movies and tv shows available through the air. Imagine being able to watch tv without any wires attached to it. the marvels of technology. One day songs will travel through the air as well. What a time we live in.

LOL, advances! :rolleyes::):D;)

so if, on a whim, i buy a HD movie from the iPhone, when I sync to my mac I'll get the full blow version right?

Why is it that AT&T's shoddy 3G network dictates everyones iPhone experience worldwide? Many 3G networks in Europe are fast, the Asian ones like 3 in HK and SoftBank in Japan are blazing. Even in Canada, as much as it cost us, Rogers' HSPA network consistently gets me 2Mbps+ most of the time, even in very populated areas. If AT&T says Slingbox can't have 3G, then there should be a different version of the app for Americans and everyone else can get one with 3G support.

Because it it not actually about momentary speed but network capacity. If you have a million users who occasionally download apps and songs suddenly live all day streaming videos, the network usage goes up by a BUNCH. Furthermore it increases the number of time-dependent instances.

It makes sense to test consumer usage of a new feature slowly before exposing a thin network to a barrage like that.

I hope we get 7.x speed 3G next year too, but so far, as often as not I am on EDGE still. Are we there yet?

Meh. TV downloads... maaybe... but movies? No thx. Even if speeds get reasonably fast, I'd rather download on my laptop and port it over.

Anyone remember that news that showed up several months ago about the AV cables being pulled of the shelf at Apple stores in lieu of possibly a newer AV cable for iPhone? I'm at work right now so I don't have time to look.

But anyways, think about over-the-air movie and tv downloads and then hooking them to a friend or families tv or hotel tv or whatever to watch them. Maybe even in HD. Pretty good idea, I'd say. ;)

If they are already training Apple store employees, then OS 3.0 will be released very soon. :)
I think it's safe to say that this was the last beta version.

June 8, WWDC: "Oh, and one more thing...." :D

att networks is perfectly capable of streaming television and movies (maybe not if everyone started doing it)...but not everyone has a slingbox..

and the fact that apple has already allowed "Orb Live" to be available in the app store means that their policy about "no video streaming" is just ********.
I am able to watch 78 channels of cable tv over 3g or wifi or even edge (the quality with 3g or higher is great, completely watchable and you can read ticker text easily)..
orb server running on the home pc allows you to share any media type onto your iphone..try it out!

I'm still hoping the iPhone and iPod Touch will be able to be used as a mini Apple TV via a dock so you can watch whatever you want (streaming or on the iPhone) right on your big screen TV.

Apple TV has always felt like a stepping stone.

More like a giant boulder stuck in the ground trapped by 4' of root ball that you have to pull to uncover the greatness that Apple TV should have been from the start.

All I know is that I'd love to watch hulu on my iPhone but that would trump iTunes sales. I'd like to wath free content too after the hundreds I've spent on iTunes.

not happening

hate to disappoint but when i took the 3.0 SGT at work... there were no mentions of direct download for movies or tv episodes...

btw the training is a "60 minute" course.. anyway...

expect this for 3.0:

peer to peer apps over bluetooth for the touch 2nd gen and iPhone
searchlight for all models
in app purchases (already confirmed but yeah)
additional contant syncing to LDAP servers
additional calander syncing options
wifi can remember login to paid wifi hotspots and will have an option to prevent automatic logins to them to prevent unwanted charges
copy, cut, and paste
mms messaging
voice recorder app for iphone and ipod touch 2nd gen with the right earbuds
being able to create or change the itunes account your logged into directly from the touch as opposed to having to sync to the account

An HDMI Dock, with an IR port for the remote, and a "FrontRow" app would be sweet.

Of course you would. This is why palm pre and zune might do so well. Notice now that apple is attempting to mention streaming at the same time all this talk of flash, netflix, hulu is around.

Don't think it will happen as I have stated also, flash (REAL REASON NOT ON IPHONE), = slingbox, hulu, netflix, movie trailers, 90% net content= lost iTunes sales.
Thank goodness that others are doing it. Hope it holds apples hand to the fire.

