Oh, come on. You know the drill.
Steve: Lots of manufacturers have had video chat for a long time. But they never implemented it the right way. So I asked our team of engineers to make the best, easiest to use, smoothest to watch, mobile video chat ever. And they did. So I am here to announce mobile video chat DONE RIGHT... iChat iPhone. You are going to love it and our competitors are going to wonder how we did it.
I can't remember the last phone I had that didn't have a front facing camera and have always thought it completely pointless. I figured Apple knew it was a waste of space and that's why they've never implemented it. No amount of marketing will convince me to use video chat I'm afraid.

To everyone who seems to think that Video Chat is coming to 3G:
STOP F***ING KIDDING YOURSELVES. ATT is NEVER EVER going to allow that. It'll be available as a 3G feature in other countries, but not this one.
oh, and the iPhone won't come to other platforms until November.
Unless of course Sprint and or Verizon gets the iPhone and they allow video chat.
5 reasons why 'video chat' on the iPhone will be big...
1. Read this HowStuffWorks article, How Video Conferencing Cell Phones Work. The technology is not the limiting factor.
2. This is not about video chatting. It's about video communication. Imagine sharing a live experience with friends/family/s.o. wherever you are... an outdoor concert, a sunset, watching your kid's/niece's game (I would LOVE to see my niece at bat rather than getting texts that she hit a grand slam...)
3. Having a phone with video chat while no one else has the same phone is like wanting to play tennis and you're the only one with a racket. There are enough people with iPhones to resolve this. See article above.
4. If Flip cams became wildly popular, and web cams became wildly popular, why wouldn't combining the two be at least half as popular? It's instant ease of use combined with anywhere connectivity.
5. The main reason video chat isn't used much with computers is because who wants to see the back of your living room while in your pajamas? When you're outside, at least you're dressed up and presentable, and with something else to share besides just your face.
Just make a video chat standard if you want video chat to take off.
My main worry is if they don't allow 3rd party developers to make use of the camera. I would like Skype to work across all these devices. Like even with the Evo...i've never heard of Qik...but EVERYONE has heard of Skype.
This thing is going to' create amazing app in the bear future

The bear future sounds like a frightening place.

I have no need for video chat, but i'm sure Apple will convince me I want it.
We've had video conferencing on phones here since at least 2004 (that's when I got my first video conferencing phone). People use it here just fine.
So what if US networks can't handle it? Everyone else can. And by the sound of the advert we're going to get it anyways. Huzzah!
I am sorry but every text is recorded and saved. Once it goes digital and through servers, it's there for good. What makes you think teens would be more likely to use it? They hardly call anymore even, all they do is text. It's silent, there's no record, it can be done in class, etc.. Video chatting really doesn't offer teens any advantage.
I Like the poll on the front page, where even on an obsessed Apple addict website, greater than 50% can't legitimately say that they even care about Video Chat on the phone.
All I've heard for 3 frigging years is WAAAAAAA what about video chat? WAAAAAA...
Yet, in reality, no one has ever really cared, and no one will ever really use it, except in extreme rarities. I might use it if I can send live feed over the back camera, to show somebody something interesting that I come across in the field. Currently I use the iPhone's brilliant MMS and video record / trimming features to send short clips when I'm out in the field, but If I could start a live video conference and switch the feed to the back mounted video camera....we may have something useful there, for about 10 seconds a day....
Beyond that, staggeringly pointless feature.
I'm excited about the next iPhone's high resolution screen and undoubted ability to record and share 720p video.
