While I want to macbook to change, the macbook air design is almost as old....something new apple!

Also, I don't think ditching traditional 2.5" HDD's for proprietary, low-capacity SSD sticks like the air is going to win over power users. I've replaced the drives on every macbook I've owned because apple's 2x-3x pricing for storage is absolutely ridiculous.

You can still buy a delorean too ....

This is the dumbest thing I ever heard... Disc based media for "Pro" use is needed. And you're argument is null. "You can still buy a delorean" that's no where near as close to what he's trying to say!

Floppys were killed by CD Rom cause it was a better way to do things and you couldn't put full movies on floppy disks! don't even try lying and saying you could have! So DVD's, Blu-Ray, and CD's are still the current media. If you are going to spend a ton of money on a "Pro" machine, it should have the functionality. If anything, putting BluRay super drives would be a good idea, not everyone in the country has internet, let alone speeds that they can put up with downloading huge programs to their computers!

Completely agree with you! It's not a "Pro" device if you lose space!

i feel the opposite, i prefer the black bezel over the silver one. ^^ all silver is boring. To each their own however

I also greatly prefer the black bezel, it makes images on screen look better and is less distracting. Hopefully they stick with that and keep Ethernet and Firewire, but otherwise I am thrilled with the idea of a redesigned MBP.

Ever heard of usb?

yes please! I think a 17" mba with 8/16 GB RAM and 256/512/768 GB SSD running cool and quiet would be nice...

(then again, I might just get the tiny 11" and have a mini & 27" TBD at home instead)

pro is just a marketing term guys... it means as much as the i in imac

whining about the macbook pro not being 'pro' anymore is akin to complaining that the original macbook was never really a book in the first place

deep breath

My only possible complaint about this is a question about the graphics capability of these types of products for digital content creators, CAD users and film/video editors in other words most of the "Pro" users that buy Macs. Even though I still like the idea of having a built-in optical drive I can live without it since external drives of all types can be so small anymore. Considering Apple graphics driver division have never been the sharpest tool in the shed will further compacting the physical design force even weaker graphics hardware into the laptop? Also, with Laptops being the best selling computers for years at this point I'm hoping that user upgradable GPUs will become more standard relatively soon and I hope this new thin design doesn't completely throw that out the window.

Looks good and consistent to me; additional GPU power for those how need to be attached via TB; price drop will occur with increased demand and competition.

I could also imagine the the current MBP 15" and 17" survive and getting a HiRes screen while the extended MBA family keep current screen types. Maybe MBP becomes MBH for MacBook HD. Partially wild guessing.

The optical drive needs to be dropped. It's nothing but dead weight for most. There will be tons of howls by the vocal minority when Apple does this, I am sure. I vividly recall when Apple dropped the internal modem in the very first MacBook Pro. Same thing happened. Luddites exist, even among Apple users.

That said...

I do expect any new "pro" laptop to continue to have a full array of internal ports. I undersand TB is an all-in-wonder, but TB's potential has yet to be fully realized by peripheral companies. Also dongles are evil. They take up space -- and even 1sq in is valuable to a road warrior, and are something else to keep up with. Bleech.

So it will be interesting to see what happens here. Also I know video pros are gonna demand discrete graphics. Apple understands this, so not selling a 15" laptop w/ discrete graphics will be a ginormous clue as to where Apple is truly headed.

Late add: Heh. I see I've attracted some neg feedback already. Probably from people who still have an AOL email address.

As my secondary computer (primary is 27" iMac) my 2008 13" Al MacBook is using 300 GB of 500 GB disk space and typically uses 5GB of the 8 GB RAM. I also currently just get by with 2 USBs (tablet + some custom hardware) and wired Ethernet. I can live without the Optical drive, however:

the current 13" MacBook Air would be strangled by my current 3 year old MacBook usage. What hope do I have if Apple goes all Air? Will there be any affordable model with 512GB SSD and will 8GB RAM be available? I expect that if Apple goes all Air this Spring I'll make a "last time buy" of the current MBP and hope things improve by 2015-2016.

As long as it has a very nice GPU in there, I'm a happy camper.

Actually, as long as they don't sacrifice performance for the MBA-style design, I'd be happy. Optical drives are dinosaurs and need to die off, not to mention an external USB optical drive can be had for $25-$35. The performance aspect is my only real concern with this update.