Same with netbook. Air and MacBook priced wrong so now they either reduce price or release crippeware netbook with month to month data plan. Meanwhile AT&T reduces rate trying to play nice guy = cap as teethering is coming. Hope other providers offer better solutions. Apple needs to be held in a vice for a while and stop focusing in one to one barking dog, fake gucci iphoto and email attachment classes and start focusing on media players (free), flash, computers not built with mobile parts (all are except mac pro) and start releasing stronger computers, graphic cards, and pro apps. Most trainers do not know aperture, fcp, motion and for sure, shake.
Mbp still a great machine but it could be better.

Peace

AT&T appears to be a cash cow, paying 76% of earnings out to shareholders. That doesn't leave much for building a bigger pipe.

Netflix and Hulu

Could this be partly in prep for Hulu and Netflix Watch Instantly apps. I would LOVE to watch Netfix and Hulu streaming in bed or at work, even if it is wifi, on my iPhone!

I hope they'll have free content.

it is the same content as the iTunes Store so while there is some free stuff there is not currently any kind of subscription streaming type gig.

and even if there was a hulu type deal going on you would have ads. so it won't be totally free.

Meh, just give the Hulu app for the iPhone.

they just released a desktop app so it seems like they are thinking such directions for the future

Sounds like apple is finally severing the iPhones reliance to a computer.

yes and no. if you want to risk having your phone break or be stolen and lose all your data and media then you go computerless. cause right now there is no way to back up your phone to a remote service (and when there is it won't likely be free)

Will it be possible to preorder the iPhone at the Apple online store?

doubtful. IF there is a new phone there will be huge lines at the stores and getting those handled and out of the way of computer sales etc (remember this is Apple's big Back to School special time as well) is going to be a top priority. I wouldn't be shocked if there were no online sales for the first month or so.

Yet again, something that should have been allowed over Wi-Fi from the beginning.

i hate to imagine the bug fixing that would have been a heck of a lot harder if all possible features were wide open from day one.

Why is it that AT&T's shoddy 3G network dictates everyones iPhone experience worldwide?

it is my understanding that ATT won their contract via paying some of the R&D costs. that money might be giving them the power to ixnay any features they can't or won't support at this time from appearing on other networks, even outside of the US. why they would care, I don't know. but corporations can be funny things

Release must be not to far after WWDC. Maybe we will get an "available today"

I think that it is very very possible that iphone 3.0 will be avail on the 8th or 9th. why?

well if you assume there will be a new phone in mid july, they might want to avoid the total cock up that was the new phone, the new mobile me, the apps store all on one day from last year. by releasing the 3.0 right away, the hope could be that those that aren't going to update their phone hardware right away will get the software right away and thus ease a tad of the load on the servers that will be straining to handle phone activations

so if, on a whim, i buy a HD movie from the iPhone, when I sync to my mac I'll get the full blow version right?

my guess. it will download the SD version to your phone (cause the HD is total abuse of harddrive space) and flag the HD as an available download for your computer

att networks is perfectly capable of streaming television and movies

Could this be partly in prep for Hulu and Netflix Watch Instantly apps.

keep in mind too that there are legal issues. the deals that places like Hulu have to be able to stream movies and tv to computers might not be written to also allow to mobile devices. they will have to set up a new deal for such. and the studios will have a field day on getting as much money out of those deals as they can.

This has been a complaint in many other countries, namely Japan, where cell phone users don't own a pc and thus couldn't buy a iPhone.

Although Japan has got to be one of the coolest places on earth, I've never been able to see how anybody could get by on a cell phone as a "computer replacement." Granted, many Japanese mobile phones have a s**tload of fancy features such as TV tuners and 12-megapixel cameras, but still...I couldn't imagine life without a computer.

TV shows eh?

Wow, great news, now iPhone can get TV shows and movies straight off of iTunes. Hooray for the US. For Europeans and other countries, we're still waiting for even 1 effing TV show or movie to make its appearance on our iTunes stores. Wonderful, these rights issues.

Movies in UK

It's on the 3.0 latest build though not yet had time to test if it's over 3G. 9to5 looks interesting (!). MMS up an running too.

I actually enjoy watching shows/movies on my iPhone, so this is a fairly good news. Perhaps to make things even more enjoyable Apple will lower their movie download prices as well?
