Yes, I did but I was thinking that you usually don't see them offer a feature in another country. I usually see them streamlining their product line across different countries. But, I could be wrong here.

I can think of one, wasn't it about 6 months before iPhone MMS was supported on AT&T after it was released?

Front-facing camera?

Woo-hoo, taking Myspacey self-portraits will never have been easier!

But I don't want to upgrade from my 3G. :(

Wouldn't double the resolution make text on web pages twice as small? Currently, web pages are usable natively without zooming in.

Can someone explain the practical benefits?

It wouldn't necessarily make it twice as small. They could have some resolution independence built into the new OS.

But that would be over 300 pixels per inch. That just seems… unnecessary. 300dpi is as far as you would need to go, I would think. Maybe not.

But the benefits would be super-crisp video and still images and text rivaling ePaper, at that size. It would look as good as print.

If the UI were basically half the iPad, that wouldn't be too bad, though. Hm.

Guess you thought wrong?

NEAR MEANINGLESS

How many absent features for an Apple product -- like the iPhone or the iPod Touch -- later have stories posted on this site showing the software was available, but purposely disabled by Apple.

It's all nothing more than a tease by Apple. If it's not software, it's hardware like an iPod Touch with a gap where a $8 camera can be placed by Apple but hold back -- on purpose -- to dangle the carrot in front of the donkey's nose to buy a future gen. of it OR don't want to cannibalize an existing product.

Called it

The new iPhone coming out in a few months will not have a front facing camera. Mark my words.

good post!

i skipped the original iphone, bought a 3g, skipped the 3gs, and will definitely buy the iphone 4. luckily, i am hitting the sweet spots of this device's upgrade cycle. i hate seeing people spend money on lousy first revisions *cough*ipad*cough* and/or minor refreshes when they already own a recent gen model. it's such a waste of resources and only encourages companies to push out more crap for profit rather than conserve materials and make every product update really count.

on a slightly unrelated note: i just have to say that there is no F*ing way in hell that DISNEY, NIKE, and TARGET had nothing to do with Steve Jobs' advertising of their crap during that conference. "oh, we just like their products" my ass!

Except if people don't buy the 1st generation, there is no second generation.

All of these new features in os 4.0 will absolutely kill the competition IMHO. The only thing I can think of people have been griping about not in OS 4 is Flash. Which I don't think we will ever see. Steve clearly does not like it.

- A4-family CPU system-on-a-chip
- 960x640 double-resolution display
- second front facing camera
- 3rd party multitasking in iPhone 4
If those are the only new hardware spec for the next iPhone, then meh. If you have a 3G, then it's a great upgrade as you'll also be getting video recording, compass, multi-tasking, etc. But for 3GS users, meh. Front facing camera sounds cool, but do you know anybody that use them? I don't. All my friends that have Nokia phones with front facing camera only brag about it, but never use it.

Verizon? Lol, ain't happening. You won't get any data while on a call... and besides, Apple is pushing the whole 7.2Mb/s iPhone 3GS; I highly doubt that Apple would want slower theoretical speeds to advertise.

Try living where I live. Verizon's 3G looks blazing fast next to all my iPhone friends who couldn't find a bar of it if they walked into the middle of a parking lot. Doesn't really matter how fast the phone is if you can't use it's ability. Not to say it's an AT&T dead zone, but If my life was on the line and I needed 911 thank god i have verizon.

iChat is the one thing I've been waiting for - video not just text - hope this will be true.

It just occurred to me why they would have 960x640 resolution in iPhone OS 4 iPhone apps:

The next iPhone's screen may still be the present-day 480x320 — the apps/interface would just get shrunk to fit. But the larger graphics would only be used on the iPad. No more terrible-looking pixel-doubling. It's much better to shrink images than to blow them up.

Wow... you don't really know what you're talking about do you? If next iPhone has the A4 chip that will be a huge deal over the 3gs.... add in (if it's true) the higher res screen and the improvements with iPhone os4 next gen will be head and shoulders above 3gs as 3gs was over 3g. I don't care about a front facing camera but next gen iPhone will be a huge deal (for those that like iPhone)

I hope the next phone allows basic functions like deleting a call from the call log without having to delete the whole freakin list. Imagine having to delete all your emails just to delete on email.

I have an Iphone 3G and a Macbook Pro and do like Apple products but at times not having simple features on a phone gets pretty frustrating. Would also be nice of this time around they put some decent stereo speakers in the phone as well like the ones that come on the Nokia N95 8GB.

I have yet to see any compelling evidence of a front facing camera. To me the iChat evidence could just as well point to a non-camera chatting function.

I don´t necessarily see that iChat automatically implies a front facing camera.

The iPad has a resolution of 1024 x 768..

I ...

... do suspect Apple invested significant time studying the jailbreak community. Anything presented is already usable over there - at least my iPhone 3G is an almost OS 4 iPhone 3GS except, of course, for the mere speed.

That reads: in app ads, multitasking and many more useful tweaks.

It's about time!

For the past 2 weeks I've been watching a Korean show on Youtube and I see them using front facing phones and I'm like...why doesn't our iPhone have it already?!?! And those Youtube videos are from 7 months ago!!!:apple:

These would be awesome specs. They really need the higher screen resolution to compete with the Nexus One.

This may be the biggest upgrade to the iPhone since its release :)

Meh. Second disappointment in 24 hours.

When it has a second camera—the most useless thing in the world—then I'll skip it (and stop my iPhone blog) and have to live with my non-multitasking 3G for the rest of my days.

Better make the "first camera" of an even higher quality—there are reasons enough. For those who can't live without "mobile video conferencing" take a simple MIRROR in front of you but leave us alone with such a crap. Thanks.

I don't get the deal with front facing cameras. Why would I want to video chat on such a small screen with such a low quality camera?

But anyway, it doesn't matter what features the next iPhone has if its still AT&T only.

Also, why can't I buy an iPhone and just use it? I want to be able to buy an iPhone and use it with no plan. Just be able to use the device. If I want service then I can prepay service from a provider of my choice. Is that so hard to understand? It's 2010. I shouldn't be locked into 1 carrier that has the worst coverage in the country.
