so useful! I can......uh.....um.............surf the net with it!

It's cool, but not useful for the large large majority of us. So cool factor is high, but practicality is low unless the display's touch screen is good enough to draw on well.

if its a hybrid i'll all in!

Mac Book mini. Low power processor. Stripped down version of OS X. Only runs some applications, not all. 2 USB 2, a dock-connector-with-firewire ...

MacPod

The name MacPod has floated through the forum. I really like it as it will serve as a bridge between the popularity of the iPod and Mac computers. A product like this will get noticed by the millions of people that are buying or lusting after an iPod. It will give your average Joe Windows user an opurtunity to experience and see what ussing a Mac is like because OS X will be installed.

This is the product that will really drive the influx of Mac owners who have purchased iPods. The next iPod they get will be the MacPod! They will use it for a while and then say "I like using OS X more then Windows" I should by a Mac.

It should not be stripped down in any way. There will simply be an add on similar to FrontRow. Issue a gesture and you have your regular OS X desktop! A companion foldable bluetooth keyboard etc.

I would hope there would only be three connectors (Headphone, USB2.0, and dock connector). The dock would give extra USB, Firwire, ethernet, DVI etc.

eh macpod, I think tablet mac, mactablet, or mactab. My guess would go for mactablet as its like macbook but its not a notebook computer its a tablet so mactablet

but who knows its just my opinion on the matter but macpod doesn't sound right to me.

Has anyone else noticed the recent advertising push for tablets again? At least from Gateway, I've seen quite a few television commercials for their laptop tablets.

video iPod with on screen controls.
Say goodbye to click wheels.

If nothing else, Apple are certain doing a lot of R&D even if nothing ever makes it to market and control surfaces are certainly going to get bigger. I can see several applications for changable control surfaces in video / audio mixing / TV remote controls. Maybe not the tablet computer though.

i can already see this warning on the box:

* Warning * Trim your finger nail regularly! :D

Hmm, that could be problematic. I tend to do it semi-regularly just because I often play bass at church and I need them nails short, but on weeks where I just play the ol' 6-string, watch out. :p

Cleaning my ears though, well....

USB 2.0 or firewire could handle video just as well.....

white text. read it again.

As I asked you before, what the heck does a Palm device running a Palm OS have to do with anything Apple?!

Unless, like one of the members posted, maybe it has something to do with the Intel XScale ship, but still, what does that "prove" as you put it?

Hehe. My "ex" hated it when I would point a glimpse of Apple products out to her all the time because she ended up being able to do the same thing involuntarily. :D

It would be MacPod and MacPod Pro, like MacBook and MacBook Pro.

Or MacBook Mini.

I believe that he was joking around and saying that since he's getting a touchscreened device in 5 days apple would of course announce a touch screen device after he recieves his.

try me. i'm a university student, and i believe tablets are useless for me. a view shared with most people i know at the place.

and by the way, 'lug' is spelt 'lug'.

Well I for one, a fellow university student, would absolutely love a tablet mac. Then I could take all my notes on my computer with ease and use it for casually jotting notes during meetings. Bring it on apple!
