Thinner & lighter, that's interesting... Have they done that before?
This just in:
The next generation of iOS products will be similar to, but better than, the current generation.
You heard it here first, folks!
Why do you even visit an Apple rumors site then? Serious question.
Gil Ameilo has started a charity for socially dysfuctional Wombats.
The adaptor for the next Lightning Bolt will be different.
Michael Spindler goes to work for Detroit Diesel.
Angry Birds decimated by virulent strain of Irish Flu.
Apple is suing and being sued by everybody.
Foxconn suicide nets are made of Velcro.
Tomorrow will be after today only lighter and thinner.
The next Mac Pro will follow the current Mac Pro.
A herd of Wall St. cheerleader Apple analysts commited suicide.
Agree this race to be super duper extra thin is pointless when all these sacrifices must be made. Same goes with the iphone. Worry about the other things like battery over being paper thinQUOTE]
Normally I would agree with things like this but Apple is fairly sneaky. They sometime will lead with a feature that seems pointless on one iteration to "train" you how to use it so they can later add another part so you SLOWLY transition into using the device. They've been doing this for a while with a number of devices and software, including input devices. (Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse, as examples).
I'm not saying this is necessarily the case but think about this.. Apple currently owns a majority of the market share (and certainly most of the wallet share). So while competitors are trying to play catch up Apple is making small changes and making the hardware almost as small (in just about every dimension) as possible. Once they get this to a point where it can't get any smaller guess what they can focus on... User improvements. All while competitors are then trying to catch up on the physical format. And I think everyone can agree that no one can take on Apple head-to-head with User Experience on mobile devices.
I'll be buying iPad 5 almost certainly on day 1. I can easily justify it as I've been using my iPad 2 every day since it was released 2 years ago. Would love for it to be smaller and lighter + excited to finally get Retina!

I understand what you are saying but they wouldn't need to make these minor adjustments if they focused more on the software side of things, although you are right with apple being able to make small adjustments while the competition tries to catch up

>>The new iPad, "Magically paper thin"

This site should publish a coffee table book annually, containing the year's most humorous posts. There have been quite a few notable ones recently.
Instead of making it even thinner, why not add some extra battery volume? My only real complaint about the iPad 4 is the battery dies very fast when playing games.
And while we're talking about the iPad, how about realizing it's now 2013 and they can stop charging 2008 prices for flash memory upgrades? When I can buy a 256 gig high-end SSD for under $200, there is no excuse for charging $200 to add 48 gig of flash to this thing.
This crap is already thin enough to cut a bumper in half.
There is no need to make it any thinner.
In fact, can I have a thicker iMac with a blu-ray drive in it please?
No? Ok I will build a hackintosh.
Yeah, and can I have an even thicker iMac so I can play my old VHS tapes in it?
No? Ok I will buy a VCR at the thrift store.

I like science fiction. until it's as thin and light as a piece of paper, there's still room to improve. the stuff in movies doesn't just appear -- it's iterative design cycles of slightly-better that eventually gets us there.
see the past twenty years of cell phones.
Let me guess.

Improvements to the iPad's LED backlighting will allow Apple to create a thinner iPad 5, NPD DisplaySearch's Paul Semenza told
2. Yeah, Apple has always charged so much more for this stuff, but it might just be built into how they offset other parts of the device. On the surface it may seem like pure profit, but in reality, it could be pure profit to offset lesser pure profit on screens lets say!![]()
