I'm guessing the Mini's will follow a similar trend like the big iPads.
The old (current) model will become the cheap version, finally giving everyone their long awaited $199 mini. Unfortunately it will be $229-$249.

That's a shame, I've recommended people to hold off on buying the mini b/c the lack of retina.

It doesn't make sense.
Just retina from the beginning,just one model,A6 + retina + 1GB.

I told ya the mini would FLOP. And it did; now Apple is thinking twice before launching another model.

Yea it totally flopped. It only made up 60% of all apple tablet sales and is cannibalizing ipad 4, but it def. flopped. Go troll somewhere else.

I wonder when "MacRumors" itself, will get tired of all the rumors.

You know, even they have to look at some of these rumors and go...
"Really, another one of THESE... When will all these rumors stop?"

And then they say, "Well, it's a rumor, we should report on it."

And then... they force a smile and the rumor mills churn on....

The name of the website is macrumors, I submit to you that it is not the place to go if you don't want to read about rumors... Just saying...

It would be about the dumbest thing on Earth to not release a retina iPad mini. I'd rather not even see a refresh at all until they have a retina display.

I wouldn't hold off - I'd argue that unless you have remarkable eye sight the smaller size means that retina is less important. I have had a 32GB Mini since March and it's great!

It doesn't need remarkable eyesight to distinguish between the two.

if true, history is just repeating itself....happened with the original iPad.

Only difference I don't think folks were expecting a "retina" display on the iPad 2, but I could be wrong....

Because a 2048 x 1536 screen was considered impossible to include in the iPad, at least at its price point. But Apple did it.

Retina or not, I'm looking to pick up a mini before Xmas.

On my full size iPad I like super high res, but I'm largely indifferent in exchange for smaller, lighter device with good battery life

For me they can wait until 2020. I don't care. iPad Mini doesn't appeal to me. Why would I want something in between an iPhone and a regular iPad :)

Because iPhone is too small to read a book and surf the web, and ipad is too big, heavy and clumsy compared to the ipad mini. I owned all of the above devices and in the end I settled on the mini. Everyone has different priorities. For me size and weight (or lack of it) matters the most.

I'm really not sure how it could get any thinner. I'm holding one right now and when I face it towards a mirror, it looks like a floating screen in my hand. IMO, the mini is doing just fine. I have loved mine since launch day. The focus for fall needs to be on iPhone 5s and MacBook Pro (along with iOS 7 and Mavericks). That is where my money is going.

As an owner of iPad3 Retina, which is now my wife's, couldn't agree more. Mini is just great and the screen is great. Some people may have problems with it, but even me, with not perfect eyesight at all, find it very good.

Had money set aside for the Mini Retina this year, what a shame :(

I bought an iPad 3 on release and upgraded to 4 (waste of time and money) I bought my Wife a mini for Christmas and I instantly fell for it, for me the size and weight outweigh any benefits the 4 has including retina. I sold my 4 ASAP and upgraded to a Mini and have been perfectly happy since :)

I will never go back to a full size iPad so it's either wait for the Retina Mini or maybe go with the next Nexus 7!

The one thing i don't like about Apple is it's tendency to make tiny little steps forward in hardware and OS upgrades, eking out as much life and money out of them while being blinkered to what the competition are doing!

I am mostly ok with the non-retina Mini's screen that I have EXCEPT for one superficial thing: can anyone explain why the screen is darker on the white version than the black? We have one of each and trust me it is, when you hold it side by side. I want the screen when off to be about as black as the bezel, and annoyingly it reminds of the 3GS LCD when off. Why is this?
Your brain is post-processing everything you see to increase contrast and help you spot differences and objects. Depending on the background your perception of color, brightness and shape differs.

Just curious as to whether the screens are actually different because of something technical like light leaks, or if this is yet more Apple intentional work on product differentiation when the time for a retina mini does come.
The screen is the same. It was evolutionary beneficial for early humans to see things a little enhanced, instead of always 100% accurate. What you see is not the light that reaches the eye, but what your brain makes of it.

Ipad Mini Retina

This is interesting. I just recently converted from a PC that was over 4 years old to a macbook 13 inch retina display. I had an ipad 4th gen that I traded in to offset some of the cost because I decided I would instead invest in a mini down the road. For the record, this retina display macbook pro is AMAZING. I literally want to use it just so I can look at the screen sometimes, it's ridiculous. I already had the retina fix with the ipad and my current iPhone 5, but after having this macbook pro for 5 days now, I'm on another level :).

Point is, going back the mini, I am full on board with retina displays to the point that I won't invest any more money unless it is retina. Does that mean that the current displays are awful? No. For me, it's personal preference at this point. Now, I go into the Apple store to play with the mini and sometimes I almost walk out with one. I keep holding back for retina though.

In the end, I do hope they release a retina display mini this year, because in my opinion while they will indeed still sell, to release a non-retina one with a smaller bezel really just doesn't make any sense to me. If it is going to be delayed, just wait until 2014 and instead just release ipad 5 this year. We'll see what happens...
