if the new mbp are like airs and dont allow for regular sized ssds or discrete gpu then i wont be buying one and my 2011 mbp will be my last macbook as i use this as my primary machine

um, and how many BR DVD rips can you fit on that 256gb SSD?

No thanks.

My MB Pro has a big SATA drive for storage, and a modest boot SSD where the optical used to be. Unbelievably fast. I get by without the optical (still have an external for burning and ripping) but SSD's just aren't where they need to be, price-per-gb to become primary storage for anyone with a lot of video or digital images. Which is um, a large target group of MB Pro users...no?

Oh, and leave the ethernet please. Wired is still inherently superior for devices other than tablets and smartphones.

I mean, how much more portable do you need something than the current lineup? Come on.

256GB is fine for work and I work in Video/HD at a post house. There are plenty of eternal drives that are fast and small that you can carry with you in your MBPro bag.

We've moved to almost all external storage for projects because that is how they are delivered to us. We copy the assets to our machines, we do the job, and when the job is completed days or weeks later, we then put it back on the external drive and put it on a shelf.

In fact, our library has gone from tape to almost all external HDs sitting on shelves or with their account managers and we require the client to supply a drive for their project if they want it archived..otherwise they have to bring a drive in and they take their project back with them and it's not our responsibility anymore.

The current 'chunky' design can barely handle the heat, how can the thin case handle the heat of the same internals?

They won't have the same internals....new design and technology. That's what happens each year.

I don't really see why they would make a MBP with a tapered design. The only way I see that happening is if the MBA and MBP lines merged into a single Macbook line, with 11, 13, 15, and 17 inch models. Or maybe they just drop the 17" altogether.

IMO the MBP should drop optical and hard disk drives and keep a rectangular profile. It can then drop to probably about a third as thin, but the extra space over the air could be used for discrete graphics (in all models) and extra battery. Also it can have a few extra ports.

You can't call it a pro without a discrete gpu
Macbook Pro 13" for the past 3 or so years?

Too soon. Give it at least 1 more year, when SSD prices come down enough to make them cost effective enough to entirely do away with HDDs. I personally don't like having my RAM soldered to the MoBo, or having to pay ridiculous prices to Apple for upgrading it or the drive capacity.

This is great news for me. As a web designer who dabbles with web development the current MacBook Air offering meets all of my requirements apart from screen resolution. If Apple were to create a 15" MacBook Air with a so-called "retina" display, I may as well start throwing money at the screen now.

Ivy bridge, flash storage for the main drive, replace the ODD with a second HDD, DISCRETE GPU, no glossy screens (semi-glossy like the air would be fine), and Apple can have my money.

although im all for a thinner macbook pro and updated screen i dont think turning everything into a macbook air is the answer. If you look at the pc ultrabooks they are not taking off really. they kinda spiked and now everyones seen it before. I think eventually this ultrabooks "fad" will pass. I dont think its wise for apple to go that route and focus on a design that is like a loud firecracker. it gets your attention but after youve seen it before its nothing special. I think eventually if they go this route folks will move away from this design in favor of expandability to either another mac or a change to a windows device. I believe air has its place but as a separate line.

Dear Apple,

Please add a 5th size at 19" or 20"

Having owned a PowerBook 17", PowerBook 12", and now a MacBook Air 11" I want to go really go extreme. Gigantic screen size, impossibly thin.

Agree with SSD disk space gap

I have a 2010 13" Air (Ultimate as it has been called) and it is clearly the best notebook I have ever owned! I actually use it as my primary computer. The only shortcoming for me is the lack of disk space. 256GB is just not enough.

I have been a consumer of iTunes movies for years and now I cannot take them all with me. Apple has no iCloud solution for movies, so this is a problem for any users similar to me.

Running iTunes from an external HD is too much of a kluge for me. I have tinkered with the idea of going with the 3rd party upgrade for a 480GB SSD , but it costs too much $$$

I hope they include options for greater storage... An idea might be to include multiple SSD slots.

I just upgraded from a 15" MacBook Pro (late 2008) to a 13" MacBook Air (mid-2011) and I can tell you that this is absolutely where things are heading.

First up, the screen resolution is the same (1440x900) even though it's a 13" screen vs a 15".

The processors are a lifetime apart. My 2008 MBP was a Core 2 Duo BTO at 2.8GHz. The 2011 Air is a Core i5 1.7 (which bursts up to 2.2 or 2.3?)

I was initially concerned about heat, as my MBP often ran hot when transcoding video or handling big tasks, but as the guy at the Store pointed out to me, with no moving parts, Airs generate a lot less heat than the Pros.

This thing benchmarks at roughly 1.5x higher than the MBP, and in my real-world usage over the past month I can say it's honestly snappier and faster, if not the same, as my MBP.

Where it wins hands down however is in portability and battery life.

Instant-On is simply amazing. And the battery life blows the MBP out of the water. Knowing you can get through at least half your day untethered opens up a whole new range of possibilities.

Funny thing is, I was holding out for the longest time for a 15" Air. Took me a while to realize they had already released it: they just made it a little smaller.

Chances are I'm going to get one of the 15" when they come out. I am hoping for the option of a matte screen and large amount of internal storage, but beyond that I'm pretty flexible. If it has an SSD and HD, I'd be very happy since my lappy is my primary machine (currently a first-gen AluMacBook).

I tried trimming my life down to 256gb but it just won't fit. I need big internal storage. Maybe two SSD slots?

Instead of a second HDD, you're most likely going to have more space for battery and a larger capacity SSD.

I'm torn about not having the ODD built in to a laptop. I would need to get an external CD/DVD Burner, although it could last more than one laptop. On the minus side, what if you need the ODD and there's no place to set it down next to the laptop?

I think I have been waiting since the 9400/320M era for someone to make a stock notebook without an optical drive but with a mSATA SSD + mechanical disk and discrete graphics.

Samsung and Apple come really close but they end up being noisy, nuclear piles on load. Other times I look at the M11x but balk at the panel quality.

I will keep waiting and using my ancient Macbook. h.264 and Flash are taking their toll though.

GPUs

All the discussion about the MBA not having discrete GPUs, what will likely happen is that Apple will put in discrete GPUs across the entire lineup and then you don't have to choose between an Air and a Pro for the GPU. Initially optical media will be handled with an external Superdrive, but I have one, and rarely use it. I could have lived without it, but it's nice to have.

I hope the new MacBook Pros still have DVD drives. I know people will say "but waahhhh I never use mine!" Well, what about the plenty of people who's laptops are their portable DVD players?

I'm sure the MacBook Pros won't merge with the MacBook Airs as the Pros aren't designed to be thin, so the same sacrifices won't be made with the Pros as is made with the Airs. For example, MacBook Pro hard drives will still be min 500GB.

Its 2012. Good luck in your dreams mate. Dvd drive no chance.

I hope this means it will be possible to get a MacBook Air with a matte screen - finally!

I don't really believe it though.. The pros are selling well as they are and some people just need the power. It's much more of a desktop replacement than the Air will be, and I don't see them cramming a GPU even in a 15 or 17".

Personally I'd guess for a slimmer, more air-like Pro range, with GPUs even in the 13" model (if they even keep it along), and with most of the ports, such as Ethernet, preserved.
