If I got an iPhone DOA, and they didn't exchange it RIGHT THERE, RIGHT THEN, I would be raising HELL. I can't IMAGINE the language and tone I'd be using.

God, just thinking of that BS, and how it'll probably happen to someone, just PISSES ME OFF!

/End rant, and CAPS LOCK

And you'll probably get a new one before the first F-word. Trust me. Now it's not a time for BS.

They mention that you can use the ATT SIM card in another ATT phone, but what about an unlocked phone from another provider? I have an unlocked T-mobile SDA, which I would keep post-iPhone purchase if I could still use it on occasion, for instance, when traveling. Any thoughts?

um the iphone is unlockable, however, you will have to wait on verbage from Att on how to unlock it. If you have t-mobile.. sucks for you, leave your contract or stop complaining.. geesh :apple:

I've never heard of or experienced a SIM card that doesn't work in an unlocked phone. I would imagine the SIM in the iPhone is just another AT&T SIM card, and that it would work in any unlocked phone just like AT&T SIM cards do now.

The policy will probably change in the future, but it pretty much is required if the crowds that Apple is expecting really materialize.

I'd assume all rules apply for traditional cingular/new att SIM cards and unlocked GSM phones. There shouldn't be anything special about these SIM cards.

Excuse me, I wasn't complaining, simply asking a question. I'm perfectly willing to leave T-mobile to get the iPhone, and, in fact, am leaning towards doing so. My current phone is not locked, as I understand it. Also, you seem to misunderstand the question, so your answer wasn't helpful.

Leaving my personal situation aside, does the policy imply that you can use the SIM card from the iPhone in any unlocked phone, or only another ATT phone? That is my question.

AppleCare

One thing nobody has mentioned (I think) is purchasing AppleCare for the iPhone. Besides extending your (I presume standard apple one year warrantee and month or so of phone support for software), perhaps they could include the loaner service as part of the deal without the additional fee? Would make sense. I would think Apple would want people to consider this phone an indespensible part of their life and all.

---Small FEE? If an iphone needs service..they should supply a loaner for free. That's ridiculous...

Does the bluetooth support A2DP & AVRCP? What about OBEX? If not then it's usefulness is greatly diminished.
I'm wondering the same. Is there any way to get files on the iPhone other than over the internet. They seem to be suggesting BT is just for headsets (reminds me of the old crippled Verizon phones), and the thing doesn't mount in disk mode so you can't put files on it that way.

no you cant take it to any other fone not att

So I can't use MY Sim that is in MY ATT RAZR with a ton of numbers already in???

no, you have to port them to microsoft outlook... thats what i did

i apologize for making those remarks towards you, and it only works with Att fones, this is what the att rep i talked to said. glad to hear you are thinking about buying iphone :apple:

OK, thanks for the info. Apology accepted, sorry if I was a little thin-skinned.

Yes, the iPhone is going to be hard to resist, much like the first iPod I saw--I got many, many hours of enjoyment out of it, and I expect the same from iPhone.

Is this a true statement:

No disk mode means no loading files of any kind to the phone?

Does this mean all pictures/etc. have to be actually taken with the iphone to be able to show 'em off? I'm not happy about that.

Agreed. I suspect that the reason a non-ATT SIM card won't work is because the iPhone is locked. The SIM card that comes with the iPhone should work in any other ATT phone, and also in any other phone that is unlocked.

By contrast, if the iPhone can be unlocked at some point, then any other SIM card should work there. I'll be waiting and hoping for unlock codes, and also for someone to figure out how to put modem scripts on the iPhone so that I can access data networks from my MacBook Pro.

And if someone can figure out how to unlock the phone, I don't think Apple or ATT can punish you for that -- in the US it is legal to take steps to unlock your phone after you've purchased it (it's an exemption to the Digital Milleneum Copyright Act).

interesting

That is interesting. I have a samsung phone (that has UMTS) that has MMS and IM, but I've never used it, because that is not included in the "unlimited internet" plan ($20, same as iPhone plan). It actually costs another $20 for those services. So if I switched to the iphone, and for some reason needed to tether or IM or MMS, like you said, I'd have my previous phone, and presumably the functionality would now work. Sounds like a ridiculous workaround for people who are very upset about lack of MMS in the iphone, but a decent workaround for those of us who have never even used it before. Huh.

SIM Portability is quite good news for me. I use a SonyEricsson right now and occasionally tether to it for data. The fact that I couldn't do this at all with the iPhone was kind of a bummer.

Now, (although slightly inconvenient), I will just carry my sony ericsson around in my laptop bag if I ever did need to tether and move the SIM from the iPhone to the SE.

No, I think it means your pictures will sync with your computer just like an iPod.

No, it just means that you can't use the iPhone as an external hard drive to store data files (like you currently can with iPods).

The iPhone does promote World Peace :D

I agree, I haven't seen much (or missed it altogether). The two things I've been waiting to hear about are AT&T SIM interop, which this post finally confirmed.

And the second was the availability of AppleCare... are there details anywhere that might confirm how LONG the warranty is extended or for what price it will be offered?

Thanks.

To be fair its pretty ridiculous that IM isn't part of the iPhone from launch. My 3 year old SE T637 has an IM app built in.

Really? I never realized that. What else can my phone do (I'm serious - I really never noticed)?

Reading the thread to this point - there seems to be some confusion. Other company SIM card cannot be used in the iPhone. The iPhone SIM card can be used in an unlocked phone from any company.

Hope that clears up the confusion.:)

The DOA policy is complete garbage.

I found a way to deal with a poor DOA policy once. I told the manage that I would wait until he changed the policy I walked around the store and talked with some other customers, told them what just happened. How they sold me a DOA device then refused to take it back, that the policy was "talk to whoever made it, we just sell them". The manager gave me a new one right quick.

It's bad enough it doesn't support DUN, but that could be worked around by keeping a spare unlocked GSM phone that does for when/if you need to tether a laptop (assuming the data plan doesn't block that operation somehow). But not having OBEX is a deal-breaker for me just on the principle of the thing. I didn't even think about A2DP, but obviously a freaking iPod-in-a-phone should have it. Apparently not, though.

Damn, Apple, you've crippled Bluetooth worse than my crappy Verizon phone from work. WTF?!

edited to add: You know what else really sucks? I have a bad feeling that Apple is going to be spending a LOT less effort getting other maunfacturers' cellphones working with iSync now.

The iPhone data plan terms of service specifically do not allow you to use it for a laptop modem.
