I'd just like to point out that although this is an article about the iPad being thinner, if the iPad remains the same size but the components require less space, then it's reasonable to assume the extra space has been used towards the battery.

This isn't necessarily a piece about a reduction in ipad size as some sort of race between companies, but could be viewed as a piece about battery life improvements or a bigger battery to cover an increased processor speed.

I loved my original ipad, but Since switching to the ipad mini, I could never go back to the regular size. No matter how thin they make it. For me, the mini(even tho its not Retina) is the perfect size.

But they're both great. ;-)

Today i was using a ipad 2, really miss the big screen :) might upgrade to a ipad 4 when the new one drops.

In fact, can I have a thicker iMac with a blu-ray drive in it please?

No? Ok I will build a hackintosh.

Yeah, and can I have an even thicker iMac so I can play my old VHS tapes in it?

No? Ok I will buy a VCR at the thrift store.

:)

This rocks and I hope it's true. I don't care much about thickness but it'd be nice to have a retina iPad with is lighter than iPad 3 and 4. If it uses less power too so that they can downsize the battery, it means the iPad may be even lighter in addition to taking less time to recharge.

This crap is already thin enough to cut a bumper in half.

There is no need to make it any thinner.

Sure, but the iMac had better cost $500 extra and have the drive as an option to bear the cost completely on those couple of people who want it. I don't want to pay for crap that I don't need.

Or you just get an external drive if you need it.

I'm sick of those. Apple is supposed to use CEO apology letters (and letters in general) sparingly.

Agree this race to be super duper extra thin is pointless when all these sacrifices must be made. Same goes with the iphone. Worry about the other things like battery over being paper thin

Battery, fine. Everyone needs the battery. I'd rather have a thick iPhone with a big battery than a thin one that lasts half as long. Blu Ray drive, no way. It just costs extra and probably generates extra heat.

Wow. Talk about stating the obvious! Anyone with a half a brain could have predicted this, and Macrumors acts like it is some kind of revolutionary piece of news. Wow!

Decrease in the bezel size would help my typing to be more accurate.

Lately I keep hitting 'n' with my thumb instead of space :)

Eh. I feel like "thinner and lighter" are the only things we get to look forward to anymore. And I don't look forward to them being thinner or lighter. They're just fine in both aspects if you ask me...

I like science fiction. until it's as thin and light as a piece of paper, there's still room to improve. the stuff in movies doesn't just appear -- it's iterative design cycles of slightly-better that eventually gets us there.

see the past twenty years of cell phones.

"More efficient battery technology may lead to a thinner device with longer battery life...."

Can I make the front page news now seeing as though I too am capable of pulling obvious statements out of the air... That don't have any other merit than being plausible but not based on any real evidence.

iPad mini owners may disagree. Typing accuracy on the mini is much less than the iPad and it is especially prone to missing letters (key presses)....

This could be down to Apple's software implementation to avoid unnecessary / accidental touch.

Ah, you forgot about different color iPads. :D

I don't understand how people get all hot over the mini. For a little more money you have a top quality screen. For me I wish Apple would manufacture a bigger iPad the same size as a 13" MacBook.

It's a trade-off between screen quality and portability of the device. Some people are willing to make it, others aren't, depends o their needs. I am inclined to do so myself, even.

The 9.7" iPad is definitely way too heavy.

When it falls onto your face when reading in bed it hurts.... iPad 5 needs to be much lighter than the iPad 2.

I think they should make it heavier, so it kills people dumb enough to have it fall on their face. :D

Give me that, with a half decent cpu/gpu combo, and I'll be out of the upgrade game for 3 years.
