Haven't Apple confirmed that the iPad won't do multi-tasking? If that's right, I can't see it coming out on the iPhone any time soon. If a multi-tasking OS 4.0 was imminent, I would have thought they'd have held off the iPad launch until then.

Sure would be nice. I really want to listen to internet radio when I run using RunKeeper. The only way to do that is by multitasking.
Have no doubt! I do this on android, it's really great thing. I always have 10-15 apps running simultaneously without any problem

Cool, that means sooner or later the iPad will have multitasking as well!

On that other hand, it could mean that, for a while, the iPhone is actually a more advanced device than the iPad, which would be sort of odd.

I REALLY want a central place for all notifications. Something like Android has. Pull down on the status bar and you can see any and all notifications from an app. It would be nice to view and respond to those notifications without leaving the app you're in also (multi-tasking). This would also mean the status bar would have to stay on the screen instead of disappearing when an app is running. Hopefully a little bigger screen on the next iPhone to accomodate that. The ability to view app information on the lockscreen would be great too.

If would be funny if they put it in there and then people hardly ever used it.

Classic :apple: marketing. Limit a device, then tell the consumers you do not need this and that feature because it will ruin the experience and then years later introduce the same features that the consumers wanted since day one and tell them its some the consumer cannot live without and :apple: has "fixed" the problems of past to make it worthwhile for it to release, run and consumer ready now.

This is how :apple: theology works. Bring your previous customers and new customers to an elementary learning level on an :apple: device and slowly include and implement features that the user wanted or required, however telling said user anything may it be lies or the truth to keep them shut.

:apple: is the personification of a parent. Like it or not its true and they have been doing this for years. This also adds to the bottom line.

this is the most exciting news i've heard all year!! iphone desperately needed a UI overhaul. I really hope the declutter the notification system, make it less obtrusive like facebook notifications or something. theres so many tweaks that are needed to spice up the iphone software. multitasking shoulda been here last year.

I hope apple comes through this time, I dont like waiting another 6 months!

There really isn't much to be worried about in terms of battery. Its not like someone is going to force you to run multiple apps. Those of us who are conscious of the fact that running apps will use battery (and I would think anyone posting here would be) would simply use multi-tasking as necessary within the limits of the battery.

Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, but it is no understatement to say the battery life could/should be improved. I hope this is a serious consideration for the next incarnation.

My problem is that I like to max the capabilities of the things I have, multitasking would be something I would definitely take advantage of. But I need my phone for work; it would be nice not to have to charge my iPhone once or twice every 24hrs like I do currently.

You know if they would just add breadcrumbs to the OS I wouldn't even want multitasking. It would provide the illusion of multitasking by eliminating the need to press the home button to go back to last thing you were doing. How about a double-finger swipe down to go back to the last app/thing you were doing and a double-finger swipe up to go forward? I don't care if the app has to relaunch...most apps remember the last thing you were doing. This way apps are still running singularly, but you get the benefits of switching back and forth. Also apple could add something to the SDK that would allow developers to do a quick launch (ignore splash-screens and such) if it was launched from said breadcrumb vs. from the home screen.

Apple please implement this idea and send me a check :)

Problem is the term "multitasking" does not have sufficient resolution to discern "tiny and relevant background operation" (a la Skype being able to detect incoming calls while another app is running) vs. "wasting inane amounts of cycles for self-important activity not in the user's best interests" (a la always downloading & buffering video ads to thrust upon the user at the earliest opportunity). There is no way, either via OS or user's choice, to throttle/manage background tasks on this easily overloaded platform.

Well, if I load an app it may decide itself to run in the background, sucking cycles & space & power, and I may not know which app is guilty of wrecking my "user experience". On the desktop I run into too many apps which insist on background activity when it's not appropriate or wanted; that's tolerable on a 3GB RAM 3GHz quad-core platform, but not on a machine barely bigger than a credit card.

I'm pretty sure if Apple adds multitasking to the iPhone platform it will not be just like a desktop OS. Apps won't be able to make 'sleeper' threads willy-nilly like with an unmonitored desktop os. Most likely the user will have to approve of the apps backgrounding (like with push notifications). And even then the user will always know exactly what is running in the background.

Remember that Apple seems to be trying to redefine how the user experience of a computer with the iPad, so I believe giving apps full control over a users device will be out the door. Looking through Activity Monitor or Task Manager to find an out of control process on a Desktop OS is not something the average user should have to worry about.

