If this is true, then I am disappoint about the screen resolution. The 13 inch air has a resolution of 1440 x 900 while the pro is only 1280x800. Why give the newer high end 13 the lower of the two?

I relize that that the resolution is doubled for the retina display. But they are doubling 1280x800 to get 2560x1600 instead of 1440x900 to get 2880x1800.

For a pro machine the lower resolution is really a big trade off. One could argue that they are doing this to make the 15in more attractive... though it also in some ways makes the air more attractive. Heck, 1280x800 is only marginally higher then the 11in Air (height only).

I have been waiting for the 13 since the retina was announced... if this is what is released, i am going to be sorry i didn't just get the 15.... or maybe i'll just keep the 13in air.

Anyone else thinks it's bad that apple is making more and more different products?

Until now, their product lines were really clear about what is what.
1 ipad, 1 macbook air for each size, 1 macbook pro for each size etc.
Now it's all messed up.
It's nothing bad, but tbh, who would buy the simple macbook pro when they can choose between air and retina pro, depending on their budget?

The retina versus non-retina lines has to just be a transition phase. Next year the power consumption will be lowered and the graphics cards will be improved and everything will be retina screens. Apple will consolidate its lines. In any case, I bet Apple sells enough of all of these lines to give them plenty of economies of scale.

It's just temporary until:

I think it will be less of an issue in the future when Retina displays are cheaper and it will become a standard across all computers.

Then they'll phase out the optical drive MBPs like they did with the white MacBook after the Airs came down in price.

I'm hoping for a discrete GPU with a quad core CPU but I highly doubt it will happen. If it does then I'll take out my credit card!

Yup:
- iPad mini
- 13" retina MBP
- thinner lighter iMac
- Mac Mini

While I'd love to see them get rid of the "chin" on an updated iMac, who cares (other than spec sheet humping fanboys looking for message board fodder) about the thickness and weight of the iMac?

Is there a vast new market of consumers who heretofore have not purchased an iMac simply because it is too thick and/or too heavy for their desk?

I get why someone might not purchase the 27" iMac, due to its height and width... but that's why they have the 21.5" model as an option.

Yep. If Apple doesn't give this discrete GPU treatment, then I'd rather wait for the Haswell 13" Air.
You are looking at GT3 on a SoC-like chip with some on-package eDRAM. Lets just hope Intel can manage to squeeze a SATA 6 Gbps controller on there too. Haswell looks great but my Macbook is on its last legs and Windows 8 is coming.

$1499 starting price, right? :D

Since SSDs have slightly gone down in price, I hope it doesn't cost $500 to go from 256GB to 512GB and such.

Macbook Pro 13" Base $1,199 (Dual Core i5) $1465.592551
MacBook Pro 15" Base $1,799 (Quad Core i7) $2,199 1.222345748% Increase

So with a smaller screen and slower processors and other cheaper components with the same 22% price increase the 13" should be $1465 and change but since it does have cheaper components it should be $1399 MAX

believe what you want about this information, but i went to the local comet store (UK) to buy a retina display macbook pro (was 15% off!) and spoke to the guy there. he said they aren't getting in anymore imacs for 3-4 weeks as the update is coming out. he didn't know about specs but could only confirm there is a new model on the way.

Which is the same price as the high-end 15" non-retina.

The high-end 13" non-retina is $1499. If the pricing scheme is the same on the 13" as on the 15", then it should be $1499.

I just think that price is too low b.c then it will definitely eat into the sales of high end airs.

Yeah, keep dreaming, tdream.

$1799 base model. Guaranteed. 128gb ssd, 4gb ram.

:apple:

I disagree. Base: 8 GB ram, 256 ssd. either 1499 or 1599. That's based off the fact that the 15" retinas are $200-300 *less* expensive than a similarly specced classic MBP.

Unfortunately, that comparison suggests the 13" rMBP will have a dual-core processor with integrated graphics.

Although unlikely, if they can't get the thermals to support both quad-core and discrete graphics, perhaps they can offer an either/or choice like they do with the mini.

I agree man it is killing me I've seriously been waiting to get a Mac (iMac) for almost 2 years

No thanks, you see my situation is the first year or so I couldn't afford one and opted for the new iPad instead but over the past handful of months or so I've been waiting for the next gen release. Not going to buy a old outdated machine at this point.

I share your frustration about the lack of an iMac release in 500+ days but you can't be serious that you bought an iPad in place of an iMac? None of the main applications I use on OS X even run on an iPad!

Yes, good post. To have a super sharp 1280x800 is not as good as having the 1400x900 Air. the 13" Air screen looks great. The Air will be much lighter and cheaper too.

If 13" rMBP has better processor it doesn't matter, processor will be hammed trying to feed the retina displaying the huge font of 1280x800. lol

Just saying that Apple is going to release something new for sure, considering their iPhone 5 has been taken off their main page.

Not sure what you are talking about. When I go to www.apple.com, I see "iPhone 5 - the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone."

Are computers released in the apple educational store simultaneously with the regular online store?

Yep - I still use my edu account. You get something like 1 desktop and 1 portable per year.

I last used it on the MacPro in 2010 and it was on there the exact same time as the standard store.

This was on the UK one, but I'd imagine its the same for all countries with edu programs.