And the built-in SSD thing is a terrible, terrible idea. I've never been more excited and terrified for an update.

This is shaping up to look a lot like the FCP X vs FCP 7 debate that still rages on. It'll be interesting to see what direction Apple decides to go in.

No way Apple will make the whole line of laptops like the Air, I know to many people that use the 15 inch MacBook Pro as a primary machine, myself included and would go nuts with solid state drives and no optical drive. My music collection alone wouldnt fit on the high end MacBook Air!

Apple's answer to both. iTunes and iTunes Match. Put your music library on an external drive, do iTunes match, stream when you are remote so you don't fillup your wickedly fast SSD drive.

"But, but, but I am often without Internet while remote and wanting to listen to obscure music in my collection!" OK, OK, you are an 'edge case'. Buy an iPod Classic.

The DVD's are going away dude.

Don't worry about storage, Apple plan to sell you some nice cloud storage.

No thanks.

Cloud storage is not a practical solution at this time. Download speeds are too slow, Internet connectivity is not ubiquitous (LTE might help with that, if Apple includes it in their notebooks), and ISPs still cap data allowances and charge for overages. That situation, in fact, is actually getting worse.

If a MBP is your primary machine (which it is for many people), SSDs + cloud storage just isn't practical or affordable. Apple is still charging, what, $1000 extra for a 512GB SSD?

Blu Ray is no longer a part of the equation. It never really was to begin with.

Of course it isn't, because you can't have it.
And if you can't have it, it can't be part of the future.

Thank doG for hundreds TBs of junk HD movies on the iCloudy
and 5GB data caps. Lord, what a laugh.
Unbelievably hoodwinked and happy for it.

Yup, it's criminal.

$212 with a quick Google shopping search. Its ridiculous.

Ever heard of usb?

What about USB? If you mean buy an external DVD Rom, and run it through USB, I will say it again. Why is it "Pro" if it doesn't come with a simple DVD Drive? And if you mean USB flash drives and whatever, that doesn't help when I have clients who want their songs on a CD. We aren't talking about Vinyl here, every new car still comes with a damn CD player!

I do think it's about time for the DVD drive to go. I've had my MacBook Pro for 30 months now and I think I've used the DVD drive fewer than 10 times. Whereas the increased weight has causeed the aluminum case to get pretty banged up.

I hope the new MacBook Pros still have DVD drives. I know people will say "but waahhhh I never use mine!" Well, what about the plenty of people who's laptops are their portable DVD players?

I'm sure the MacBook Pros won't merge with the MacBook Airs as the Pros aren't designed to be thin, so the same sacrifices won't be made with the Pros as is made with the Airs. For example, MacBook Pro hard drives will still be min 500GB.

What's a DVD, and where do you buy those ? :)

Who wants to carry around a USB drive? Try putting your Itunes movies on USB. People buy pros for making music, Movies or editing images, USB would not work for that.
I got my Pro do develop for iOS and would not want a small drive.

Apple has a good amount of 13" air versus 13" MBP sales data, so I think they should extend that trend. Keep the traditional 15" MBP, but also produce one with the CPU and GPU would one would expect out of a full featured notebook (>35W CPU, >25W GPU) but remove the ODD and relegate it to onboard NAND for the hard drive. Then the consumer can decide.

Hey now, the profit margin they get from ripping people off in storage (and ram) allows their stripped computers to be as competitive with pc's as they are...

All BTO sites (Dell swears by it) rip you off on ram and HDDs.

It just makes the market better for people like us who will upgrade it on our own.

I just hope the switch happens slowly... I want at LEAST an Ivy 17" MBP that still has the expresscard port so I can use an audio interface AND FW800 drives without dropping my raid drives to FW400 speeds... and without buying that stupid $100 sonnet adapter for an adapter

You have clients ? Want to be a bit more professional ?

Try using these.... Price:$3.79 each. I would hope you are making enough from your client to afford that ! The price of a small Latte'

And its classy in Leather ! My advise , buy in bulk. Like 40 at a time.

if they remove the optical drive would that mean the price will be lower then it is now? If it isn't lower then it is now then it's a complete rip off.