All I want for WWDC is....

I just want a one-tap way to Google a phone number from the Recents list. And if Apple isn't playing with Google, some other search engine. Hell, Apple is building the uber data center in North Carolina, so why not implement the uber-reverse number search thing for iPhone customers who pay a lot of money every month but STILL don't have real caller ID on their phones.

Oh, one more thing, an OLED 17" Macbook Pro would be nice too.

Here's what I'm thinking as a way to do multi-tasking and not killing battery life/smoothness of other apps. Apps will have a choice of two different ways to act when in a multi-tasking mode.

1. Full running - This is the traditional way, where the app is running like normal. Apps going this route would be things like Pandora, Navigon, etc. Basically, apps that require constant processing to accomplish their purpose even when the user isn't looking at them. My guess is most apps wouldn't need to be in this mode.

2. Freeze apps - This is where I see most apps falling. Most apps really don't need to be running while you're not looking at them, so why waste the proc cycles? This could be integrated with push notifications so that if one comes in for a running app, that app can be unfrozen in the background, allowed to update, then refrozen. Then, when the user comes back to that app, it's updated with the new notification waiting for them. Examples would be things like Facebook, Twitter apps, and IM apps.

Thoughts?

Flash, or the lack thereof.

No for that I have a MBP that handles the job quite well. It also saves me some $$$ by not buying the iPad for which I still believe the market space or its intended uses is not clearly defined.

:apple: played the same game with the original iPod.

1. It will only be for Mac users, then it said Windows users are invited.

2. iPod it only a music player and no one will need more than 2-8GB of music in they pocket. Reference to iPod Nano. Then introduces higher capacity iPod Nano and even higher capacity iPod Classics.

3. iPod is not a video player, people do not want it, then releases iPod Photo and then video support.

4. People do not want to watch TV and Movies on an iPod, then releases iPod Touch.

5. People do not need BlueTooth headphones on iPod since audio quality is terrible, then releases iPhone OS X 3.0 for iPod Touch with BlueTooth audio limited support.

6. People do not need an FM Runer when they have thousands of music selection in they hands/pocket, then release the current generation of iPod Nano with FM Tuner.

7. The story with :apple: continues......

Like it or not you are being stringed along by :apple:, if you do not like it do not buy into it, if you do buy into it learn to live with the limitations or find other hardware solutions or software solutions to jailbreak your hardware.

Jobs is giving us permission to like multi-tasking now. Go out and spread the word.

its still just rumor and I am guessing it will only work on the new iPhone. Guessing the new iPhone will have a multicore processor in it.

This is VERY similar to what I was thinking with my breadcrumbs idea. I think we should mash these two ideas together somehow and send a meeting invite to Steve Jobs so we can pitch the idea. Think he will accept? :)

I could so care less about this feature and I'm sure it matters to a small minority of overall users just like tethering. I'm sure I'll incur the wrath of some on this board for saying sacrilegious things like who cares about multitasking and tethering. Hahaha.

I've got copy and paste and I can move between functions just fine for my needs which I'm sure will be the masses. Once you start making the experience too difficult, it will loose it's appeal. I have a hard enough time trying to make sure my wife and mother in-law not leave multiple pages open in Safari.

The introduction of multitasking will just have the average user mad that their battery life is disappearing so quickly and they won't realize they have a bunch of functions running eating it up.

I think the iPhone power users are a very small minority and many of them have jailbroken and have the feature already.

Just install Backgrounder from Cydia. It does it wonderfully and it's easy to toggle for an app to run in the background, and easy to toggle it to close.

APPLE: Don't re-invent the wheel. Take a bucket of gold, give it to the Backgrounder app maker, take his code, and use it. No problems.

I already background on my iPhone 3GS as well. It's simple, doesn't waste battery AT ALL, and extremely convenient. I'm sure Apple is either going to steal this (why would they pay for it?) or make something better. If they don't, I'm switching to Droid to send a message. I'm sick of having to jailbreak my phone for Google Voice, backgrounding, and tethering.

I am sure they will find something, they always do! Hell if you look at the first eight posts, someone is already bitching about the battery life....

Lets hope there is multitasking!

People will always complain about the battery life, not because people like complaining but because 9 hours using the phone as it was made to be used as is ridiculous.

the only way to fix this issue is make the battery easily removable like any other phone, then carry a spare. They are small.
