For the iPhone 7 they said the removal of the headphone jack was because it was an "old" technology that shouldn't be supported anymore. Instead, Apple touts lightening headphone jacks are "better".

If lightening headphone jacks are "better" why is there a headphone jack on the new MacBook Pro which is their "flagship" laptop? Shouldn't there be a lightening port instead? I mean, if a user of the iPhone 7 went and purchased expensive lightening headphones they can't even use it on the MacBook Pro.

So, Apple...which is it?

Apple doesn't want you to buy wired headphones at all.

They said it was removed to free up precious room inside the iPhone, and I guess that makes sense.

Again, yet they replaced that space with something that really wasn't needed...a Taptic Engine, which takes up a lot more space. Did the mechanical Home button fail that much, that they chose this instead?

Somebody correct me if i'm wrong, doesn't the Taptic Engine allow for buttons to be solid state, but still give a simulated feeling of it being mechanical? Therefore, allowing for less moving parts inside the iPhone.

Correct. And this supposedly removes a weak part of the phone - the button. Still missing the audio connector however...

Apple's end goal is WIRELESS for iPhones. Lightning for another year or two is just a stop-gap between now and their end goal. After wireless technology further matures, then they can just drop that port too.

Very unlikely. Even with a wireless future, the option to connect not just to headphones but a computer (or other peripherals) without a wireless/Bluetooth connection will exist for many business (and in-flight) reasons.

The lightning port exists, and will exist (despite the USB-C 3.1 being the standard) for revenue purposes, for as long as they can get manufacturers to create lightning products.

Of course wireless is the future.

Apple were involved in the development of USB C, they wanted a universal port and indeed have adopted it faster than anyone else with the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

This is just another thread of ******** conspiracy nonsense by the people in foil hats, the lightning port was apples answer to a reversible slimline port in their handheld devices when USB C was still in development it will be phased out with time.

They have no interest in licensing their ports and connectors it's just not worth their effort and the issues with others poorly made cables and connectors.

The wired connection you are talking about is USB C with tb3 preferably in all their devices. The in flight stuff was never about interference with planes that has been debunked as nonsense for decades.

Are you speaking as a representative of Apple? (serious question, sarcasm not intended)

Your statement "Of course wireless is the future" has no relevance to what I posted - I am not disputing that statement at all. Also, calm down on the "everything is a conspiracy" train.

To add, I wasn't even replying to the OP, but to a specific post which seemed to incline (unless I misread it) that in the future the phone might have NO ports. I believe it will always have one port, be it USB-C or Lightning (at the moment I'd wager it will remain lightning but it might become USB-C).

Also regarding the in-flight stuff, I wasn't referring to interference with planes... People might run out of battery on wireless devices, so may prefer to have wired back-ups. If you are on a long flight, you may not want to rely on bluetooth earphones.

People might also find transfer speeds are a lot quicker via wired (and reliable), compared to having to rely on bluetooth. I can say from experience, iTunes is a nightmare and much slower when connecting via wireless compared to wired.

There are also many other arguments to have at least 1 port on a phone, regarding many peripherals which cannot connect wirelessly, either due to hardware limitation or due to loss of function and/or quality.

No I'm speaking as some one without an axe to grind about things changing it seems to me that is the main issue with all this utter nonsense and the ridiculous conspiracy nonsense being spouted on here.

Apple have a vision for their devices minimal ports of the highest quality and everything that can being wireless. This has been obvious with the devices they have made over the last decade.

This seems to be an issue for many people who just don't like change, and they seem to have to justify their resistance to change with silly conspiracy theories.

Well stop spouting unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about ports being a gravy train Apple is pushing when the opposite is the clear purpose of their design decisions.

All wireless phones are pretty damn close if you ask me 4-5 years away before we see the first one whoever makes it.

A point on inflight and things running out of charge but how long before all planes have charging points??

And yes it is quicker through wired connections currently but that is rapidly changing, I refer you to my 4-5 years prediction earlier.

As this is a MacBook Pro thread lets leave the phone chat to another forum but as far as the MacBook Pro goes you get 4 of the fastest ports you can get and you can plug your headphones in, I can't see how this is a problem, nor how that makes Apple liars.

The 3.5 mm jack is more than just about headphones for the laptops, which makes it different to the iPhone 7 situation. [...] if it was just to plug in headphones, the port wouldn’t be necessary. However, the 3.5 mm jack remains in the product as pros have “studio monitors, amps and other pro audio gear that do not have wireless solutions”.

But that’s only Schiller Scheisse, of course ;-)

Haha zero pro audio guys use the 3,5mm for professional gear. If even on a laptop we use external audio interfaces. Not a consumer level onboard audiocard of a laptop.
