I am wondering if Apple will not start putting updates out sooner then every 12 months?

Why would they, which company does that for their phones, or I guess Apple should rush a new phone out anything a new iphone killer is announced.

I love my iPhone but *hate* AT&T. If this exclusivity BS continues beyond the next year and a half, I'll be looking for a comparable smartphone when I switch back to VZW, this looks like the first viable competitor...

Survey says: everybody hates AT&T. The only thing keeping their wireless business alive is the iPhone exclusive contract.

The day Apple opens iPhone beyond it, expect AT&T stock to plummet in anticipation of their impending bankruptcy. (Or just maybe T-Mobile will buy them.)

I can't see what sales of the pre have to do with this phone. Please educate me where the pre fits in with Motorola, Android or the Droid handset?

All I can see is ape like chest thumping of "pre was iPwn killer and it suxxorz" . :apple:

This phone is NOT the pre.

So bloody what, sue me for mentioning the Pre!

New phones come out every day. In this industry a lot can change in 12 months, just look what the iPhone...

Yeah I'm sure every AT&T customer uses an iphone or every iphone customer on AT&T hates them!

I doubt people are going to start leaning to one side over 1.2 oz. :D

It sounds minor, but this thing is going to feel heavy. The iPhone feels rather hefty. This will feel like a rock.

6 oz is a brick-weight for a phone these days. Anyone who holds an iPhone in one hand and Droid in the other is going to be stunned by how much heavier the Droid will feel.

But companies don't release new updates to phones every six months do they, they release them yearly.

Since it wasn't linked directly, this is the aforementioned BGR hands-on impression which the article directly quotes. Two things that stood out from those impressions which the article neglected to quote (emphasis mine):

Have we mentioned this phone flies? It’s the Android device to beat, and easily the most impressive. From what we’ve been told, Google had a direct hand in the Motorola Droid. Something to the point of almost dictating every move Motorola made when designing and making the phone. Interesting, huh?

No one wants to listen, but it makes the CLIQ looks like a child’s toy (partly because it is, and partly because the Droid, even in its non-final form, is the most impressive phone we’ve used since the iPhone. It’s positively amazing).

I'm looking forward to their preview today. I'm really happy to see Android receiving the hardware it deserves.

Just wait until somebody figures out how to run a hacked version of the iPhone OS 3.1 on the Droid..

I'd prefer real keys...but this layout does not appeal to me. IMO, the Pre has a far better keyboard setup than this.

Real keys, moving parts, possible point of failure. The fewer moving parts on a phone, the better, the slide is even worse.

Yeah I'm sure every AT&T customer uses an iphone or every iphone customer on AT&T hates them!

Didn't say that. Just that the iPhone is what is keeping AT&T afloat. And it is what is bringing in new customers for them. When they lose the exclusive contract, they will have no real competitive benefit.

Yes, they have non-iPhone users, but that is certainly not a growth segment for them. And I suppose they have satisfied iPhone customers, but they are certainly in the minority.

By comparison, I hear a LOT of people say that they would love to buy an iPhone but simply refuse to use AT&T. For me, the proposition was (just minutely, possibly) worth it, but I will dump AT&T the minute I can.

OS and design makes the big difference, not specs. While apps/software eventually will catch up I don't see how any company can catch up with Apple proven ability to deliver the user experience.

Look, it took an astonishing 20+ year for Microsoft to create the first OS on par, or almost on par, with the Mac one. And while the design of iPhone appear to be made for the hand that hold it and the one that interact with it, the design of the other smart phones, including this one, appear to be made merely for the mind of the person using it.

This is definitely the device to beat in the "world's ugliest phone" contest. There is a certain minimum level of aesthetic that I require a phone to have if I am going to consider it. This does not meet that standard.

Some do, RIM has 3 or so new Blackberries this year?

But they are not the same models. Take a look at the blackberry storm for instance, they released it in like October of last year and are coming to release a new one around this time. The same thing Apple does with their summer updates.

This is good!

We have no problem with ATT where I work, where we live we get 1 to 2 bars but then Verizon is the same here. I love my IPhone too but this will put pressure on Apple to stop holding back on things they put on the phone. Don't underestimate Android it's maturing. Those that tout all the apps in the app store, take out the flashlights and fart apps and the tip calculators and all the other crappy apps and we really have maybe half the amount of really good apps. kevin

I know plenty of people who feel the same way, including myself. I think the iPhone is fantastic, but nothing is so great that I would subject myself to 2 years with AT&T. Nothing. So I just bought an iPod Touch instead. All of the great apps and OS, none of the horrible service.

For those of us who do not want to switch to AT&T and pay between $80 and $100 a month for the crappiest service in the country for an iPhone this is good enough. I love the iPhone, had one when living abroad, and went through withdrawal symptoms when I had to give it up upon my return...but the iPhone is simply not worth it if it means being with AT&T and having to pay that outrageous amount when you will not be getting your money's worth because the service sucks so bad.

Even if Verizon charges the same you get your money's worth by them delivering on the service you are purchasing from them reliably. If this phone can do 90% of what the iPhone does (and frankly 100K apps, of which 95K are complete crap is not a selling point for me...it's pure marketting.) even if it's not quite as pretty, combined with the Verizon network, then I can be happy. I got an iPod touch anyway for those times when I still crave my old iPhone.

Until the iPhone comes to VZW I think this phone will be great for those of us not willing to hand out $100 a month to a company that cripples the best phone in the world simply by virtue of being such a ****** carrier with ****** service.

Half the amount is better than what Android has and I guess all the apps on Android are good?

What do you want from your "phone"?

Isn't that the question?

iPhone, best phone? No. Best "texting device"? No.

But I like my iPhone because it is a very useful device . . . plus secondarily, I can make calls and send texts. I want my iPhone because of iCal, Instapaper, Pandora, sports apps, the NYTimes app, etc.

But I know plenty of people who have decided on different phones because texting is the most important feature, or call reception is the most important feature.

(AT&T's 3G coverage sucks, but guess what, I don't care. I have a first gen iPhone and rely on Wi-Fi so I'm happy despite AT&T's incompetence. Besides, the more time that goes by the less minutes I use on my phone. Soon actually using my phone to make a conventional cell call will be a very rare thing.)

I think this phone has potential, but it's not an iPhone because it doesn't have OSX, thousands of apps, etc. But that won't stop consumers who are interested in texting first, other features second.

Didn't say that.
Not to be pedantic, but you did say that.

Survey says: everybody hates AT&T.

Emphasis mine. It's a statement that is not only hyperbole, but is demonstrably false. The fact that AT&T has been in business as long as they have been is indicative of a successful company that has a generous supply of happy customers. Its never going to be 100% of course, but the very fact it remains in business and was doing quite well before Apple entered it means that a lot are very happy.
