1) Why do people always take a rumor of product X to mean that Apple is not also working on product Y?

2) "Post-PC" era does not mean that PCs are obsolete or no longer used, just that they are no longer the singular focus of the computing market.

Well, a lot of people including Apple, claim the desktop is dead. This is the first time in recent Apple history that their tower, formerly PowerMac, hasn't been revamped in two years and [supposedly] won't be until 2013. Not to mention displays that cater mainly to their notebook line (their previous ACD's were fantastic CCFL LCD's that came in three sizes and worked with all their systems; now you need USB/Mini-display port extension cables just to reach their Mac Pro unless I want my 12-Core Pro sitting on my desk with my 2 24" LED LCD's).

Apple has focused less on their professional lines as mobile devices are cheaper and hook consumers with iTunes only iOS app's, ebooks, movies, etc. Businesses still need the power, upgradeability and convenience of on-site repairs with towers. Apple has become greedy; they've shifted to iOS devices and cheaper notebooks (and lawsuits, I'd love to be an Apple attorney, woo-hoo!), leaving the professionals who make a living off OS X/towers in the dust. I recall Jobs and Ives stating the design/product comes first, and its success leads to profit. Now, it seems profit dictates products. This may work for a while, but it runs contrary to what made Apple a success: leading the industry based on innovation. Focusing more on profit will only bit ya in da arse ;).

Because a 12-year old can edit a movie on their iPad or MacBook doesn't mean the industry has changed, it means the software has become less pro-centric as with FCPX and more consumer-centric. Why are so many studios using FCP7 or moving to Avid or Windows systems? As Jobs himself stated, "their opinion is no longer needed". Sucks for us, great for Apple shareholders, but how many billions in cash is enough???

It seems we've gone from Steve Jobs' quadrant 1 to what it may be presently:

Anyone else thinks it's bad that apple is making more and more different products?

Until now, their product lines were really clear about what is what.
1 ipad, 1 macbook air for each size, 1 macbook pro for each size etc.
Now it's all messed up.
It's nothing bad, but tbh, who would buy the simple macbook pro when they can choose between air and retina pro, depending on their budget?

Non-retina is being phased out. All laptops will be retina within 2 years.

I'd throw a wild guess and say next year they'll drop all non-retina Pro's from the market, making only Airs and Pro's available, and the biggest sell point would be the retina display.

As long as its cheaper than the 15" Retina model, and still supports 2-3 external displays, I'll be buying.

Looking to replace an overly powerful Mac Pro tower with a portable that can run my two 24" displays. Whilst the current 15" model can do it, the price makes it not worth it. Hopefully the 13" will be a bit cheaper!

Don't knock it to much, it's actually pretty decent for integrated graphics!
It runs gta SA pretty well on max settings!

Whilst I agree with you, GTA SA works on pretty much any graphics card. It's an 8 year old game for goodness sake. Pretty much all games that old will work fine on it.

Realistically you should be checking GTAIV on it. It works on a Cider port on my mac pro, you can build your own cider ports for pretty much all Windows games (and apps).

Try a more modern game if benchmarking ;)

(Note: I'm a huge fan of the GTA series, San Andreas and Vice City in particular, but its hardly a heavy game on graphics)

Are computers released in the apple educational store simultaneously with the regular online store?

Apple's website has removed the iPhone 5 as the center of attention as of yesterday. Amazing that it was only released a few weeks ago and is now just another product.

Which can only mean... that they are going to release something new.

I could give you the link to the Apple Store if you'd like ..

No thanks, you see my situation is the first year or so I couldn't afford one and opted for the new iPad instead but over the past handful of months or so I've been waiting for the next gen release. Not going to buy a old outdated machine at this point.

Because this is the news the macheads deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

Where's the imac?

Exactly right on both points, but I'd also add that whether computer enthusiasts (and that includes me--still don't get what all the uproar is about mobile) like it or not, the excitement in computing nowadays is in mobile and has been for some time. Cranking out Macs is old hat for Apple and doesn't get them half the buzz a new iPhone or iPad can generate. From a marketing perspective, it makes almost no sense to emphasize computers at this point.

----------

iMac is dead to Apple.

No, it isn't. Apple makes an incredible amount of money off the Mac. Nothing in the Mac line-up is dead. It's just not where the consumer excitement is anymore.

Discrete GPU or this is just a Retinized and pricier 13" Air. Discrete GPU, please!
