their stuff is made in china, i'd rather buy my iphone at the apple store where the iphone is made in the USA

You're incredibly ignorant.

iPhones are assembled in China. It doesn't matter where you buy it. Look on the back of any iPhone. "Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China"

Apple contracts manufacturing of the iPhone to a Taiwanese company called Foxconn.

Even if they were, the iPhones at Walmart would still be assembled in the USA. Walmart wouldn't be producing them, just selling them.

Let me sum that post up in one word for our ignorant friend there:

FAIL.

The elitist attitude exhibited from many posters here is truly sad. So much misinformation is spread here about Wal-Mart it borders on the ridiculous. I realize the company I work for isn't perfect. There are many great things about Wal-Mart for which I am quite proud. My father works for Wal-Mart. He's been with the company 35 years. He has no college education and started out as a stocker. He has now been a store manager for more than twenty years and makes 200k plus a year. This is with no college education. There are thousands of examples of this within the company.

I have been an Assistant Manager for almost 5 years and will make 55k this year in Oklahoma where the cost of living is very low, in other areas they give adjustments in pay based on cost of living. Even if I were to stay in my current position I would continue to receive raises for many more years before I reached the top end of the pay scale. Good pay at Wal-Mart is attainable. Yes, many of our positions are unskilled labor and pay is on the lower end, this is true for most every unskilled position people get hired for. All you super cool people who love Target should know that our total pay and benefits package has been rated above theirs by companies that rate retailer pay and benefits.

However, you can work a regular stocking position and make a good living by staying with the company and getting raises. We have regular stockers at my store making 13-17 dollars an hour. Many of these people have been with the company 6-8 years. All Wal-Marts offer bonuses based on store performance. Last year at my store it was around $1700 for all associates that averaged 35 hours a week or more. Hell even part time associates working 20 hours a week received something around $1400.

My point is that you shouldn't just drink all the anti-Wal-Mart Kool Aid you read out there. I know I understand the shortcomings of my company. I work in a very nice area, and Wal-Marts in Oklahoma and surrounding states tend to be nice, clean stores. I know there are Wal-Marts in depressed areas or areas that are new to Wal-Mart that are likely to be pretty terrible and I wouldn't fault people for not shopping there. However, one cannot judge the entire company on one bad experience. There is much good that Wal-Mart brings. If they weren't so damn good at what they do then why are we so popular? Why do so many people choose to work there if all the company does is crap on their workers? There are hundreds of places to work and shop people.

Sorry to get a little off topic. As for the iPhone coming to Wal-Mart it is a fantastic decision by Apple. They will reach a market that is far, far greater than they can through AT&T, Best Buy and Apple stores combined. This will help them sell a lot more phones and make more money, which is kind of the point of having a business don't you think? Products like Macbooks and iMacs probably should not be sold in Wal-Mart stores. Our business model doesn't lend itself to a more involved and hands on customer experience. However, the iPhone is a phone at heart and Wal-Mart already has in store cell phone kiosks built into the electronics department of most stores. Also, through our associate discount we would also receive 10% off of the price of the phone itself. Personally I'm excited as when the next revision of the iPhone is released (iPhone 2G 16GB owner) I can buy it from Wal-Mart and save a little bit of cash. :D

I'm all for Wal-Mart selling the iPhone.

On Tuesday, we went out to get a second iPhone. It was either BestBuy, AT&T or the Apple store. If it had been available at Wal-Mart which is closer, we would have gladly went there to save some drive time. We went to the Apple store and got A+ service as expected and we were treated with all kinds of respect. I will always recommend the Apple store over anywhere else.

As for people thinking that this will allow anyone to own an iPhone now, why? Anyone who had the money could still go to BestBuy or the Apple store. It's just giving people even more locations to pick one up.

If you thought the iPhone was a status symbol, think again. Remember the first iPhone on that Friday in June? Long lines at every Apple store? All the Apple stores selling out their stock minutes after a new truckload arrived?
Remember last July for iPhone 3G? Long lines? Apple stores selling out of stock in minutes again? Mom's were buying their 13 year old kids iPhones that day, there was a family in front of me buying them.

Oh and as for Wal-Mart, some of the richest people in the world shop there. Nothing wrong with shopping at Wal-Mart. I hope Apple has the best luck in the world and sells millions more iPhones this coming year.

Walmart flyer in the mail confirms iPhone

the mail yesterday, was a Walmart flyer and on the cover was an as for both the 8 and 16 GB phone. Prices are $197 and $297 respectively.

According to the flyer, they are available on December 28.

I would post the flyer but I'm having scanner issues.

Wal-Mart iPhone :(

Okay So i work in the Best Buy Mobile Department within Best Buy and My co-workers and I see many people that have to give a deposit that are wanting the iphone. Now that wal-mart is going to be selling the iphone there will many more people that will try to get it but will have to pay a deposit. Demographically people that shop at wal-mart usually dont go there to spend tons of there money and especially on a phone. Usually they go for the free ones!

Does anyone else feel the same?:D

I'm sure there are just as many people buying the iPhone at the Apple store who have to pay a deposit to get the iPhone. Noone is perfect and shopping at Walmart doesn't make you different than someone who shops at Apple. I shop at both places.

I bought some Avery mailing lables at Walmart for $4.95 when every place else wanted over $10. Why should I go to Office Max to pay double just because it's not Walmart?

I vote that the word "elitist" be banned, along with "fascist", "fanboy" and "Vista".

As for Wal-Mart, my only opinion is this: you can have Wal-Mart or you can have diversity -- you can not have both. You decide what kind of world you want.

That's my point - though it may lead to Apple selling cheaper, handsets there.

The only thing keeping me from getting a real iPhone is AT&T rates are so outrageous...

I have more confirmation with this Wal-Mart ad:

I posted it, don't worry.

They already sell iPods at WM

I also agree. It is not that big a deal. Walmart has been selling Ipods for a long time.

Now I would be surprised if they started selling Macbooks, but I don't think that would be a bad idea either.

Should Help with the Reach

This announcement should really help Apple with their reach into the more rural areas, meaning more customers and higher stock price.

Wal-Mart iPhone returns

Those who bought their iPhones at Wal-Mart will probably end up returning them to Wal-Mart when they stop working. What's the support plan going to be like? How will Wal-Mart sell the phones if they require in-store activation? Will they get the same level of service they would get if they purchased it from an Apple store (really the best way, IMHO)?

Possibly, but I went into a rural area with my Iphone recently and the service was not pretty. :(

It's official. The iPhone will be the RAZR of 2009.

Very well said. Selling the iPhone at Walmart definately cheapens the brand in my opinion. Plus once Steve Job's starts drinking the Walmart cool aid, he'll loose control. Walmart doesn't let their vendors set the terms, they control the vendor.

Yeah it definitely cheapens the brand in the same way its cheapened the ipod line.

The rural areas with no 3G? If I lived in such a rural area, I would seriously consider buying a 1st gen iPhone with no contract instead of the $200/$300 iPhones on contract whose only difference will be plastic case and GPS.

i just joined now to respond to this thing about walmart because i actually work in a connection center in the eau claire walmart here in wisconsin... and i was going to write this big response... but i thought.. why.. im happy where im at... and i dont need to battle people who think walmart is the end of the world.. so.. if you hate walmart that bad.. good for you... continue buying the same crap i buy at walmart... for way less than you pay for it... ive already sold a few iphones... people are excited that we do carry it.
