AppleInsider has found a hidden .tiff file within GarageBand 2 labeled "asteroid.tiff". The file appears incomplete and is unable to be opened, but can be clearly seen in the package contents.

Additionally, MacRumors readers have found within iLife '05 Install DVD/Individual Packages/Packages/GarageBandApp20.pkg/Contents/Archive.pax.gz - Asteroid Max Volume, Asteroid Min Volume, Asteroid Slider, Select Asteroid Input and many, many others.

wow... they're doing a terrible job of keeping this one under wraps... what is it again?

Maybe they wanted to include it but had to pull out at the last minute due to production problems/issues?

I think I'm right in saying that asteroid is an audio interface, that you can plug loads of instruments/leads into. Its either a firewire or usb, cant remember which.

Pllllllllaaaaeeesssseeeeee bring out Asteroid, Apple!

I'm waiting with credit card in hand!

I added this to the front page, for clarity: Asteroid is expected to be an audio "breakout box" used to connect multiple audio instruments into one midi interface. Initial rumors began in November 2004, and leaks eventually led to Apple's legal charges against multiple online rumor sites for disseminating the information.

The rumored device is not just a MIDI interface, but has TRS 1/4" and XLR as well.

agreed... midi is kinda lame... i guess for the home user maybe...?

what does "lame" or "home user" have to do with it? maybe you don't have hardware synths and samplers, fx, and control surfaces that use midi to connect to sequencers. but lots of pro's with lots of real gear use midi as part of a complete real studio. i'm one of them.

i expect this to be a more prosumer level interface of some sorts, and i think it meant to say both audio and midi connections in a firewire based breakout box.

i think it had 2 nuetrik connectors.

neutrik is a brand, and they make many types of connectors. they are famous for their nl4's and nl8's used in pa applications, but i still anticipate this interface having 1/4 or xlr connections.

midi i/o is standard on most audio interfaces. in no way shape or form is midi 'lame'. for the 'home user'?.. explain to me how you plan on controlling your DAW sequencer, softsynths, and automation events without midi?..

Yay!

Anyone want to buy my slightly used MobilePRE usb?
Hope this comes to light and has some cool features, MobilePRE hits eBay the day this is realeased.

i always thought that those combined trs and xlr ins were simply called nuetriks.

well, either way, thats what they were in the mock up. xlr and trs ins. combined.

Well, if anyone managed to read the article, you would find out that the box has been put of indefinate hold due to poor design (aka, it's good for Dell!) so don't look for it at your Apple Store anytime soon.....

i say its going to be an audio and video input/output so they can start up iVideo with its release! Download movies and watch them on ur tv :D

See, that confused me. It says it is a MIDI interface. Yet when you read the info it has XLR and TRS 1/4". Which is it?

Not too excited about this, since I don't have any instruments to plug in. But I do appreciate the diligence of our macrumors base for finding these hidden asteroid files in the installers/packages. Good research makes for good rumors. :)

it would be a unique niche market for this, but perhaps it would be a nice addition to the mini and draw the musicians into the Mac experience more and then the word of mouth campaign.

I think you'll find that most musicians using computers for music generation/production are already using Macs. I've never been into a recording studio that uses PC's though I know that some do exist as I see them on the Digidesign ProTools forums.
However, this will be a welcome audio interface. Neutrik is indeed a brand name but the connecters will be xlr and 1/4" TRS (tip, ring, sleeve.)
